When Breeders Fail Families: Why Education Matters So Much show art When Breeders Fail Families: Why Education Matters So Much

The Pet Pig Podcast

In this episode, I’m getting honest about something I’ve seen far too often. Today, I’m sharing the story of a piglet and a well-meaning family who were set up to fail by a breeder who cared more about money than about the life they were helping to create. From overfeeding advice to a complete lack of vet history, this family was given none of the tools they needed to succeed—and their pig is now paying the price.      This episode is not about blame or shame. If you’ve been in this situation, please hear me when I say: it is not your fault. You...

Key Tips: • Managing Mud & Rain: Use straw, wood chips, or pavers to reduce mud in high-traffic areas. Amy last was on the show in January of 2024 and has an update for us. She got a phone call about a pig that fell off of a slaughter truck on the Turnpike and Amy brought her to the ranch. She was very injured from falling off of the truck  and Amy was worried that she wasn't going to make it. She just laid in the stall for 2 days and she slowly started to get better and is doing great now. She was checked out by the vet and was given medication for an infection. She built a space for her within a few days thanks to a friend and many donations. She has Maggie and Honey Bee in a nice area where they can see each other but not accidentally hurt each other. Amy had 6 pigs but recently had 2 adopted so now she has 4. Oogie and Boogie started acting up when they would smell Honey Bee go into heat. Amy knew that she needed to do something better for them so she started talking more about them to try to get them adopted. Out of nowhere the perfect family saw a video of her feeding them apples and  the family decided that they wanted to adopt both boys. They got their property ready for Oogie and Boogie and then called Amy to tell them that they are ready to bring them home. So now Amy only has 4 pigs and has an open space for whatever is next to come. Amy is determined to make sure that her families are educated on their specific animal that they adopt from her so that they are set up for success and dont need to come back to the ranch. Amy has over 140 animals on her ranch that she has rescued. Amy tells us how she ended up with over 60 bunnies that needed to be rescued and how she cared for them and set a plan to get them adopted. Amy shares that everything is going well on the ranch but she will always need some form of help. The need for a rescue will always be there so she will always be busy on her ranch but she is very aware of what her limit is. She is always looking for volunteers to come help out at the ranch. She is always looking for bunny brushers a couple times a year.
