info_outlineHey there fellow book lovers! In this episode of Reading With Your Kids, we had the pleasure of chatting with two amazing authors who are using their books to make a real difference.
First up, we spoke with Dagmara Sitek, the author of the Courage Tale series. Dagmara shared the inspiring story behind these books, which follow the journeys of resilient foster children. We learned how the tragic case of a young boy in Poland motivated Dagmara to create these uplifting tales, aiming to raise awareness about the challenges faced by kids in the foster system.
Dagmara walked us through the latest book, "Cam Creates a Hero," which follows a sensitive foster child who dreams of building a robot to help other kids going through tough times. We loved hearing how Dagmara balances the serious themes with beautiful illustrations and plenty of adventure and fun. She's really created something special that can open up important conversations with young readers.
We also chatted with Mary Fashik, author of the "Adventurous Adeline" series. Mary, who is a disablities advocate and mentor, poured her heart into creating a protagonist that disabled and non-disabled kids can both see themselves in. Adeline loves going on exciting outings, and Mary hopes her stories will normalize disability representation in children's literature.
Both Dagmara and Mary shared their personal experiences growing up without these kinds of inclusive, empowering books. Now, they're passionate about getting their stories into the hands of kids everywhere - from local libraries to schools.
If you're looking to diversify your child's bookshelf and expose them to characters that reflect the beautiful diversity of our world, be sure to check out the Courage Tales and Adventurous Adeline series. These are the kinds of books that can truly make a difference!
