How do you stand against false teaching without becoming cruel—and show mercy without compromising the truth? Summary: The Letter of Jude calls Christians to contend for the faith while refusing both compromise and cruelty. Jude warns that false teaching often enters quietly, twisting grace, rejecting Christ’s authority, and producing spiritual fruit that eventually exposes the deception. Believers are called to strengthen their own faith while moving toward those who doubt or drift with truth, wisdom, and mercy. Ultimately, our confidence is not in how tightly we hold onto God, but in the...

Our text today is Woe to them! For they walked in the way of Cain and abandoned themselves for the sake of gain to Balaam’s error and perished in Korah’s rebellion. These are hidden reefs at your love feasts, as they feast with you without fear, shepherds feeding themselves; waterless clouds, swept along by winds; fruitless trees in late autumn, twice dead, uprooted; wild waves of the sea, casting up the foam of their own shame; wandering stars, for whom the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved forever. — Not every spiritual voice wants to help you. Some want to use...

info_outlineOur text today is 2 Peter 2:20-22:
For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first. For it would have been better for them never to have known the way of righteousness than after knowing it to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them. What the true proverb says has happened to them: “The dog returns to its own vomit, and the sow, after washing herself, returns to wallow in the mire.” — 2 Peter 2:20-22
Peter ends this chapter with a graphic warning.
He describes people who escaped the world’s corruption through the knowledge of Jesus Christ but became involved in it again. They learned the truth, experienced its power, and "appeared" to leave their former lives behind. But they returned to the very corruption they once escaped.
Peter declares their final state became worse than their first state.
Why?
Because exposure to truth does not always produce real surrender. A person can learn Christian lingo, experience Christian community, modify external behavior, and still inwardly refuse the lordship of Christ, while looking like they do.
Peter’s immediate focus in the text is false teachers. They knew the way, taught the way, and used the language of the way. But the way they taught was not the way they lived.
He compares these fraudulent followers to a dog returning to its vomit and a cleaned-up pig returning to the mire. The images are intentionally repulsive because sin is repulsive and so is the action.
But we all know old patterns have a way of calling us back.
I know there are sins I have confessed, habits I have left, and attitudes I have rejected that still try to persuade me they have something new to offer. But sin never becomes better with time. It only becomes more deceptive and more destructive.
When we return to the old life, it only comes with heavier chains.
But remember, Peter is not describing a believer who stumbles, grieves his sin, repents, and returns to Christ. His warning is aimed at those who repeatedly resist the truth and deliberately return to immorality as a resolved way of life. A stumble is not the same as surrendering to our old ways.
We should never treat any sin casually. What begins as one compromise can become a renewed entanglement. A reopened door can become a stronghold of sin.
So pay attention to any old patterns inviting you back. A secret conversation. A hidden website. A dishonest practice. A wild appetite. Or a bitterness you once surrendered.
Peter's point is this: knowing the way is not the same as living in it. Hearing truth is not the same as obeying it. Being cleaned up outwardly is not the same as being transformed inwardly.
So let Christ continue to transform your life from the inside out.
DO THIS:
Identify one former pattern that has been inviting you back. Close one practical door to it today, and tell a trusted believer: “This has been calling me back, and I need your help to keep walking forward.”
ASK THIS:
- What former pattern or temptation are you most vulnerable to returning to?
- How can you distinguish between struggling against sin and surrendering yourself back to it?
- What practical door needs to be closed before an old temptation becomes a renewed entanglement?
PRAY THIS:
Jesus, keep me from returning to what you rescued me from, and give me the courage to close every door that leads back into bondage. Amen
PLAY THIS:
Come Thou Fount
