Waarom doen mensen dat? Haatberichten schrijven op sociale media; zoveel aan hun lichaam laten veranderen dat ze steeds meer op buitenaardse wezens lijken; besluiten hun kinderen niet te vaccineren terwijl de kans op ziekte daarmee sterk vergroot; vechten tijdens voetbalwedstrijden ... Hoe empathisch en respectvol je ook probeert te zijn in je dagelijks leven, sommige gedragingen van onze medemensen lijken moeilijk te begrijpen. In The Etic, een antropologische term die zoveel betekent als ‘het perspectief van de buitenstaander’ streven antropologen Roanne van Voorst en Michiel Baas ernaar om dat soort vreemde gedrag dus juist wél te begrijpen. Ze proberen elkaar, en jou, ervan te overtuigen dat vreemd gedrag van anderen plotseling logischer wordt als je meer weet over hoe menselijk gedrag zich ontwikkelt en uitwerkt in verschillende contexten. Ze vertellen over hun eigen veldwerk, bespreken belangrijk werk van andere sociale wetenschappers, gaan in gesprek met experts, met luisteraars en natuurlijk met mensen wiens gedrag we écht niet kunnen begrijpen.
