No matter how good a plot, without a strong protagonist to hold it together it becomes flat and lifeless. I find Forever and a Death by Donald Westlake fascinating, but because it was originally a Bond script and turned into a novel without Bond, the protagonist of the piece is a little flat and lifeless.
