More Episodes

In 2011, Ryan had a mountain bike accident in Girona, Spain while working with Trek Tavel. He injured his spine at the C4 vertebrae. When he returned to the United States after doing his acute rehab in Barcelona, Spain, he was med-flighted back to the USA where he spent invaluable time in the Inpatient Rehab at Spaulding in Boston.

He attended Empower Spinal Cord Injury (Empower SCI) in 2012 and 2013 where he learned how to be more independent and to get out of his comfort zone. In 2015 he co-founded an annual fundraiser called Knobby Tire Ride and Roll to benefit Empower SCI which brings his love of mountain biking back to the disabled community while raising nearly 40,000USD to date for the organization.

Because of Ryan's exposure to the amazing peer mentors while at Spaulding and Empower SCI, he became a mentor with the Great Boston Chapter of the United Spinal Association (GBC) in 2014. Three years later he became a board member and has put his experience in logistics, event planning, and management to good use in various chapter committees. He also took on the role of Digital Media Coordinator in 2018.
