Caretaker of Wild Horses Diane Delano is the founder of the Wild Horse Rescue Center in Webster, Florida. They are dedicated to the preservation of America's wild horses. They rescue, rehabilitate and find new homes for wild horses, burros and other vulnerable animals. The 44-acre ranch provides a home to almost 50 mustang horses that were once roaming freely somewhere in the United States. Karen Sussman: Pioneer for Wild Horse Advocacy Karen Sussman is the CEO of the International Society for the Protection of Mustangs and Burros (ISPMB. The organization was founded by Velma Johnston in the 1950s. We owe the survival of wild horses and burros on the North American plains thanks to Velma whose nickname was Wild Horse Annie. She dedicated her life to ending their inhumane treatment and slaughter. Karen has carried on Wild Horse Annie's legacy. Karen has been an accomplished rider since the age of four. She adopted her first wild horse in 1981. Karen Sussman started ISPMB’s first chapter in Arizona in 1985. The Chapter signed an agreement with the BLM to do compliance checks on all adopted animals in the state. The program was the first of its kind. Barbara Wheeler: Photographer of Wild Horses Barbara Wheeler is nature photographer with a strong emphasis on wild horses. Barbara started photographing as a youngster with her Brownie camera, never dreaming that some forty years later she would spend a good share of her time immersed in photography. In 1998, Barbara insisted her life partner, Marty get a hobby. He chose photography and enrolled in a class. She went along to keep him company and the rest is history. They spent their first years as bird and wildlife photographers and have had their images published in periodicals, books, and online magazines. In the course of spending thousands of hours in the field, they discovered the wild mustangs. At first, it was an on and off love but grew to a passion. For over 20 years, they spent weeks to months with the wild horses and visited 68 herds all over the US, many of them multiple times. They feel it is the responsibility of photographers and other wild horse observers to educate the public on wild horses.
