On this week’s episode of The 1 Girl Revolution Podcast, we welcome Leigh Fitzpatrick Snead - writer, mother, advocate, and author of the upcoming book Infertile but Fruitful. Leigh is a dear friend and a woman whose grace, honesty, and deep, abiding love shine through every part of her story. Leigh has walked the long, winding road of infertility - a journey that can be isolating, overwhelming, and deeply painful. Although she never conceived children biologically, Leigh and her husband, Carter, became parents in another beautiful way: through the adoption of their four incredible boys. Their family is a powerful testament to embracing the path that life brings before you - with purpose, openness, and joy. They remind all of us that life’s greatest gifts often arrive in forms we never expected. What makes Leigh’s voice so extraordinary is the way she invites us to look at our own stories in a new way - especially the pieces that feel unfinished or heavy. For anyone who is hoping, praying, and trying for children… Leigh’s story is a reminder not to overlook the quiet lessons and unexpected graces hidden along the way. Infertility can feel like waiting in the dark, but it does not mean your story is stalled or empty. There is beauty unfolding in every chapter of your life. There is purpose in the waiting. On this week’s episode of The 1 Girl Revolution Podcast, we welcome Katelynn Smoot – wife, mother, advocate, and the fiercely devoted mama of little Lilah, the bright, joyful warrior behind Stand With Lilah. At just 18 months old, Lilah was diagnosed with ATRT-MYC, a rare and aggressive form of childhood brain cancer. Since that moment, Katelynn and her husband have been full-time caregivers — navigating hospital stays, treatments, sleepless nights, and the emotional, physical, and financial toll that childhood cancer brings. While the world saw the incredible moment when Taylor Swift donated $100,000 to Lilah’s GoFundMe and the Swifties who followed and matched it (which is INCREDIBLE!), most people don’t see the day-to-day reality: the cost of cancer, the strain placed on young families, and the unimaginable strength it takes to keep going. Still, through all the pain, fear, and uncertainty, Katelynn continues to show up with unwavering love, honesty, and hope. She uses social media to illuminate the realities of childhood cancer — for awareness, community, and to help others. And in the midst of caring for Lilah and raising their two babies, Katelynn and her family are also working to bless other families facing ATRT and childhood cancer this Christmas, raising money and collecting gift cards to spread comfort and love this Christmas. In this episode, you’ll hear: ✨ Katelynn’s deeply personal story of receiving Lilah’s diagnosis and navigating life afterward; ✨ The emotional, physical, and financial realities of childhood cancer — and what most people never see; ✨ How the Stand With Lilah community came together and what it has meant to their family; ✨ The impact of Taylor Swift’s donation — and the bigger picture beyond that viral moment; ✨ How Katelynn uses social media to advocate, raise awareness, and build community for other families; ✨ Why the Smoot family is committed to giving back to other ATRT families this Christmas; ✨ Katelynn’s reflections on motherhood, resilience, faith, hope, and the power of community; ✨ And so much more. 280: Mama and Infant Loss Survivor - Charla Grim
On this week’s episode of The 1 Girl Revolution Podcast, we welcome Charla Grim — wife, mama, and a courageous woman who is using her story of love, loss, and motherhood to bring comfort and hope to others. Charla is the mother of three beautiful boys — Mason, Emmett, and Garrison. Emmett was born sleeping. Charla and her husband went to the hospital expecting to welcome their baby boy into the world, but instead heard the words no parent should ever hear: “I’m sorry, your baby doesn’t have a heartbeat.” Their lives were changed in an instant. Nothing in life prepares a parent for that kind of loss. The grief never fully goes away. Yet through the heartbreak, Charla has discovered an inner strength she never knew she had. In the years since losing Emmett, she has learned to carry both love and grief at the same time — and she has chosen to honor her son by sharing her story and lighting the way for others walking through similar pain. On Emmett’s first birthday, Charla shared a reflection that captured both the heartbreak and beauty of motherhood. She wrote that Emmett made them parents again. He filled their hearts with love and joy. Losing him showed them the strength they didn’t know they had. He brought their family closer and transformed their lives forever. Charla still wonders what his laugh would have sounded like, what color his eyes would have been, and what his smile would have looked like — but she knows his light continues to shine through the love he left behind. 277: Mojo in the Morning - Shannon Murphy
On this week’s episode of The 1 Girl Revolution Podcast, we welcome Shannon Murphy — co-host of iHeartRadio’s Mojo in the Morning show, wife, mama, radio personality, and all-around powerhouse woman! This episode is a full-circle moment for me because I first met Shannon years ago — when I was a sophomore in college — backstage at a Switchfoot concert. We instantly connected over being from Michigan (she grew up on Grosse Ile, and my grandparents lived there!) and our shared love of music and media. At the time, Shannon was just a few years into her radio career, and I was still trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. And here we are - many years later - with so many stories to tell! Since then, I’ve followed Shannon’s career and admired her journey — from Indianapolis to Atlanta, and then back home to Michigan, where she continues to light up the airwaves on Mojo in the Morning. She’s built an incredible, long-lasting career in radio and continues to inspire so many people with her authenticity, kindness, and heart for others. 275: For The People - Hillary Blout
On this week’s episode of The 1 Girl Revolution Podcast, we welcome Hillary Blout — attorney, advocate, and founder of For The People. Hillary is a powerhouse changemaker who is transforming the justice system through something called Prosecutor-Initiated Resentencing (PIR). Under her leadership, For The People has partnered with District Attorneys across the country to take a second look at old cases, identify people who can be safely released, and reunite families — all while strengthening communities. In 2018, Hillary drafted and helped secure the passage of AB 2942 — the first PIR law in the nation. The following year, she founded For The People to implement this groundbreaking law and spearhead a movement for post-conviction justice. Since then, PIR has expanded into six states and given more than 1,000 people a second chance. In this episode, you’ll hear: ✨ Hillary’s journey from prosecutor to nonprofit founder and national leader in justice reform; ✨ The story behind AB 2942 and how it became the first PIR law in the nation; ✨ How For The People is reuniting families, strengthening communities, and reshaping what justice looks like in America; ✨ Inspiring stories of redemption, resilience, and second chances; ✨ How you can learn more and get involved in this powerful movement; ✨ And so much more! 274: The Bail Project, Still She Rises, and The Bronx Defenders - Robin Steinberg
On this week’s episode of The 1 Girl Revolution Podcast, we welcome Robin Steinberg — attorney, advocate, and founder of The Bronx Defenders, Still She Rises, and The Bail Project. Robin has spent her entire career fighting for justice and reimagining what public defense and true equity could look like in America. Her unwavering belief is simple but revolutionary: every person deserves dignity, humanity, and a real defense — no matter who they are or what resources they have. In 1997, Robin founded The Bronx Defenders in New York City, pioneering a holistic model of public defense that addresses not only courtroom battles, but also the housing, health, family, and immigration issues that so often shape people’s cases. She went on to create Still She Rises in Oklahoma — the first public defender office in the country dedicated exclusively to representing women. Oklahoma has one of the highest incarceration rates for women, and it became the backdrop for Robin’s bold vision: to provide women with holistic legal representation, recognizing that defending women means defending their families, children, and communities. Did you know that women are the fastest-growing population in jail and prison? Robin’s insights into women and incarceration are both powerful and eye-opening. And in 2017, Robin launched The Bail Project, a national nonprofit that combats mass incarceration at its entry point: the cash bail system. The Bail Project provides free bail assistance and pretrial support to thousands of people each year who would otherwise remain jailed simply because they cannot afford bail — ensuring that freedom isn’t determined by the size of someone’s bank account. In this episode, you’ll hear: ✨ Robin’s journey to becoming a passionate advocate for justice; ✨ The story behind The Bronx Defenders and the holistic defense model she pioneered; ✨ Why she launched Still She Rises and how it’s transforming the lives of women in Oklahoma and beyond; ✨ The devastating impact of cash bail and how The Bail Project is working to end it; ✨ Robin’s insights into women and incarceration — and why they are the fastest-growing population in jail and prison; ✨ And so much more! 273: Rehabilitation Through the Arts - Katherine Vockins
On this week’s episode of The 1 Girl Revolution Podcast, we welcome Katherine Vockins — founder of Rehabilitation Through the Arts (RTA). Katherine is a changemaker, visionary, and advocate who saw the power of the arts to transform lives — even behind prison walls. In 1996, she walked into Sing Sing Correctional Facility to support a group of men who wanted to put on a play, and from that spark, Rehabilitation Through the Arts was born. Nearly three decades later, RTA has grown into a thriving nonprofit that now operates in multiple prisons across New York State and elsewhere — and their reach continues to grow. Through programs in theater, dance, music, creative writing, and visual arts, RTA helps incarcerated men and women develop critical life skills, heal from trauma, and discover their full potential. The results are astounding: while the national recidivism rate hovers around 60 percent, fewer than 3 percent of RTA alumni return to prison. RTA’s inspiring story has reached even more people through the Oscar-nominated film Sing Sing, which was inspired by the program and features both professional actors and RTA alumni. Katherine’s work is about dignity, humanity, and the belief that every life has value and the capacity to change. In this episode, you’ll hear: ✨ Katherine’s journey to founding Rehabilitation Through the Arts; ✨ How the arts empower incarcerated men and women to grow, heal, and transform their lives; ✨ The real impact of RTA — including why participants are so much less likely to return to prison; ✨ Stories of hope, redemption, and second chances from inside prison walls; ✨ How the film Sing Sing shines a light on this powerful work; ✨ And how you can support RTA and be part of this movement for change. You may know Collette from her inspiring story that went viral in 2016, when she turned rejection into fuel for her mission and built a cookie empire. Leia’s own cancer journey began when she was just two years old, after being diagnosed with a rare form of eye cancer. She endured 26 surgeries and multiple rounds of chemotherapy, ultimately losing sight in one eye. As a survivor herself, Leia knows firsthand the challenges these children and their families face. Her organization provides financial grants, hosts dream parties, organizes mental health retreats, and so much more — offering not just support, but joy, hope, and a sense of community during some of life’s hardest moments.
