This week, I’m honored to be joined by marathon legend Kathrine Switzer, the first woman to officially complete the Boston Marathon in 1967. During a time when myths about women and their biology were rampant, her formal entry into the marathon was proof that women were more than capable of keeping up and smashing barriers in sports. Episode Overview: Sometimes, even when you’ve reached your goal, it may not be what you were expecting. This is the case for a lot of women across male-dominated fields. They find themselves in situations where they have a seat at the table-- but that’s all it is. A seat. It takes a lot to firmly plant your spot as a woman in an industry, and to be respected as such. My guest today is Dr. Saralyn Mark, a world known leader in women’s health, and was the first Senior Medical Advisor to the Office on Women’s Health within the Department of Health and Human Services and to the National...

Episode Overview: We all carry biases. Just because on this show, we are women that have open conversations about being in male-dominated fields, doesn’t mean that we are completely free of these biases. I never really thought of building inspectors being a male dominated field, and it wasn’t until I met Uli Sommers that I realised this was the case. Admittedly when I met her I had no idea she was supposed to be my building inspector! She was suited up and ready to crawl under my house for a look at the crawlspace. As a surgeon that deals with blood and bone, I never thought her reporting...

About the guest:
Tanya lives in Austin, Texas with her two daughters and three big dogs. She and the girls have developed a tight-knit bond, being proud and supportive of each other.
Initially from LA, she moved to Austin Texas because was impressed with its diverse and accepting culture. She found it a great place to raise her daughters. It was only after moving in that she realized that she needed to find a job. She then found an opening for a distribution manager in Greenleaf Book Group. Telling herself she’ll find a better paying job as soon as they become settled, she started her career within the company.
But pretty soon, she found herself loving her work. Although her tasks started out as primarily listing books in different databases, the part where she worked with authors sparked a fire in her. She fell in love with how passionate they were. Knowing that she had a huge impact on making their ideas happen, gave her a strong sense of purpose.
Fast forward many years later, she’s now the CEO of the company. Her discovery that she has a knack for launching and branding authors and the fact that she is an awesome builder played a fundamental role to her rise in ranks.
She also learned to work with, instead of fight against, her individuality. She loves to write, think, and analyze during mornings and becomes more verbal during the afternoons. Her staff and her daughters are well aware that when inspiration strikes her, she will not hesitate to write it down and act on it even if it’s past office hours.
