Mom Can't Cook! A DCOM Podcast
Join Luke Westaway and Andy Farrant as they talk about cinema's greatest achievement: Disney Channel Original Movies. From X-TREME rollerblading, to Mermen, to homicidal smart homes, there's something for everyone in these brilliant, baffling films. Also, usually the mom character in the film is unable to cook, and this is considered richly comic. Hence the name.

Marnie Cromwell, powerful witch and Best Person In The World is back with a new plan to unite the human world and Halloweentown: make a bunch of Halloweentown students attend her high school, in disguise, so that no one knows they're from Halloweentown. But having bet the Cromwell magic that this experiment will work, Marnie soon finds sinister forces of varying levels of attention to detail working against her, and must race against time to have humans accept creatures before midnight on Halloween, lest her and her family not be able to levitate hot cocoa around any more. The Haunted Mansion
Welcome, foolish mortals, to the Mom Can't Cook podcast! Consider this dismaying observation: this episode is about the 2003 Haunted Mansion movie, which offered us this chilling challenge: watching the 2003 Haunted Mansion movie. Eddie Murphy plays Jim Evers, a workaholic real estate agent who drags his family to the titular manse with the hopes of earning a big payday from selling it. But as soon as the Evers arrive they realise that all is not well at Gracey Manor, as the house's 999 happy haunts come out to socialise. Will Eddie Murphy stop effing around long enough to save his family? Are Master Gracey and Eddie Murphy's wife actually really into each other? And how is ramping a horse and carriage out of an attic considered anyone's 'way'? This week, the DCOM writers spin the sports wheel and get a teen... [BOXER] who is worried about the ridicule he'll receive for his secret love of... [COMPETITIVE DOUBLE DUTCH JUMP ROPE]. Huh. Not sure how that got on here, but let's see how they get on. The boxer in question is Isadore "Izzy" Daniels, a pugilistic prodigy under a lot of pressure from his overbearing dad to succeed and become the third generation of Daniels to win the prestigious golden gloves tournament. Izzy is fine with this, until one day he takes his sister to a jump rope contest and the scales fall from his eyes, revealing to him a whole new world of *checks notes* competitive jump rope. Can Izzy balance his love of boxing and double dutch? Will he find romance with Mary, the feisty leader of local underdog skipping team the Joy Jumpers? Does this movie's narrator think we're idiots? Jett Jackson is the star of the hit TV show Silverstone, a thrilling spy drama full of karate and explosions. He's also a regular kid trying to keep his grades up and ask his friend Kayla to the prom. As you can imagine, this is a challenging lifestyle to maintain that only gets more difficult when he accidentally falls through a dimension hole and ends up in the fictional Silverstone universe, while the fictional character Silverstone ends up in the real world, living Jett's life for him. If that sounds like a complicated premise, well done for noticing, because yes, this is a challenging one folks. Still, it's worth it for a rare good DCOM, so let's unpack it together as we get into Jett's home life, the confusing technological forever war of the Silverstone universe, and of course, the wicked machinations of the evil Michael Ironside. The Cheetah Girls
High School Musical may have been the most successful musical DCOM, but it wasn't the first. That dubious honour belongs to 2003's The Cheetah Girls, which charts the fortunes of a four piece girl group as they navigate friendship, fame, and deciding whether or not to trust a man who is literally named 'Jackal Johnson.' When we first meet the Cheetah Girls they're performing at kids' birthday parties to audiences just waiting for them to shut up so they can go ham on the pinata. But a chance encounter with a famous music producer leads them down a dark path that ends the same way so many of these stories do: with a dog in a hole. Can the Cheetahs stay true to themselves while doing what it takes to launch their music career? Is one of their dads really Super Mario in witness protection? And why is a full third of this movie a musicless dog rescue? Sydney Miller is a 13 year old girl who suddenly finds herself the owner of a large parcel of land in Hawaii after a distant relative leaves it to her in their will. High School Musical

High School Musical
High School Musical was a watershed moment for Disney Channel Original Movies, when they crossed over from odd, throwaway curiosities about mermen and telepathic horses, into huge mainstream success, with hit albums, merchandise and two bona fide stars in the form of Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens. With all that being said however, it is still recognisably a DCOM, thanks to such unmissable genre conventions as a vaguely nonsensical plot, a budget of about $40, and of course, a weapons-grade Bad Dad. The Even Stevens Movie (2003) is the culmination of three years and 65 episodes of television, which we have seen precisely none of. However, that's not going to stop us from recapping this wild movie, in which the Stevens family think they've won a dream vacation to a paradise island, only to end up unwitting participants in a cruel reality show. Having seen none of Even Stevens, it's hard to know what's a beloved Even Stevens Bit, and what is unconnected nonsense concocted for the movie. Going to the Mat

Going to the Mat
Jace Newfield is a New Yorker through and through. He loves jazz music, playing baseball in Central Park and, of course, the great taste of an egg cream. He's also a person who is blind, although in a place like the Big Apple, he lives a normal life with his friends. But when his family uproots and moves Jace to Utah, he finds himself struggling with his new surroundings. The school won't get a beeping backboard to allow him to play basketball, his music teacher hates him, and his classmates don't seem to appreciate him walking around loudly talking about how great New York is, and how everyone in Utah is a toothless hillbilly who wouldn't know culture if it spit in their egg cream. Can joining the wrestling team give Jace a new sense of purpose and belonging? Why is this movie about wrestling and not jazz music? What the hell is an egg cream? Can of Worms
We all feel like we don't belong on this planet now and then, but very few of us choose to construct an intergalactic satellite communications dish in our backyard to beg aliens to come and pick us up, and even fewer of us have those calls answered by a talking dog with a necklace made of lips. Not so Mike Pillsbury, an awkward computer genius who decides to depart planet Earth when some bullies set fire to his skeleton roundabout (it's a long story). Mike soon gets more than he bargained for however, when the worst scum of the universe make a beeline for his front door, looking to exploit the hitherto undiscovered human race. Will Mike make good on his promise to leave Earth? And why do all these aliens all have human teeth? The Ultimate Christmas Present
It's the holiday season folks, so this week we're cracking into a seasonal DCOM: the impossibly festive sounding The Ultimate Christmas Present (2000). The movie tells the story of Allie and Sam, two teenage girls who steal Santa's weather machine, which you'll notice, isn't a thing Santa is known for having. If he were known for having a weather machine, said machine probably wouldn't have an earthquake button either, but while we're here imagining things, we may as imagine a better movie. Right on Track
Continuing the grand DCOM tradition of trying to get you to care about niche sports, this week's episode is about Right on Track (2003), which takes us deep into the highly competitive world of *checks notes* junior drag racing. Here we meet Erica Enders and her sister Courtney, junior dragster prodigies who struggle to be taken seriously because of a) the sexist attitudes of those in charge of this male dominated sport, and b) the fact that the sport itself is driving really fast in a straight line for eight seconds. Will they be able to overcome these obstacles and win the big race? Listen and find out! Tower of Terror
The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror is a Disney ride in which you get in an elevator that flings you up and down for about a minute. As you can probably tell from that description, it's rich with narrative potential, which is why we have 1997's Tower of Terror movie starring Steve Guttenberg and Kirsten Dunst, the movie we're talking about today. Guttenberg plays the improbably named Buzzy Crocker, a fraudulent journalist who is presented with the opportunity of a lifetime: head to the derelict Hollywood Tower Hotel to solve the mysterious disappearance of five people from the elevator on Halloween night, 1939. Will Buzzy be able to get to the bottom of what happened? Is the hotel haunted? And will his sister finally relent and let him take photos of his niece in an abandoned building? Listen and find out! Don't Look Under the Bed
If you didn't watch 1999's Don't Look Under the Bed when it first came out, then let us introduce you to that rarest of things: a good DCOM! If you did watch it when it first came out then you won't need reminding, as this film is absolutely terrifying and you've doubtless seen it every time you close your eyes for the last 24 years. The film tells the story of Frances Bacon McCausland, a gifted teen who starts to be blamed for mysterious, mischievous happenings all over town. At first she suspects the improbably named Larry Houdini, a strange boy that only she can see, but it soon becomes clear that darker, more Boogeyman-related forces are at work, and Frances must team up with Larry to save her brother, and the town itself. Also, did I mention it's terrifying? Because it is. If you've watched Don't Look Under the Bed and have your own thoughts, email them to us at for a chance to have them read out on the show.
