The Lou Perez Podcast
This week’s episode is a collaboration with comedian , host of . We talk about being dumb, young, and punk—which for Michael meant being a young Republican in high school. I take a trip down memory lane of that time I was cancelled in Dallas. And Michael shares with me all the insane things I had no idea were happening in the world. Did Michael scare me? Yes. But I’m still hopeful for the future. And I’m looking forward to Michael’s forthcoming comedy special. The Free Press’s went from climate-crisis influencer to climate-alarm denier. I have no clue how big this episode’s carbon footprint is, but it’s worth all the coal we burned to make it happen. Lucy and I talk about her beginnings at NowThis, why climate change doesn’t scare us anymore, hipsters bringing back dung stoves, and how all that . Today’s episode starts out on a disappointing note. My guest Rian Stone, t and author of the novels and , thought he was coming on to talk to his professional-wrestling hero, “Lightning” Lou Perez. I’m sorry I had to break the kid’s heart—I am not that Puerto Rican guy—but I think I made up it up to Rian. We talked about culture as a weapon (see and ); what it’s like to host a stand-up show with Bill Burr in the lineup; my good friend and alum ; and why Rian (and you) should . Turns out, Rian and I are a rare breed: We like things. And we want to get back to making...

A few weeks back I had former Detroit Piston Scot Pollard on the pod and this week I have current…Piston fan . Both men have Piston jerseys with their last names on them. To which I wonder, is it tougher as an adult to wear a personalized jersey? Kirk and I talk about Warped Tour, the ‘04 “Going to Work” Pistons (appropriating blue-collar costumes), Marc Maron’s Doug Allen act, and Franklin Delano Roosevelt (via Amity Shlaes’s ). FDR was stealing gold, killing pigs, technocrat’ing with chickens—and he still gets praise today, even though he reigned before “The Big...

On this episode I had the pleasure of talking with Scot Pallard, NBA veteran and survivor of both the reality-TV show (Survivor season 32) and a heart transplant. Scot’s the subject of the ESPN documentary (streaming now on ESPN+) and a volunteer spokesperson for , which advocates for organ donations. In addition to discussing the near impossibility of finding a heart big enough for someone Scot’s size (he’s 6’11”—7’ in heels), we also discuss what it’s like to meet the family of your heart donor, the temptations that are thrown your way when you’re a professional athlete,...

This is a special episode of The Lou Perez Podcast. So special, in fact, that it’s not even an episode of The Lou Perez Podcast. No, it’s my appearance on Isaac Simpson’s podcast, The Carousel. Isaac was kind enough to have me on to take a deep dive into possibly the most important article to come out this year, ,” as published in the New York Times. OK, it’s definitely not the most important article, but it’s damn entertaining and revealing about where and when some of us are. (It even tricked me into buying a subscription to The Times.) Isaac and I get all the way...

I’m joined by my friend Tran Hoang Calvin of Nodehaus to talk about what’s so special about TikTok, being mistaken for Chinese by Chinese people (we’ve all been there), the iPhone’s insistence that you remember you’re mortal, and how you might want to change your name (and/or gender) for SEO purposes.
Calvin has a great series, where he produces elaborate voicemail recordings. You can watch each one being made in real time on his TikTok…that is until TikTok is gone.

Who am I?
Lou Perez is a comedian, producer, and author of That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore. You may have seen him on FOX's Gutfeld! and Open to Debate (with Michael Ian Black). Lou was the head writer and producer of the Webby Award-winning comedy channel We the Internet TV and produces Comedy Is Murder, a sketch comedy series with Free the People. Lou is a FAIR-in-the Arts fellow, on the advisory board of Heresy Press, and hosts the live debate series The Wrong Take and The Lou Perez Podcast.
During my tenure at We the Internet, I made the kind of comedy that gets you put on lists and your words in the Wall Street Journal: “How I Became a ‘Far-Right Radical.”
How’d I start out?
I began doing improv and sketch comedy while an undergrad at New York University, where I was part of the comedy group the Wicked Wicked Hammerkatz.
For years, I performed at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater (both in NYC and L.A.) in sketch shows with the Hammerkatz and my comedy duo, Greg and Lou. G&L are probably best known for our sketch "Wolverine's Claws Suck," which has over 20 million views across online platforms.
I was a writer for Fox Sports' @TheBuzzer; produced The Attendants with the Above Average Network; produced pilots for FOX Digital and MSN Games; and was a comedy producer on TruTV's Impractical Jokers.
I hosted the stand-up show Uncle Lou's Safe Place in Los Angeles, performed at the Big Pine Comedy Festival, Bridgetown Comedy Festival, and co-created the political comedy podcast Unsafe Space. I’ve opened for Jimmy Dore, Rich Vos, Dave Smith, and Rob Schneider.
I taught creative writing at the City College of New York, "writing the web series" for Writing Pad, and comedy writing workshops for the Moving Picture Institute.
