485 – 40 Days to the Ascension

Below are written all the Scriptures and some of my notes, making it easy for you to follow along with the lesson right from your devices.

After Jesus Christ's resurrection, he was on Earth for 40 days until the Ascension, when he was gathered up to be on God's right-hand side. During those 40 days, he instructed his Apostles and disciples on what they were to do next. In this podcast, we'll look at that in detail.

Matthew 28:16 “Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them.”

By Jesus's instructions to his Apostles and disciples.

John 20:24 & 25 “But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. ²⁵ The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.”

Thomas got a nickname, Doubting Thomas, but he wasn't the only one. Jesus's apostles and disciples also had difficulty believing he had risen from the dead.

John 20:26 – 29 “And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you. ²⁷ Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing. ²⁸ And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God. ²⁹ Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.”

Sometimes, someone who represents God is called God. Thomas respected Jesus Christ as the one who spoke for God; indeed, he was God's son.

John 20:30 & 31 “And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: ³¹ But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.”

Many events are not recorded in the Scriptures, but what is recorded is for us, and we can utilize it in our lives.

Matthew 28:17 – 20 “And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted. ¹⁸ And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. ¹⁹ Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: ²⁰ Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”

Jesus instructed them to make disciples out of other people, even the Gentiles, and that Jesus would always be present with them.

John 21:1 & 2 “After these things Jesus shewed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias; and on this wise shewed he himself. ² There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples.”

Tiberius is the same as the Sea of Galilee. At this occasion, only seven disciples, five of whom were apostles, were present.

John 21:3 – 17 “Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with thee. They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing. ⁴ But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus. ⁵ Then Jesus saith unto them, Children, have ye any meat? They answered him, No. ⁶ And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes. ⁷ Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter, It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his fisher's coat unto him, (for he was naked,) and did cast himself into the sea. ⁸ And the other disciples came in a little ship; (for they were not far from land, but as it were two hundred cubits,) dragging the net with fishes. ⁹ As soon then as they were come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon, and bread. ¹⁰ Jesus saith unto them, Bring of the fish which ye have now caught. ¹¹ Simon Peter went up, and drew the net to land full of great fishes, an hundred and fifty and three: and for all there were so many, yet was not the net broken. ¹² Jesus saith unto them, Come and dine. And none of the disciples durst ask him, Who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord. ¹³ Jesus then cometh, and taketh bread, and giveth them, and fish likewise. ¹⁴ This is now the third time that Jesus shewed himself to his disciples, after that he was risen from the dead. ¹⁵ So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs. ¹⁶ He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep. ¹⁷ He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.”

For someone to ask you something three times is an oriental custom of constraining. It's like time and time again, God is calling us. Here Jesus was calling Peter to a higher calling of service.

John 21:18 & 19 “Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdedst thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not. ¹⁹ This spake he, signifying by what death he should glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he saith unto him, Follow me.”

Here, Jesus is calling Peter to a more excellent call of service. This is also a lesson for us. Jesus is always with us, and he's calling us to do something, and we can do it because we have Jesus Christ helping us.

John 21:20 – 25 “Then Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following; which also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee? ²¹ Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do? ²² Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me. ²³ Then went this saying abroad among the brethren, that that disciple should not die: yet Jesus said not unto him, He shall not die; but, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? ²⁴ This is the disciple which testifieth of these things, and wrote these things: and we know that his testimony is true. ²⁵ And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.”

We never need to be concerned about what God has called someone else to do. We must be concerned with what God has called us to do individually. We're all members, in particular, of the body of Christ, and we are all called of God to do something.

1 Corinthians 1:4 – 8 “I thank my God always on your behalf, for the grace of God which is given you by Jesus Christ; ⁵ That in every thing ye are enriched by him, in all utterance, and in all knowledge; ⁶ Even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you: ⁷ So that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ: ⁸ Who shall also confirm you unto the end, that ye may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

What is recorded here is in chronological order of Jesus Christ's appearance. Not all are found in the Gospels. One, Peter went off thinking by himself after the second time to the tomb. After Jesus appeared to two disciples on the road to Emmaus, they told the rest of the Apostles that Peter had seen Jesus. Another time, the apostles were together without Thomas being there, and then another time in Galilee, Thomas was present, and Judas was too. Five hundred at one time, not recorded in the Gospels, nor is Jesus going to James recorded. Maybe the 500 were on the day of Ascension, and Judas was still there.

Acts 1:1 – 5 “The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, ² until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen: ^{3 T}o whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God: ^{4 A}nd, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. ^{5 F}or John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence."

When it says the apostles he chose, he chose 12, and Judas was one of them, so Judas was there at this time.

All the witnesses who saw Jesus Christ after he was resurrected from the dead are impressive. All these people who saw Jesus Christ after he had been risen from the dead were over 500 people. If you were in a court of law and had 500 people as witnesses to an event, that would be more than enough to know what happened. People have said at times that this is a hoax. This cannot be a hoax, given that many witnesses saw Him after he died. And now he is still with us always to help us. What we're going to get into now are Jesus Christ's final instructions.

Luke 24:45 – 49 “ Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, ⁴⁶ And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: ⁴⁷ And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. ⁴⁸ And ye are witnesses of these things. ⁴⁹ And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.”

Acts 1:6 – 8 “When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? ⁷ And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. ⁸ But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”

Mark 16:15 – 20 “ And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. ¹⁶ He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. ¹⁷ And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; ¹⁸ They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. ¹⁹ So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God. ²⁰ And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.”

Luke 10:19 “Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.”

Acts 1:9 – 11 “And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. ¹⁰ And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; ¹¹ Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.”
