info_outline"You have cancer." Three words no one ever wants to hear from their physician. In this very special episode of Purpose Lounge, we hear from Randall Broad about his cancer journey, what he learned, and what he now teaches anyone who may be faced with the same life altering news.
Randy was diagnosed in 2008 with stage III non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) at a local yet renowned community hospital. The fact that he was diagnosed with this disease is heart wrenching in and of itself, but it was the manner in which the diagnosis was communicated to him that is even more shocking.
Not willing to accept their treatment protocol, lack of effective communication, and overall disregard, Randy set out to find prospective providers in the area.
Taking matters into his own hands and ‘shopping’ for the right provider proved fruitful. Based on a caring physician, Dr. Renato G. Martins, who took the time to educate Randy about his specific form of cancer and the recommended treatment, Randy brought his business to Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA).
Now a 10-year lung cancer survivor, Randy’s greatest mission is to advocate for fellow patients. The Kirkland father of two is actively involved in patient advocacy both locally and nationally: talking with patients one-on-one, partnering with physicians and speaking at events.
“I’ve noticed that patients, especially ones who are newly diagnosed, don’t know what questions they need answered,” he says. “I want to help break down the barrier on both sides of the stethoscope.”
Randy is also partnering with Gary H. Lyman, MD, MPH, of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, to improve the communication process between patients and physicians. During these “CSessions,” Randy interviewed Dr. Lyman on the subject; next, he plans to continue the discussions around the web with various audiences.
I hope that everyone will share this episode as it reminds us just how important it is to be our own advocate, to get the medical attention and information that we need in order to experience positive outcomes in remission and healing.
Oh, and one more thing, Randy is a published author! Check out his personal memoir, "It's an Extraordinary Life," a book he wrote for his children after being diagnosed with cancer. Available on Amazon!
