What Voiceover Is (And What It Definitely Isn't)
In the very first episode of Voiceover Village, I pull back the curtain on what voiceover really is, what it absolutely is not, and how real beginners can build a sustainable career without burning out or going broke. If you're VO-curious and don't want to waste time or money chasing the wrong things, this episode is your new starting line. I break down the major lanes of voiceover—commercial, corporate narration, e-learning, animation and gaming, audiobooks, and live "Voice of God" announcing—so you can see how much opportunity actually exists beyond cartoons and movie trailers. Then I tackle the biggest myths that hurt beginners, like "a good voice is enough," "a fancy mic means I'm ready to charge," and "voiceover is easy money from home," and replace them with a realistic, encouraging picture of what the craft really requires. I also share my own story of investing in training, auditioning for a year before landing a national campaign, and why I believe foundations and community matter more than shortcuts. What You'll Learn: - The main categories of voiceover work (commercials, corporate narration, e-learning, audiobooks, animation, gaming, and live event announcing) and what each one asks of you as a performer. - Why voiceover is really a collection of many careers inside one industry—and how that means there's room for many different voices, backgrounds, and personalities. - The truth behind common myths like "if I have a good voice, I'll be successful" and "I can buy a mic and start charging clients next week." - How training, coaching, and real-world reps in the booth matter more than gear, plus what "being ready" actually looks like for professional sessions. - Why your early focus should be on reading simple scripts conversationally, taking direction, and sounding like you're talking to one real person. - A simple listening-and-journaling exercise to help you notice what kind of voiceover work feels most natural to you and where you might want to start. Listener Exercise: This week, pick three different kinds of voiceover: a commercial, a corporate or explainer video, and an animated clip. For each one, listen closely and journal: What's the tone? How fast or slow are they speaking? Do they sound like they're talking to one person or a crowd? Can you imagine yourself doing something like this—and which genre feels most natural to you? Resources Mentioned: - ACX (Audible's backend platform) for beginners who want to get audiobook reps and practice long-form narration. - SAG-AFTRA Foundation resources for free training and pro booths if you're a union actor. - Voiceover Village Facebook group to connect with other beginners and join live workout groups. If this episode helped you see voiceover more clearly and you want guided training instead of piecing it together alone, add your name to the waitlist for my live 4-week Voiceover Village Beginner Cohort starting Tuesday April 9th, from 6- 8 p.m. EST, where we work on script reading, performance basics, and your early career roadmap: Voiceover Village is also a supportive community where you can ask questions, share wins, and learn alongside other emerging voice actors as you build a long‑term, sustainable voiceover career—one clear step at a time. If you’re just getting started in voiceover, You’ll get simple, actor-tested exercises to warm up, protect your instrument, and feel more confident every time you step to the mic.
