20 minutes after quitting

Your heart rate and blood pressure drop. (Effect of smoking on arterial stiffness and pulse pressure amplification, Mahmud A, Feely J. 2003. Hypertension:41:183)

12 hours after quitting

The carbon monoxide level in your blood drops to normal. (US Surgeon General's Report, 1988)

2 weeks to 3 months after quitting

Your circulation improves, meaning your blood is pumped better and your lungs work better. (US Surgeon General's Report, 1990)

1 to 9 months after quitting

Coughing and shortness of breath decrease; Lung function improves increasing the ability to handle mucus, clean the lungs, and reduce the risk of infection. (US Surgeon General's Report, 1990)

1 year after quitting

The excess risk of coronary heart disease is half that of a smoker's. (US Surgeon General's Report, 2010)

5 years after quitting

If you are taking a PPI – Proton Pump Inhibitor, the medications used to treat ulcers and acid reflux, you need to hear this. Two new studies have emerged that show PPI class drugs can actually cause damage to the kidneys. These drugs were never intended to be used on a long term basis, but many people have been on them for years, causing irreversible damage to their kidneys.

 

A study out of Johns Hopkins University followed over 10K adults with normal kidney function from 1996 to 2011. They found that PPI users were between 20% and 50% more likely to develop CKD than non-PPI users, even after accounting for baseline differences. This discovery was replicated in a second study with over 240,000 patients who were followed from 1997 to 2014. This is significant!
