A History of Rock n' Roll in Film and Rock n' Roll
According to a book I just snagged from the libarry, Ronnie Van Skynryd once opened for Black Sabbath and tried to kill his own guitarist while Sabbath guitarist ZAKK WYLDE looked on in horror. Yes you read that correctly. Also I found out today that Mojo Nixon died on a day not far from the day the drummer he portrayed in "Great Balls of Fire" also died. Sounds like a good reason to go back to the earliest episodes of this podcast and relive my "Great Balls of Fire" review with copious amounts of Nick Toshces history of Jerry Lee, eh? What ELSE you got going on, anyway? CHRIST! ...

Hiya Hiya Hiya! We're back with a new film commentary, just the same kinda thing that started this whole podcast, Me and my pal Dan Teisan reacting in real time to a rock n' roll film from the mid 1990s. I was originally clued into the existence of this movie on either reddit or facebook in an "Old newspaper ads for films" group(because my life is a non stop action sensation of sensational action and adventurous sexual encounterings with wild people I'm constantly encountering and adventuring all up and over). And I have to say I was shocked that I'd never heard of this film made with my dude...

Like Whoopie Goldberg in Sister Act 2 I'm back in the habit! Time for some SoCal thrash metal, hardcore CA punk, hardcore D.C. punk and Jeremy Saulnier's super violent thriller "Green Room". Come for the sadness of what it's like touring in a van and stay for Captain Picard's nazi goons murdering the JJ Abrams reboot version of Pavel Chekov. Sources for this episode include American Hardcore by Steven Blush, Our Band Could Be Your Life by Michael Azerrad, SLAYER 66 2/3: The Jeff and Dave Years by D.X. Ferris, and Going Underground | American Punk 1979-1989 | by George Hurchalla. ...

Today we finish up Ritchie's story with some more background on the filmmaker and the movie I've come to love even more and apparently get goddamn defensive about. Reviewing the legacy of the film via a look back with Valdez and Lou Diamond Phillips TV Tropes about "La Bamba!" My takeaways about the making of the film in 3 parts A look back at Luis Valdez's career and activism featuring a note about his cousin ("that vato?") Caesar Chavez and the work of Teatro Campesino A brief look at the historical significance of American Pauchocos with a detour into some James Ellroy because...

Checking in on the state of the Stones as they prep for a return to American crowds in '69. And an exploration of the relationship between SUN and CHESS records from 1950-1951, around the time of "Rocket 88", as well as why it's called "The first Rock n' Roll record" by some. It's really not, but the question of what actually is is kind...

I don't know how to warn you I might get a little wibbly-bibbly in the wobbles during this one. Verklempt, if you will. Similar to the way I was on the CROW episodes processing the loss of Brandon Lee all over again. Ritchie was clearly a marvel and a unique talent in ways I didn't understand until now. To be a guitar hero and a hit songwriter and a teen idol at the same time is a hurculean accomplishment for a 17-year-old kid from Pacoima, California in 1958. And I struggled a bit when jumping on the mic right after my research. This goes back to me being a little kid when I saw the film and...
info_outlineEnjoy me tripping over my own research on Dirty Harry at the beginning of this one, folks! Then you can also enjoy the following:
- Duff decides it's time to bring in Slash and Steven so they can tour the west coast
- Axl threatens to whip Michael Hutchence's onstage ass while GnR are backstage in 1988
- More TV tropes about "The Dead Pool" including me finding SLASH's whole page of personal tropes!!!
- Izzy bottoms out and gets sober after pissing into something that's not the toilet on a plane.
- Manager Alan Niven discusses the Vince Neil incident at the MTV Music Video awards in fall of 1989
- "Mick Wall at kErRaNg!" takes us through his account of the "Get In The Ring" saga and I actually side with him for once. Ok for twice, at least. I'm not a man who wants ta live in a world of absolutes, fer crissakes.
- My friends and I do a live table read of the inFAMOUS (meaning less than famous) 1986 Karen Burch interview from "Music Connection" magazine, followed by my narration of the fallout on both sides.
Thank you so much for caring about Rock n' roll. It's the best, and so are you.
