#320 Terry Hershey: Storm Homes show art #320 Terry Hershey: Storm Homes

The Next Chapter with Charlie

Show Notes   I’ve been reading… books and essays (or blogs). I recently read two articles that seemed to spawn sort of delightful potpourri of thought and conjecture. One was an article on author Henry Miller by Maria Popova and the other came from recent Terry Hershey Sabbath Moment posts.  These are the kinds of ideas that, for me, demand discussion. So today, I’ve asked friend, author, and creative thinker Terry Hershey to ponder with me on several kinds of non-related subjects such as Storm Homes and the totally unrelated subject of the wonder of old age.  LINKS ...

Show Notes   Hey Paul.    Did you know that our guest today, Taryn Voget, is responsible for birthing our podcast, The Next Chapter with Charlie. This show was all Taryn’s idea. After she and I had lunch at a client’s cafeteria, she said something like, “Charlie, you ask such good questions, you should do a podcast.” That was 7 years ago, and today we are on show #319! But that’s what Taryn does… she brings the best out of people and very often that best is about something that feels like a surprising attribute.  And so today, executive coach, high...

Show Notes #318  My conversation today is with my dear friend and one-time personal coach, Dena Crowder. Dena makes the list of one of my “all-time favorite” people. Brilliant, wise, compelling, and… so much fun!  Today we talk about the essentials of Dena’s upcoming book about Personal Identity. Dena writes. “Our identity is a story we tell ourselves about who we are and our place in the world.” Dena and I agree that… Identity is a choice and an expression of your soul’s desire, your passion, your experiences, and your DNA.    With that, it’s with...

The Next Chapter with Charlie

Show Notes   In today’s show, we walk along a journey of success and travail, for the two are inextricably tied together. Joseph Drolshagen shares a convincing argument of the value of difficulty and how to use that difficulty for shaping the life you really want. The two questions Joseph asks every client are: (1) Where are you now” And, (2) Where do you want to be? He believes the answer to the second question, “Who do you want to be?” always comes down to a matter of personal vision.  We address those questions and many more on this entertaining and fabulously...

Show Notes

After a three-month break from doing podcasts, we’re back. I am very much looking forward to our new season. You know, I needed a time of intentional pondering about what I might like to do in my final chapter of what I call “a life richly lived.” This year, in September, I turn 75. Three quarters of a century. Enough time to live a life meaning, adventure, and awe—which has been the theme the of The Next Chapter with Charlie for the past 9 years.

After considering the purpose of my web presence, the theme of meaning, adventure, and awe continues… but perhaps with a renewed and personally vibrant focus. In my most recent couple of blogs, I have written about the American vacuum regarding something to trust, something to hang our hats on, or an anchor in our wild seas of politics, news media, and vacuous religion.

Yes, at 75, God, the Spirit of Life is not yet finished with me. My present calling is to engage in conversations of ultimate meaning and purpose, mostly having to do with the heart—that force which has driven humankind for millennia.

As you know, I am a contemplative follower of the late medieval Christian mystics who spoke in the language of the heart, guiding people to experience everyday life in a spirit wonder and meaning and service.

*****

So that leads to our first guest on our newly directed version of the Next Chapter with Charlie.

So, it should not be surprising that today’s guest is a poet and a mystic… with eyes not on the ethereal but on the practical, everyday vision of life in the arms of love.

Steve Garnaas-Holmes is a gift to all of us. He writes of himself, quite simply and quite humbly…

“I’m a retired United Methodist pastor. I often lead retreats on prayer, poetry, and renewing our language about God. I am trying to be… here… now...” which means Steve, in the words of our dear friend Terry Hershey, lives intentionally in “the Sacrament of the Present Moment.”

Personally, I am loving his commitment to “renewing our language about God.” As a culture, we are in need of a fresh and relevant language about love and presence.
