Ep 203: Meditation for Beginners
Mindfulness meditation has changed my life. It has helped with my anxiety, productivity, and inner peace. But even though I'd been hearing about the benefits of this practice (and even read several books on it!), it took me years to get started. Mostly this is because I thought meditating had to be formal. I thought it required a certain amount of time or a certain personality type. But this isn't true! Anyone can meditate. You can start as small as one minute at a time. In this episode, mindfulness educator walks us through 10 tips for the meditation-curious, those beginning a meditation journey, and anyone in need of a refresher for what a meditation practice can bring. is our guest today and she leads the meditation group that finally got me to make this practice a regular part of my life. Ep 202: The Secret To Good Goal Setting
Do you find goals motivational or defeating? Does all the hubbub around the first of the year feel fresh or frustrating? In this conversation with professional goal coach , we unpack all the reasons that setting goals makes us groan, and why it doesn't have to be that way. Instead we can look at goals as a framework that moves us forward to create better lives. and I also discuss what happens when you don’t meet your goals, how to identify the obstacles that get in our way, and how to get unstuck when your “new year new self” aspirations meet the reality of carpool and errands. Ep 196: Symposium: Britney Spears's New Memoir
A few times a year, I like to let you listen in on the conversations we're having in the patreon community. Each month we meet twice over zoom to talk about something culturally relevant (we call this Symposium) or to talk about books (a pretty traditional Book Club). This meeting was a bit of a mashup of the two. When it was announced that icon and legend Britney Spears was releasing a memoir this fall, I knew it would make a splash in the publishing industry and in the celebrity world. And it did. sold over a million copies in it's first week of release and there were a few bombshell's from the singer's life, most notably about her relationship with Justin Timberlake. But what is just as fascinating about the content of the book is the way she chose to tell it, and that she was able to tell it at all. After 13 years in a conservatorship held by father, where everything she did was tracked and controlled, Britney is finally free to share her side of the story. As usual, the community had smart, thoughtful, and compassionate takes on the memoir itself and on Britney's place in music history and our pop culture lexicon. To join in on our next Symposium meeting, You can always check out a to see if it's for you. Ep 195: Why do smart people love dumb TV?
This episode is for anyone who has asked themselves why they're so invested in what is clearly outrageous, manipulative, and phony "reality" television shows. I watch Real Housewives every weekday on my lunch break, and as I've gone through phases of watching with both fascination and disgust, I’ve asked myself: why do smart people love dumb tv? What is it that we’re drawn to? Why do we get so sucked into the drama? Is it aspirational or escapism or something darker or is it just not that deep? And so I decided to explore that topic with the perfect guest: , cohost of the . In this episode, Matt and I talk about our history of reality tv watching (starting with the Real World in the 90s), and we talk about how we think reality TV has changed culture, why we’re so invested in the lives of these reality TV personas, and so much more. We talked for over an hour and didn’t even scratch the surface of all that we could have discussed. We do have an extended cut version of this episode over on the patreon page, where Matt and I talk about our shared Oklahoma roots and I'll also be releasing a personal episode over there this week about my time working in reality television in the early 2000s. Ep 191: How BookTok and Gen Z Are Changing the Way We Read + Best Books Lately (with Alex Cash)
Where a 40-something aunt (me) chats with her 20-something niece (Alex) about what we're reading, where we get our book recommendations, and how the algorithm affects both of these things. I often find my 24-year-old niece reading on the couch in our shared home. Sometimes she's pulled something off my bookshelves, but more often she's in her own world of reading, influenced by her age, tastes, and, of course, TikTok. In this episode, Alex and I talk about the differences in what her generation is reading (and why) and mine. Then we share the best books we've both read lately. I loved talking with her officially on microphone because it reminded me that there is always so much to learn from other generations. (And because I always love to talk about reading.) The Writers Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild have been fighting for wage increases, protection against artificial intelligence, and more. Think it doesn't affect you? Think again! Here are the 10 Things I talk through in this episode: What are the basics of the strike? What is the history here? What exactly do Hollywood writers do? How do they get paid? So why are they striking? (And what does striking mean? Can they not work at all?) What does mandatory staffing mean? What is the AI threat? Some notable things that happened during this strike. What was finally negotiated? How does this all affect the viewer? I want this show to be about connection, conversation, and sharing our stuff. This episode is for moms who are drowning in this season. After years of rarely talking about parenthood on this show, this topic suddenly continues to find me. I'm not sure if this because of my kids' ages (11 & 13) or just the season I'm in, but motherhood is something I want to talk about more now than I did when the kids were young. My guest today is , a highly sought after relationship expert, who has helped hundreds of thousands of people worldwide learn how to form and maintain healthy relationships. Dr. Morgan has been a featured relationship expert with Good Morning America, Teen Vogue, and The New York Times. Her new book, Love Your Kids Without Losing Yourself, is out now. Dr. Morgan and I talk about motherhood as an identity and the mental load of parenting that so often falls more heavily on women. We also discuss how that affects our mood, our partnerships and sex drive. I even share a real life example of this dynamic happening in my home right now. If you've been carrying the mental load in your family, I hope this conversation resonates with you and that you'll know you're not alone. This episode is for anyone who has (or wants) a Soul Sister. In my book about friendship , I write about my freshman college roommate and longtime LA roommate . In the book, and in my life, Lindsay occupies the seat on my my life council that I call the SOUL SISTER. And in this conversation you’re going to see why. We have been connected spiritually and logistically and our lives have been intertwined since we were 18 years old. In this episode, Lindsay and I talk about living in the dorms together, living in the Hollywood hills together, the ways we (accidentally) broke one another's hearts, and the ways we light each other up. Our bond and this conversation is a special one. But the BIG reason I wanted to share this conversation with Lindsay with you right now is that Lindsay is a singer and songwriter based in nashville and her latest album comes out this week! It’s called and the first single is available on all streaming platforms now. This is Lindsay’s first full length album in 8 years, it features 13 tracks, and you might also hear that new single spinning on OUTLAW COUNTRY on Sirius XM Channel 62. Ep 182: 10 Things About 10 Years of Therapy

Ep 182: 10 Things About 10 Years of Therapy
This episode is for the therapy-curious and therapy champions. Ten years ago this summer, I was in one of the lowest points of my life. I had a toddler and a baby, was grieving the death of a loved one, the diagnosis of another loved one, and the near-fatal crisis of yet another loved one. My husband was away making a movie, so I was solo parenting and circumstantially very isolated during a rainy season that had flooded our home. And also....I had just started therapy for the first time. I needed the therapy. Making that phone call was one of the best decisions I've ever made. But as many people will tell you: it often gets (a lot) worse before it gets better. In this episode, I'm sharing 10 Things About Therapy that I've learned or noticed or want to share after 10 years of being on this journey. There are practical tips and also my personal stories. This is completely my own experience and not meant to be prescriptive or authoritative - just me, sharing my stuff. BONUS: Remaining You While Raising Them with Alli Worthington
I met author over a decade ago when we were both in the mommy blogging world, and I've long looked up to her as an entreprenuer and innovator in the online space. And while I was a mommy blogger back then who didn't write much about motherhood, Alli was creating conferences, writing books, and raising FIVE boys and a stepdaughter. So of course with that kind of expertise, I am excited to share this conversation about motherhood that's aimed at the MOTHER. Alli's latest book is the opposite of an instruction manual for parenting, which is what makes it so refreshing. In this episode, Alli and I talk about mom guilt, real self care, and the different ways social media and the likes can make us feel like we’re not measuring up. We also talk about our identities as mothers, the magic question Alli wants women to get in the habit of asking themselves, and why it’s important to allow our kids to see us get angry sometimes. Alli Worthington is known for her straight-talking encouragement and practical tools that help women reach their dreams in business and life. She is a speaker, podcaster, author, and life and business coach who launched Called Creatives, a cohort of women speakers and writers. Alli lives with her husband, Mark, and their five sons outside of Nashville with the only golden retriever who refuses to retrieve. * SUBSCRIBE to 10 Things To Tell You so you never miss an episode! REPLAY: Intentions, Affirmations, and Vision Boards, Oh My!

REPLAY: Intentions, Affirmations, and Vision Boards, Oh My!
As we near the 200th episode of 10 Things To Tell You, we're using this summer to pull a few episodes out of the archives from the first year of the show. August feels like the second "new year" on the calendar. Even if you're no longer super aware of the school calendar as a student, parent, or teacher, it still feels like a fresh start after the summer and heading into the last half of the year. This episode is for you if you’re thinking about setting intentions, starting affirmations, and creating a vision board for the new year. In this replay episode from the end of 2019, I’m sharing my experience with setting intentions, writing down affirmations, and creating a vision board for the future. Let me be clear that I am no expert on any of these things, but I do believe that something goes on in your consciousness when you stay open to receiving what the world has to offer (instead of closing yourself off from anything you don’t understand), and by putting in place a few practices that might positively affect your mood, spirit, and actions.
