What makes someone an expert or Master at a skill?

In my opinion the only way you can become an expert at a skill is by teaching it. Can you truly consider yourself a master/expert if you are incapable of teaching a class or imparting your knowledge onto someone else?

I have come to the conclusion that your skill level and the ability to teach are two different things. It is possible to be really good at something but incapable of effectively teaching someone your skill. In fact I would argue that if you never have taught said skill, you do not truly have a deep understanding and knowledge of the underlying fundamentals.

Example: We have Two Salsa Instructors, Both have been taught by the same Master Level Instructor.

After 10 years.
Dancer A goes on to become a Full time professional Salsa Performer.

Dancer B goes on to open a dance school and become a full time instructor.

Now we can make the argument that Yes, Dancer A is going to be a more proficient Performance Dancer.

But If I were to ask you who is the better overall dancer? Dancer A or Dancer B?

Who do you think would be able to have a better dance with a completer beginner?
Who do you think has a better understanding of the fundamentals?
Who would be the better social dancer overall?
Who do you think would be more empathetic and patient with new dancers?

If I were given the option of who I would want take a class with, I would say both Dancers Honestly. But I do believe that the Dancer with 10 years’ experience will be able to more effectively teach me and correct me on my dancing style.

I would love to know what you all think?
Who would you rather take a class from The Performer or the Teacher?
Who do you think would be the better dancer?

Let me know in the comments down below.
