I came across a great example of good people doing good things that I thought you would find encouraging. It illustrates well a passage found in the Bible, Titus 3:14:
Our people must learn to do good by meeting the urgent needs of others, then they will not be unproductive.
Single Moms Saturday
Carol Steward, executive producer of our You Were Made for This podcast is also the marketing director of a Christian radio station in northwest Wisconsin here in the US. Her husband Terry is the general manager of the station, WWIB-FM, and in their most recent monthly newsletter, the following article appeared.
“As Mother’s Day approaches, WWIB will be hosting an encore to our first ever ‘Single Mom’s Saturday,’ a special event to bless 10 local single mothers and their children. Last year, through your incredible generosity, you turned the matching funds from our business sponsors into $19,000 for a SURPRISE Single Mom Saturday vehicle repair fund!
“Let’s show these single mothers how much they are appreciated, welcomes, and loved. If you can help, just go to WWIB.com/SingleMomSaturday!"
I checked the radio station’s website and saw that 18 different businesses and organizations were participating in a matching grant for this ministry to single moms with kids.
Good People meeting a need
Here’s the promotional piece from WWIB about this event:

BUT...we know that an oil change can actually create MORE stress, if issues arise with their car.
And that's why we're creating a surprise Single Mom Saturday fund at Bloomer Tire, for ANY current or future vehicle repairs needed by these single mothers!
What does any of this have to do with you?
Is it just me, or does the name “Bloomer,” as in Bloomer Tire, make you smile? Bloomer is a small town in northwest Wisconsin with a population of 3,654. Known as the rope-jumping capital of the world, it’s also where I spent some of the best 9 weeks of my life as a student-teacher at their high school during my last semester in college.
None of this matters to you, of course, but what does matter is the example set by the good people of Bloomer Tire, radio station WWIB, and the organizations thinking about the needs of single moms with kids and car problems.
There are good people out there like this, and you and I can be one of them. Here are a few ideas I picked up from the “Single Mom’s Saturday” initiative. They’re by no means exhaustive, but they are a good start.
Good people do this
- They think about the needs of others and then do what they can to help.
- Good people will spend money to help someone in financial need.
- They think of ways to ease the stress others are going through.
- Good people will initiate and not simply react to the needs of others.
- On occasion, they join forces with other good people to accomplish more as a group than they could individually.
- Good people are productive when they meet the urgent needs of others. Titus 3:14 tells us so.
