It may not seem like a big deal at first, but managing expectations around parking is crucial here, especially for families PCSing from the mainland. Unlike in places like Colorado where driveways and spacious garages are common, in Hawaii, driveways are rare, and garages are often small or used for storage—which means people forget to account for where they’ll actually park their cars. Guest parking can’t be used overnight without a placard, and street parking isn't always available. If you want a home with both a garage and a driveway, you're likely looking at a price point of $600k or higher. Most commonly, homes and condos offer one or two assigned parking stalls, sometimes covered, and that's totally normal here. I always encourage clients to think carefully about their vehicle size, too—big trucks don’t always fit in Hawaii garages. All of this is part of why I start conversations with people months in advance: to educate, prepare, and help them avoid major surprises when they arrive. I was recently sent a screenshot by a former client from a Facebook Spouses page, bringing up the issue of on post housing and how they are taking all of your money even during pay raises or BAH increases. She even thanked me for helping her family buy a home instead of living on post. It prompted me to create this episode and talk more about this issue more in depth. On this episode, I dive into why giving on post housing your tax free BAH is an absolute scam and waste of money. Did you know that when you live on post, they can raise your rent any time you get a pay increase or BAH increase? You never get to see that extra money and on top of that, they aren’t giving you anything extra for that money. You’re still living in the same crappy on post house with the bugs, mold, jet fuel in the water, power outages, etc. You are being scammed! So let’s talk about it!
