If you’ve been sitting on an idea, waiting to feel confident before you start your business, I get it. I’ve been there. But I’m telling you right now, confidence isn’t the thing that’s holding you back. It’s clarity. In this episode, let’s talk about why I believe clarity beats confidence every time; especially when you’re starting out. I wasn’t super confident when I launched my first business (or my second, or third, for that matter). But what kept me moving forward was knowing what I was doing, who I was doing it for, and how I was going to make money doing it. That’s what clarity gives you: direction. It calms the nerves. It doesn’t mean the fear goes away, but it does mean you’ve got a plan to come back to. I also share a real-life example from when my wife opened her lash lounge, and how her prep and planning gave us the clarity we needed to say yes, even though the business was in a completely different state. We didn’t wait to feel 100% ready. We just had a solid plan, and that was enough to take the leap. Are You Hiring Too Fast and Firing Too Late?
Ever felt like you hired someone just to fill a gap and then paid for it later? Yeah, me too. I’ve been there more times than I care to admit. In this episode, I wanted to speak directly to business owners and entrepreneurs who feel the pressure to hire fast but aren’t always confident they’re making the right call. I recorded this one pretty spontaneously, but it’s something that’s been on my mind a lot lately, especially with the work I’ve been doing at Boxed Business Solutions. Hiring used to be something I dreaded because, truthfully, I wasn’t very good at it. I’d hire based on instinct or likeability, and that only works for so long. Over time, I’ve figured out a more systematized approach: mixing in things like behavioral assessments and even a little AI to help clients (and myself) make better decisions. It’s not about being perfect, but it is about being intentional. And once you start tracking what works and what doesn’t, you begin to see patterns that really help. But the part we don’t talk about enough is firing. It’s uncomfortable. It feels personal. Even when someone’s clearly not a good fit, letting them go can be gut-wrenching. I walk through the process I use now, one that’s respectful, clear, and keeps things from dragging on way too long. It’s about setting expectations early, giving people a chance to improve, and being firm when it’s time to move on. If you’ve ever hired someone because you were desperate or kept someone way past the point you should’ve, this episode will speak to you. I’m sharing what I’ve learned the hard way, in hopes it saves you some stress (and maybe even your company culture). My 10 Year Old Got Punished at School for Doing Exactly What I Get Paid to Do
So this episode wasn’t planned. But I had to hit record and talk about what just happened with my 10-year-old. He got in trouble at school… for doing something I literally get paid to do. The kid launched his first little business. Saw a gap in the market — the school store didn’t have stickers — so he convinced my wife to buy a bunch on Amazon, then turned around and started selling them to the third and fourth graders for bluff bucks. He even brought in a couple friends, gave them a handful of stickers, told them they could keep part of what they made, and boom — he built a sales team. That’s what I do for a living. That’s entrepreneurship 101. But apparently… that’s not allowed. He got told it was “taking advantage” of other kids. And look, I’m trying to be respectful here, but that’s wild to me. The school itself gives out bluff bucks to reward kids for good behavior — and lets them exchange them for prizes. So my son did exactly that. Just… better. And because he was better at it, they shut it down. Not only that, they gave him a mark in his folder. And you know what I did? I gave him five bucks. Told him I was proud of him. Because I am. Look — I’m not bashing teachers. I couldn’t do what they do. But man, we’ve got to stop punishing kids for being creative. He found a solution. He was respectful. He didn’t hurt anyone. And instead of being encouraged, he got in trouble. That’s a problem. Because this was a chance to teach real-world thinking, and we missed it. Big time. Starting a business is never easy—and if we’re being honest, most of us just figure it out as we go. In this episode, I sat down with Joel and Dexter from Hemispheres Cafe, and man, this conversation hit home. These guys opened up about what it’s really like to start something from scratch—not just the Instagram version of entrepreneurship, but the real stuff. Like sitting in a backyard wondering if coffee could be more than just something you drink, and then making a decision that changes everything. Starting a business without a lot of money sounds impossible, right? You hear people talk about getting loans, finding investors, and having to drop serious cash on inventory. It can feel like you need a mountain of money just to get started. But what if you could launch a business with less than $1,000? Is that really possible, or just a pipe dream? In this episode, I share what it’s really like to bootstrap a business — to make it work with what you have. I talk about my own experience of trying to start a business from scratch and the struggles of getting traditional funding. Let me tell you, banks don’t just hand out money to brand-new entrepreneurs, no matter what you might hear. So instead of going for high-cost, high-risk ventures, I’ve always leaned toward service-based businesses. If you can offer a skill — whether it’s cleaning pools, fixing things around the house, or some other hands-on service — you can start small, scale slowly, and build from there.
