Tom and RP give a crash course on digital literacy (how to spot BS in the news) subscribe: to the news letter: https://tnp.us/rpdaily/

Why?…There are 3 certainties in life

Death, taxes and fake news

Fake news will find you

Fake news farms

Exploring 1 example

Fake news that Pope was endorsing trump

Even after this was exposed as a fake in July, it went viral again right before the election…

Seen by 8.7 million people right before election

Seen more than top election news stories from credible sources

Source: The top 20 fake news stories outperformed real news at the end of the 2016 campaign (Vox)

Fact Checking 101: Example Article

1.Uses old photographs from September 2020 (Article dated May 26, 2021)

  1. Example of One - quotes few sources

'Mass exodus' out of Melbourne as fed-up residents flee their state and head to Sydney ahead of new lockdown that will last for seven days (Daily Mail)

Digital literacy rules of thumb:

Requires some self awareness-- Does it matter to you?

How do you feel reading it? Emotionally..

If a headline appears too wild to be true, it’s probably too wild to be true

Find a second source that happens to be a credible source

Beware of the “example of one”

A story being built around one incident and presenting it as a trend.

Don’t underestimate how lazy some journalists can be.

When you come across a clickbait headline, always ask yourself if the article backup what the headline said. More often than not, it doesn’t.

Disney land sandwich for $100, actually feeds 8 people

Know the difference between a primary source and a secondary source.

Know the difference between an opinion piece and a news article.

Credible sources employ professional journalists and fact checkers, non credible sources do not.

There are people out there who can help you find good information:

reference desk at library,

sites that are nonpartisan devoted to get accurate information like factcheck.org

You can fact check yourself

Go to better sources like a book or long form article, google has trained us for easy, quick answers that lack nuance.
