I’ve been holding on to this album for a while and finally decided it was time to put this out. With all of the plans I had made for episodes prior to this, I hadn’t gotten to this RADIO episode. So, without further ado, this is Aaron Stephens, a transplant from Illinois and most recently, from McAllen and now New Braunfels, our northern neighbor. Aaron’s really got a soulful record here, so if you’re into listening to music in the dark, with your eyes closed, do it. If you’re in your car, you have an excuse to listen to the episode twice. Aaron Stephens is a soul singer/songwriter and musician born in Illinois, raised deep down in McAllen, Texas. Writing songs, singing, and playing guitar since the age of 12, Stephens has an original songwriting and performing style that can both soothe and stir. Since 2012, Stephens has been playing shows all across Texas. With his soulful voice, songwriting, and tasteful slide guitar playing, Aaron Stephens and his tight, groove-based band are standing out and gaining some momentum. On June 18, 2014, Aaron Stephens released his first full-length album entitled "Hard Times Straight Lines". Our speakers for the event were Daniel Magallanez (Blackbird Sing), Patric Farrell (Built For The Future), and Edward Welsh (Rumors) and our sound guy for the show was Joey Devine from 502 Bar. The point of the show was to start a discussion, shed some light on local music, and get some attention for local music. We discussed each individuals trials, tribulations, and celebrations they’ve had as local musicians, what some of their experiences have been, and what they think about the situation. We talk about cover prices, the cost of being a musician, venue location, venue sound, the concert goers, and the talent of the band. We also took some time to acknowledge the organizations in San Antonio that are available to local musicians; The Local 782, M.U.S.I.C. Project, San Antonio Local Music Guild, San Antonio Sound Garden, and others who help like Do210, The Owlcast, Vinyl Pizza, Texas Music Spotlight, and 210 Local Media. I’ve been meaning to have Heather Go Psycho’s album Favorite Record on the show for a very long time. I’ve seen the girls a couple of times, but due to the circumstances of the night, was unable to introduce myself to them or anything. Luckily, thanks to Twitter, I was able to chat with Heather Go Psycho’s bassist, Diana. Here’s an update for those who haven’t heard yet, Diana is no longer the bands drummer. They’ve recently added an actual Heather to the line up! Kind of like when Donella Drive had Ella. I saw Heather Go Psycho, most recently at one of the Creative Creatures shows at Fitzgerald’s. They played right after The Black Market Club and before The Lost Project and The Sandworms. They put on a great show and brought a totally different vibe to that stage. I’m glad to finally add them as alumni to the 210 Local Media Podcast. First, we’ll dive into some music, and then I wanted to chat for a little bit.Heather Go Psycho - Favorite RecordFavorite RecordNothing MoreJust For TonightBack 2 YouNice Girls Finish LastThis ChristmasI just wanted to reach out to music fans, concert goers, and ask some questions of you all and share some insight that you may not hear everywhere. First, some information on the music industry I’ve learned. I admit though, that I am by no means a expert and am learning new things every day, so, be aware of that caveat. There are bands, solo artists, fans, talent buyers, venues, promoters, managers, labels, and there’s merch, distribution, contracts, emails, social media, draw, booking, and a whole slew of other things that have an impact in the music industry. There’s an interesting cycle that regular concertgoers don’t ever see, that includes all of the above. Once you’re walking up to the door of a venue, many things have happened to get what you’re about to see, to where it is at that very second. A band who has practiced countless hours, has either been approached by another band, a venue, a talent buyer (someone who works for the venue to books shows), or a promoter (someone who puts shows together with a secured date at the venue), or has reached out themselves, to play that night. Depending on the show, bands can get paid in many different ways. There’s the door split, in which each band is coming away with their equal cut of the money paid at the door. There’s the percentage of the bar, which usually denotes a free show, where the bands try and get as many people as possible in to the venue to drink, in the hopes that the percentage of the bar that they get paid from is decent. It’s also split with the other band(s) on the bill, and is usually around 10%-15% of the bar. That means, every dollar you spend, gets them $.10 to $.15. There’s the sought after guarantee, where a band can make (at least) their guaranteed amount. Sometimes this is a method of payment that works as an either/or with a guarantee. For example, the guarantee is either $100 or 15% of the bar, whichever is higher. Finally, there’s the pay-to-play or ticket selling method. There are so many variations of these methods, that I won’t go over them here, but feel free to look it up online. For a band to get onto a bill, they either need to know another band that will add them to their own show, make some contacts, have their booking agent (who gets a share of the bands cut from the gig), know a promoter (who’s take is also a portion of the night), or they sell tickets to get on the bill with national acts. There may or may not have been contracts, personnel changes, schedule changes at work to be sure all band members could make the show, band cancellations, or possibly even entire show cancellations…. All before you step foot into the venue. Also, I can’t forget the merch that the bands made to sell at the show, or the money that went into printing handbills or designing digital flyers. Does the sound guy get paid by the venue, by the bands, or the promoter? Does the venue have lights, are they programmed by the sound guy, or are they able to be matched up with the sounds of the bands, or does only the headliner get lights? What are the drink specials? Will the venue allow underage band members inside? How much did each member spend on their instruments and gear? Did they ever have any lost/stolen and have had to replace it before? Did people forget to RSVP on Facebook and spook the venue, booker, or promoter into canceling the show? All of this before the show starts. Once you get inside, the door person asks for ID and which band you’re there to see. Why do they do that? Because your numbers count if the band gets paid per head in the door. Because the venue owner, promoter, talent buyer, or other bands on the bill want to see what your draw is. That is, how many people can you get out to your shows. So, here’s a scenario; The Rockers decide that they want to play at X Bar on Friday or Saturday. How much will they get paid if it’s per head, at $1 a head, and only 10 people came out? They get $10. Did they sell any merch? Did they give any away or offer discounts? Was the show free and they got a percentage of the bar? Did you buy a drink? Did they have to pay for a booker or artist manager? How much was gas? Did the guitarist bust a string? If so, a full set is usually about $10. Did any band members spend money at the bar? In case you haven’t noticed, this scenario makes it very difficult for a band to become successful playing shows. Sometimes, bookers, venues, talent buyers, or promoters don’t pay the bands anyway if they bar barely made anything, nobody came out to the show, or the band just doesn’t have a good draw. Scenario two: The Roller Band wants to play at Y Venue because their favorite national touring band is in town, The Headliners. (I said I wasn’t going to tackle this, but here we go) The promoter says, we’d love to have you play at the show. Here’s 20-30 tickets, at $10 - $20 a ticket for you to sell to get on the bill! Those who sell all their tickets first, get to pick when they play for the night. The show starts at 8pm and ends at 2am the next day. If you don’t sell all your tickets before showtime, then you’ve got an option. You can bring us back the tickets you didn’t sell and the cash for those you did, or you can buy out what you didn’t sell so you can still at least be on the bill. That is called Pay To Play. That happens way more than you’d think. As a promoter, I can kinda see why it happens. Scenario three goes over that part. Scenario three: A headliner is in town and a promoter puts a local band on the bill. The Locals don’t have to sell any tickets or make flyers, or reach out on social media. The night of the show is here, and there’s 12 people in the audience for the show. The Locals didn’t bring anyone out. The promoter promised the headliner a $100-$800 guarantee (that could be much higher, depending on the band). So, the promoter looses money and has to pay the band anyway, because contracts are contracts. If all of this isn’t frustrating, I don’t know what is. So, the final scenario: Every band on the bill brings about 30-60 people each, the bar makes a ton of money, the bands split a nice amount, and you enjoyed some great music. By the way, I have to say that I disagree with Pay to Play. Here’s a final thought. Ten years ago, $5 was what you paid to hear some live music. Today you still pay $5. Ten years ago, you paid $6 to see a movie. Now, you pay almost double. I’m doing something I’ve been wanting to do for some time. I’m closing out this year’s podcast season with 4 “radio” versions of the show. These will be 210 Local Media’s Top 100 songs. The qualifications are that they are/were local, played a song I like, and have either sent me music or have made their music available to me. Some bands will be played more than once as we get higher on the “chart”, some bands are totally absent because of the lack of a music release, or because the license to play their music is too expensive. By and large though, we’ve got the bulk of it here. Thanks to all of the musicians that have made this podcast possible, thanks to those who have made getting a hold of music, releases, or promo stuff easy, and thanks to YOU, the listener, for continuing to listen and make me feel that this is a worthwhile venture. To be honest, since this podcast is all about music, art, film, food, and entertainment discovery, I don’t mind admitting that until recently, I hadn’t actually heard any of The Cinderleaf’s music. I had seen their name everywhere, sporadically throughout the past twenty years, but due to the way their name painted pictures in my mind, I was expecting more AFI meets Slipknot and less like The Cinderleaf. I recently got to see them perform “Is Electric No” in full at Rebar and was treated to some really great and self proclaimed Emo-Core. Afterwards, I got to meet the guys, who also treated fans to their “other” bands, The Cemetery Hips, and Cobra Cobra Come On Over. If you’re not savvy, or a millennial, Prog can be exemplified in bands like Yes, Tears For Fears, Genesis, and Muse. Yeah, Muse. Some people characterize it as non-mainstream, super long songs, and experimental in design. By that definition, you can also add bands like Coheed and Cambria, The Mars Volta, and Tool, which many do. Basically, take everything you knew about Prog, or in most cases, didn’t know, and just throw it out the window. As far as myself, and many other do, call it Alternative Rock, even if just for the sake of giving it a listen. It’s largely popular overseas and popularized by the British, but essentially, it’s just music by people who are not Pop.In this episode, we bring you Built For The Future’s Patric Farrell who discusses his musical history, the journey of making this album, and finally making music with this partner in crime, Kenny Bisset. I also get to ask Patric about BFTF, having done something that local musicians have always wanted to do, in getting their music out to the world. In an extremely brief period of time, they’ve sold out of their initial release and have shipped the album all over the world. You can find them in a Facebook group page, called Built For The Future. With only 298 members, this tight knit group has devoured everything the San Antonio ‘Progsters’ have uploaded. We also discussed the fact that it took a couple of decades for them to accomplish what they couldn’t in their youth and have succeeded in doing what many would consider to be a backwards method. Thanks for listening.Demitasse Bio: Demitasse is a two piece acoustic group. This is the side project for Erik Sanden and Joe Reyes of the Texas art rock band Buttercup. Singing at the very limits of their range, the band gets sherpa high, mixing melody, spoken word, and noise. The sound is somewhere between Simon and Garfunkel, Leonard Cohen, and the Beach Boys on a dark day. Or Elliott Smith on an extremely bright, sunny day. Or John Cage throwing his car keys at Yoko Ono.The band records under a strict series of self-imposed rules: their "Vow of Chastity." These guidelines forbid the use of metronomes, click tracks, auto tuning, and unwarranted studio trickery. Being a two piece, they always record together as a duo: so any overdubs are done two at a time, simultaneously -- drums and piano, for instance. They always begin each session singing the lead vocals and harmony together, while playing guitar, and then proceed to build the rest of the song.The live show is almost like beat era music: like two wide eyed, smiley poets, freaking out, but refusing to smash their guitars. Their set up is hyper minimal: two guitars, a drum, and an tiny plastic box. They've been able to travel to a gig on a tandem bicycle, or a scooter with a side car. They plan on touring the country one day in a Smart Car.Hoping to cure sadness with sadness, Demitasse offers catharsis with their upbeat/downbeat melancholy songs: where audience members leave changed, and smiling.Buttercup Bio - Buttercup, a life-affirming art-rock band from Texas, has written hundreds of original songs that NPR calls “jangly art rock for the left side of the brain.” Since 2004, the band has released 7 full length recordings and a DVD documentary. They have toured the US, and have shared the stage with Jonathan Richman, Elliott Smith, Rhett Miller (the Old 97s), Ian Moore, Jad Fair, The Apples in Stereo, Salim Nourallah, and Willie Nelson.Buttercup is a trio of distinct personalities: singer Erik Sanden, guitarist Joe Reyes and bassist odie. The three joined forces in 2003 and have remained the best of friends. In this way, Buttercup is a real band, like U2 or the Osmonds, with long term membership (original members) and a large body of work. Erik Sanden functions largely as a frontman: he is terribly handsome, nigh-literate and his humor tends towards the absurd. Joe Reyes is famous for his unwavering smile, generous nature and, oh yeah, for his Grammy. Odie, a Texas treasure, brings unconventional voicings, deep sartorial sense, and rock-and-roll-animal power both to the bass and to his cooking (he has been known to craft high quality sandwiches on stage).Buttercup’s live show blends visual art, performance art and installation. For example, the band often takes “phone calls” from a red rotary phone that has been rigged to function as a microphone. These conversations heighten the drama and narrative already wound into the show. The band once staged a live talk show with celebrity guests and comedic interviews. That night Sanden handled a snake on stage. On three separate occasions Buttercup delivered a signature piece, Audience of One, where individual audience members were led into a back room (all by their lonesome) and therapeutically prescribed songs depending on their specific musical needs. These unusual shows lead their fan base, affectionately called the “Buttercult”, to expect the unexpected.The band has most recently recorded a full-length record of what Tiny Mix Tapes calls “minimalist pop” with producer Danny Reisch, scheduled for release in 2016. Their side project, Demitasse, was recently picked by NPR as one of the top bands to see at SXSW in 2015 and their song “Comfy Coffins” was featured on All Songs Considered. Currently, Buttercup is already deep into the recording of yet another record of louder original rock songs also slated for release in 2016. On this project Buttercup is joined by the Navaira brothers, Diego and Emilio Jr., sons of Tejano legend Emilio Navaira. This is only the second special episode we’ve done and interestingly enough, it’s for the same band as the last one. To hear Levees first official release, go check out episode 53. Go ahead, I’ll wait. Good, so you’ve heard “Your Spell”. Now, you get to hear their second release, “In White”. Last episode, we really didn’t know much about these guys. Now, they have a bio:Transported from the swamps of New Orleans to the deserts of San Antonio, Levees is a band grown from the creative landscape of brothers Kyle and Kody Anderson. These brothers have been sonically journeying together ever since they picked up their first guitars, and now their music draws inspiration from the two worlds they have lived in, combining the dark, ghostly blues of Louisiana with the southwestern spirit of Texas, making music that calls to mind a cross between the White Stripes and The Doors. Kyle and Kody’s guitar work is enlivened by the driving drums of San Antonio native Skyler Ellis, a veteran of the local music scene, and the sturdy bass work of Matt Stieb, who is also a music journalist in San Antonio. Although Levees is first and foremost a rock and roll band, the group draws its inspiration from an array of musicians spanning decades of time, hoping to combine their various influences into a unique sound that is both accessible and boundary-breaking.Levees has been alive for less than a year, but they have already played numerous local shows, are beginning to tour Texas, have debuted their first single “Your Spell”, and are planning to release their first EP early this fall. During D0210’s Local Music Week, the group was selected as a favorite local band by San Antonio’s Tastemakers. Like the name implies, Levees is engineered of the earth, channeling the larger forces that run through the world. What they have captured is their own. It is dark, it is dreamy, and it is rising. They hope their music takes hold of your heart, inspires it into ecstasy, and makes your life a little better. Before we dive into the reason you all tuned in, I wanted to talk about something that’s going to have an effect on live music ever so slightly north from San Antonio in a city called Cibolo. Nick Marquez, an avid music lover and business owner, will be opening a bar and live music venue called Old Main Ice House. We caught up with Nick at the 2015 Cibolo Food Truck Round-Up, hosted by Michael LaMonica and the city of Cibolo. Nick was awesome enough to sponsor the music that night, which included the Jesse Stratton Band, Storm Calysta, and Broken Duckfeet. Huge shout out to Michael and Nick for allowing us to suggest Storm Calysta. Just like I knew would happen, they we’re both very impressed, as was the crowd. A few different times, there were even a few people dancing! This event in Cibolo and the Old Main Ice House coming soon, in my opinion, will bridge a gap for local music in San Antonio to reach farther up North IH-35, towards Austin and vice versa. My hopes are that it will also open up the city of Cibolo to more local music appreciation. I know most people celebrate 50 episodes, but we were in the middle of Local Music Week, and I didn’t want our milestone to overshadow the theme of the week. So, we’re doing it now. We’re celebrating 60 episodes. In less than 3 years, we’ve managed to develop a global audience, we’ve conducted 17 interviews, played over 30 episodes of almost pure music, played over 18 entire albums from beginning to end, we’ve done a benefit concert for Toys for Tots, we’ve attend the Alamo City ComicCon twice (soon to be thrice), we’ve been able to get media access to other events, and we've connected with so many musicians, artists, filmmakers, and entertainers.We’re so happy at what we’ve accomplished within 60 episodes, but like any artist, we’re hungry for more. Right now, we’re trying to at least make the top three finalists in the San Antonio Current’s Best of Music issue. We’ve conducted some more interviews and plan on even more moving into the next 60 episodes.
