Show Title: “Latest In Medical Research - Explained”

Co-Hosts: Judy Gaman, Walter Gaman, Mark Anderson

Segment 1

Our world is ever changing. The developments in medical research is astounding. We decided to look at some of the latest research and break it down for our listeners. Some of this will surprise you. There was just so much, but these were our favorites.

  • Judy - This research is out of the NIH/National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. It has long been believed that the brain is exempt from “plumbing” or lymph drainage. New research shows that there is actually a lymph system that carries the waste out of the brain. This is significant, because it may give new clues to neurological disorders like MS and Parkinson’s. This also sheds some light on the brain/immune system connection. Ironically, an Italian medical scientist in 1816 reported seeing these vessels but was ignored and it was never talked about again for 2 centuries! https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2017/10/171003111111.htm

  • Gaman - Brigham and Women's Hospital. Anti-inflammatory therapy cuts risk of lung cancer. Patients who received the anti-inflammatory therapy drug canakinumab had a reduction in the incidence of lung cancer and lung cancer mortality. In this high-risk patients, cancer death was reduced by 1/2 in the group of people who received the highest dosage of the drug. Further details can be found in the publication The Lancet. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2017/08/170828105410.htm

  • Judy - New study on bilinguals - Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, and George Washington University discovered newborns can distinguish between different languages. The brains of bilinguals is different because when they hear one language, the brain is translating it into both languages at the same time. Therefore bilinguals use more brain power and have greater neuroplasticity. https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/319642.php
