Women listen up!  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  It’s popular belief that exercise can help treat depression, but new research shows this may not help everyone.  According to the WHO, depression is on the rise and is the number one cause of disability worldwide. Much research has show that exercise may be just as effective at treating depression as antidepressants.  According to new research out of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, the benefits of exercise when treating depression may vary in men and women.  In the study, the link between depression and exercise only manifested in men, not women.  Meaning, women did not experience symptom relief from exercise.  But remember, this is only one study and exercise should always be your first line of defense.
