My name is Tim Kail, and I love movies.
Growing up, movies were often the glue that held my family together. We invented rituals and traditions in service of that bond. We communicated through the movies and we learned through the movies.
We huddled together on couches, we gathered together in theaters, and we refined the art of skipping commercials whenever recording a favorite on VHS .
We rented so many movies from the local video store that the owner offered us a special deal: one free rental with every two movies we got.
These memories represent a tiny fraction of the significance of film in my childhood, adolescence, and adulthood.
In reflecting on the role film plays in my life, I was suddenly struck with the need to create a record of its significance.
I wanted to articulate how & why film is so important to me, my family, and everyone who has ever been moved to think and feel something profound thanks a particular film.
The Five Films is my attempt at creating that record.
It is a podcast that will be published in 2020. It will be seasonal, with every episode available for download at the start of each season.
I will provide more details about the structure and focus of the podcast soon, here and on social media as we near the launch date.
Thank you for reading. Until we meet again.
