Episode 74: “Conflict of Interest” & “Call Her Hel” – Hellspawn #11 & #12
George and Pierce get into another couple of issues of Hellspawn because it is, in fact, the #SummerofHellspawn. No one has used that hastag and no one will again. In these two issues, we're going to finish things up with Cy-Gor, seemingly finishing things up with Mike Moran (?) and see what's in store with Eden, the woman who was left in a bathtub previously. As with many of these episodes, trigger warnings for self harm, forced birth and extreme violence if you read these comics. We won't talk about the violence much but the rest we have to at least mention. This week's recommendations are the show Taskmaster, the film Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys and Wong Kar-Wai's Days of Being Wild. Thanks to for being a great resource for our intro atmosphere and sound effects. Thanks to Blake Whitlow for the always useful . Thank YOU for listening!

Episode 73: “Chains” & “Clash” – Hellspawn #9 & #10
Ben Templesmith joins the fray as the #SummerofHellspawn continues! As with many of the previous episodes, we'd be remiss not to give a trigger warning for some of the content in these issues and the discussion of them surrounding self-harm. That said, Steve Niles is clearly trying to set this book on a slightly different path than its been on to this point while Ashley Wood and Templesmith are seemingly trying to be cognizant about bringing a cohesive look to the book as Wood transitions off of it. But we've got Cy-Gor. We've got Mike Moran. We've got Scary Larry and we've got Spawn so we're here for it. The first of this week's recommendations are Dan Jones' "The Plantagenets: The Warrior Kings and Queens Who Made England." This book focuses on the Plantagenet dynasty, which ruled England before the Tudors. If you're a Game of Thrones fan, you might dig it. Our other recommendations are the films Night of the Comet, a super campy and fun 80s sci-fi horror flick, Repo Man, maybe the best Emilio Estevez movie(?) and the Coen Brothers' debut Blood Simple. Thanks to for being a great resource for our intro atmosphere and sound effects. Thanks to Blake Whitlow for the always useful . Thank YOU for listening!

Episode 72: “Shed” & “The Suicide Gate” – Hellspawn #7 & #8
We are halfway through the #SummerofHellspawn! There's a lot to cover in these two issues! Trigger warning abound to for self-harm especially in these two issues! Issue #7 offers a surreal psychological portrait of Spawn’s fractured identity, with dreamlike, unsettling visuals as Sam & Twitch strike a secret deal with Mike Moran and John Damascus tortures a broken Jason Wynn. Then, in issue #8, Spawn confronts a twisted abomination from his past—Cy‑Gor reprogrammed into a killing machine—and also attempts to save Eden, an abused woman who tragically chooses to end her life. We've got existential dread and horror in spades! This week's recommendations are Marvel's latest Disney+ show, Ironheart, and for the films aficionados out there, the video essays of For something Spawn-adjacent, Pierce highly recommends the videos about the and the classic about . Episode 71: “Selling Fear” & “The Big Leagues” – Hellspawn #5 & #6
Hey there Hellspawn! We're back with another two issues of the 2000s edgiest Spawn spinoff, Hellspawn. Chatrooms are buzzing about the existence of Spawn and George and Pierce will dive deeper into Brian Michael Bendis and Ashley Wood's darker interpratation of the world of Rat City. But how does this fit into the the grand anarrative of the war between Heaven and Hell? Why don't these angels looks like the ones we've seen before? And who is Mike Moran? Is he really Miracleman? (And who the hell is Miracleman anyway? This week's recommendations are to identify something in your life that is holding you back and trim it out. A little less existentially, George and Pierce both have some t-shrit recs for you. Pierce recommends you check out screenprinter extraordinaire Zach Merrill's . Zach makes really incredible comic book inspired pieces of art and hand screen prints limited runs of those designs. Follow him ASAP to stay informed about the next drop. George is a fan of for some weird kooky designs. Thanks to for being a great resource for our intro atmosphere and sound effects. Thanks to Blake Whitlow for the always useful . Episode 70: "Hate Me" & "Hate You" - Hellspawn #3 & #4
Summer of Hellspawn continues! And with it, another heavy trigger warning for discussions of selfharm and racism. This week, Brian Michael Bendis and Ashley Wood get a little assist from the legend Bill Sienkiewicz as the creative team dives deeper into the depths of depravity. They finish up the fight against Clown and then investigate the insidious ways that evil persists in our every day lives through pundits with platforms who seek to divide everyday people. Is this just a darker take on the "Spawn Across America" arc? Not quite. Does it improve upon it? George and Pierce will get into it. This week's recommendations are to drink some water, to read David Pepose and Davide Tinto's new Speed Racer book from Mad Cave Studios (issue number 1 drops on July 30!) and for anyone in New York or visiting New York to visit the wonderful comic shop/record store Vinyl Fantasy in Brooklyn. Episode 69: "The Clown" - Hellspawn #1 & #2
The Summer of Hellspawn is here! For the next two months, we will be covering the entirety of Hellspawn by Brian Michael Bendis, Ashley Wood, Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith before returning to our regular Spawn coverage. Before we go any further, we do was to issue a pretty heavy trigger warning for this book and a lighter trigger warning for our discussions of it. If you are affected by depictions and discussions of self-harm, sexual violence and violence against women, you may want to skip these episodes. Hellspawn is definitely more of an R-rated book compared to the main Spawn title's more PG-13 approach. In this episode, George and Pierce will talk quite a bit about the career and ongoing legacy of Brian Michael Bendis, how Ashley Wood has become a fan favorite Spawn artist, what we mean when we talk about "vibes comics" and how Hellspawn represents a new direction for a character that maybe needed a bit of redefinition 10 years into his existence. This week's recommendations are to listen to John Prine, to get outside and move your body and also to play Final Fantasy 9. Thanks to Freesound for being a great resource for our intro atmosphere and sound effects. Thanks to Blake Whitlow for the always useful Spawn Reading Order. Thank YOU for listening!

Episode 68: "Retribution Overdrive" - Spawn #105 & #106
Overtkill's back and he's better than ever! For Spawnie this year, Overtkill's here! (^Obviously, that should be sung to the tune of the Hess truck jingle) But Overtkill is back and he's brought along a new writer for a couple of issues, horror aficionado, Steve Niles. You might be familiar with his work on 30 Days of Night, Batman and Kick-Ass but George and Pierce will dig into how well his work fits into the Spawn universe. We'll also take a brief look back at Curse of the Spawn #23 and #24 and how those issues fit into this era. Along the way, diversions include Jonathan Hickman's Imperial, daring to ask the question 'is Jesus Christ the Original Hellspawn?' and the first three Metallica albums. Plus, we got a letter! This week's recommendations are A Night of Revelry by Havivah Saltz, a lesbian fairytale comic about a knight and a jester falling in love, West Hollywood Monster Squad by Sina Grace & Bradley Clayton, in which a group of high schoolers get more than they bargained for when the drag show they’re attending is attacked by monsters. And also the lovely new record from London post-rock collective, Caroline called Caroline 2. Thanks to for being a great resource for our intro atmosphere and sound effects. Episode 67: "Cautionary Tales" - Spawn #102-#104
This week, we've got a trio of stories that aim to refocus the main Spawn title after the events of the #100 milestone. Who and what is Spawn after the death of Malebolgia? What does he stand for? What is his place in the world? Is his humanity just a distant memory? This definitely feels like a retread of similar stories - namely, the "Spawn Across America" arc some 70 issues ago - but with Holguin on board, the stories do have a bit of a different feel. As always, George and Pierce will get into it and along the way, they'll discuss Holguin's exploration of hopelessness in the world of Spawn, fetid fascinations with fascism in fiction and outside of it as well as where The Town Called Malice finds itself post-Urizen. This week's recommendations are to check out the comics of Scott Bustillo and Rodney Rodis' . Their books are rooted in the world of Tokusatsu. With a spotlight on Kaiju, alien heroes, and demi-gods, their stories blend mythology and science fiction into high-octane adventures. We would also love for you to check out Aquaman: Yo-Ho-Hold Onto Your Hook by Josh Trujillo with artists Niky Lelapi, Andrew Drilon, and Bradley Clayton. It launches in July on . Lastly, we'd like to highlight a new initiative from Wellness Together that aims to expand and innovate the mental health movement through increasing awareness, advocacy, and access via student-based workshops and professional development programs. Episode 66: "Spawn: Simony"
Time to take a detour into a weird little artifact in Spawn publishing history, "Spawn: Simony." Originally published in French by the company that put out the main Spawn comics in France, it eventually got an English translation. Is this exactly where it fits in continuity? Uh, sure! Is this some underrated gem? Uh, probably not! But your humble Spawnographers will do their duty while also talking about the similarities to Robocop and the Fifth Element, reminiscing about DC Comics in the EB Games era and which X-Men are queer. This week's recommendations are to carve out some time for your friends and check in on them amidst everything going on in the world and on a lighter note, Dynamite Entertainment's Captain Planet by enemy of the pod, David Pepose and Emmanuel Casallos. Episode 65: "Aftermath" - Spawn #101
And we are back to our regularly scheduled Spawn programming! Thanks again to Todd McFarlane for joining us last episode! This episode we say goodbye to Greg Capullo and hello to new series regular artist, Angel Medina. Spawn hangs out with Granny Blake to decompress after the recent events of the comic and we get acquainted with the beginnings of this new era of Spawn. We'll get into some personal religious traumas, tried to start a rap beef with Drake - you know, the usual. This week, we have two recommendations. Number one is to listen to music that pumps you up and makes you feel something. For George lately, that's and . Number two is to make the thing you want to make the best way you can make it and/or collaborate with other human beings to make your ideas a reality. Make art. This is and always will be an anti-AI podcast. Thanks to for being a great resource for our intro atmosphere and sound effects. Thanks to Blake Whitlow for the always useful . Can Spawn find redemption? All of this and more awaits and George and Pierce dig into the issue. Plus we talk about some of our favorite comics fights and how this milestone issue stacks up against the past ones. This week's recommendations are to find something to care about enough that you actually take steps to do it as well as 2 documentaries - the 2004 Against Me! documentary “We're Never Going Home” (which is thankfully available on ) and the 1999 documentary by Chris Smith called " Thanks to for being a great resource for our intro atmosphere and sound effects. Should Angela be played on the big screen by the singer of Castle Rat? What's Cyan got to do with this and what's the deal with Wanda's pregnancy? George & Pierce will get into al this and more in the penultimate episode before number 100! Plus stay tuned for a fun little announcement at the end of the episode. Episode 58: Daring Escapes #1-#4 with Chris Osborne
You demanded it so we delivered! The breakout star of Spawn issues #19 & #20, Harry Houdini, is back in his own solo adventure! Tom Orzchowski, Andrew Grossberg and Alan Weiss spin a yarn that combines Indiana Jones, Houdini's own history, gods, demons, religious figures, aliens, time travel and the Pope?! Joining us on this jaunt through time and space is Chris Osborne, host of the podcast. Some of the art is great, the writing is at times bizarre, but you could do a lot worse than sitting down with Daring Escapes. This week's recommendations are Chris' podcasts, , which delves into the similarties and differences between video games based on comics and the source mterial, and the upcoming which takes a look at the lessons that cartoons taught us growing up and whether or not we have forgotten them as adults. We also recommend Assassination Classroom, a sci-fi comedy anime about a group of students who must learn to kill their teacher in order to save the world. The only trouble is their teacher is a tentacled alien who can move at mach speeds. Kieron Gillen's recent Eternals series is probably the best take on those characters.... ever? Episode 57: "Three Uses of the Knife" & "Black Cat Bones, Part 1" - Spawn #90 & #91
Brian Holguin's own little "Spawn Across America" arc takes a darker turn with a Rashomon-style tale of racist violence that's met by Spawn's retribution and then the first part of a Richard Ramirez-referencing serial killer story. This leads Geoge and Pierce on a discussion about the nature of evil in Spawn and how it is and isn't effectively portrayed. Can a comic book like this one tackle more serious themes effectively? It's a mixed bag. Does this inevitably lead to some discussion of Alf? Of course it does. This week's recommendations are to do something frivolous - something spontaneous that has no meaning other than to bring you some happiness - and to watch the Akira Kurosawa classic, Rashomon. 'Nuff said. Thanks to for being a great resource for our intro atmosphere and sound effects. Thanks to Blake Whitlow for the always useful . Thank YOU for listening!

Episode 56: "Seasons of Change" & "The Devil You Know" - Spawn #88 & #89
These two issues are one part "My Dinner with Cogliostro" and one part Brian Holguin trying his hand at his own version of the "Spawn Across America" arc from 60-ish issues ago. The results are certainly darker. Spawn has divorced himself from his humanity and the Al Simmons persona so he's meting out justice as he's sees fit. In a somewhat interesting paralell to the originl arc, he's specifically targeting the perpetrators of child abuse so that's a theme that George and Pierce will dig into more. And who's this Mammon guy? This week's recommendations are to check out some wrestling highlights of the Timeless Toni Storm and simply to go outside and go for a walk without headphones. Commune with nature. Touch some grass. Thanks to for being a great resource for our intro atmosphere and sound effects. Thanks to Blake Whitlow for the always useful . Thank YOU for listening!

Episode 55: "Return of Suture" - Curse of the Spawn #27 & #28
Suture's back, Marc Simmons continues to be here and Curse of the Spawn nears the end of its run. Alan McElroy continues to do his thing and George and Pierce once again lament some of the choices made in this title but they find some interesting avenues to explore the themes and execution of the book. We get an early appearance of Clayton Crain's professional work as well so that's interesting to dig in to. This week's recommendations are going to therapy and the 1977 Joan Micklin Silver classic Between the Lines, a film that follows the staff at an alternative Boston newspaper as they face the looming threat of a takeover by a large corporation. It stars John Heard, Lindsay Crouse, Jeff Goldblum, Bruno Kirby, Marilu Henner and more. Definitely worth a watch! Thanks to for being a great resource for our intro atmosphere and sound effects. Author Ethan Crone's obsession knows no end. He explores the depths of Rat City hoping to find out more about Spawn but is met with a flurry of vague and oftentimes contradicting recollections. Meanwhile, a specter of Spawn's past appears for the first time; Al Simmons has a brother! George and Pierce dig in to all of this and, undoubtedly, more. This week's recommendations are to help someone that you have the means to help and also one of Charles Burns' latest, FINAL CUT, a surrealist tale about a group of friends heading out to a remote cabin in the woods with 8mm cameras to make an homage to one of their favorite sci-fi horror films, Invasion of the Bodysnatchers. We all know that 52 only matters in the DCU but can you believe it?! It's been a whole year of Spawnography! Thanks for taking this journey with us! This episode, George and Pierce probably talk too much about the X-Men considering that this is a Spawn podcast but when they do get on track, they dig into the who, what, wheres and whys of Jason Wynn and Billy Kincaid. And as the world around in real life seems like itlosing its humanity, we take a little bit of solace in the fact that the characters in Brian Holguin, Todd McFarlane and Greg Capullo's narrative seems to be doing everything they can to hang on to every shred of theirs. This week's recommendations are to do something punk - use what tools you have to make art that speaks truth to power- and to check out The Comics Courier, a newspaper-format journal dedicated to in-depth comics criticism edited by Tiffany Babb. Joining George and Pierce for the haunted homecoming of one of Spawn's greatest foes is Rob Duenas, artist of SPAWN KILLS EVERY SPAWN. We chat about Rob's history with the character, talk a ton about the process of comics making and go on enough tangents to make two hours feel absolutely breezy. This week's recommendation is SPAWN KILLS EVERY SPAWN, the recently wrapped miniseries from John Layman (Chew, Detective Comics) and Rob Duenas. The trade is out in the Summer of 2025 so be sure to preorder that at your local shop. Also, check out Rob's site to keep up to date on everything he's working on as well as buy some sweet art at Thanks to Freesound () for helping provide some of our intro sound effects. Thanks to Blake Whitlow for the always useful Spawn Reading Order. () Thank YOU for listening!

Episode 50: "Exterminator" & "The Cleansing" - Spawn #79 & #80
The road to episode 50 ends here! George and Pierce dig into this latest chapter of Spawn and lament some of the artistic choices but overall, they have a good time with this one. The Exterminator case is coming to a close thanks, in part, to Sam & Twitch's investigation and Spawn is ready to mete out some justice. But what is the significance of the mysterious mark that keeps appearing around our three heroes? Could some spectre of the past be making its return? (Spoiler alert: YES.) This week's recommendations are the latest season of Apple TV+'s Severance and 1992 sci-fi-action film, Fortress, starring Christopher Lambert and Kurtwood Smith. Thanks to Freesound () for providing some of our intro sound effects. Thanks to Blake Whitlow for the always useful Spawn Reading Order. ( Thank YOU for listening!

Episode 49: "Relics" & "Bloodstains" - Spawn #77 & #78
George and Pierce delve into the Seven-tinged depths of depravity that Brian Holguin brings to these two issues and in the process, they are delighted by the propulsiveness he's brought to the plot. A killer is loose in Spawn's alley and it's up to Spawn to stop them! Bobby is still reeling from the loss of his best bud, Bootsy. Who is Sarah Frost? Twitch is... DEAD?! How many books are there that are called Nevermore and do they have Davy Crockett in them? (And what does that have to do with these issues?) This week's recommendations are All of the Marvels: A Journey to the Ends of the Biggest Story Ever Told by Douglas Wolk. It is a "the first-ever full reckoning with Marvel Comics’ interconnected, half-million-page story, a revelatory guide to the “epic of epics”—and to the past sixty years of American culture—from a beloved authority on the subject who read all 27,000+ Marvel superhero comics and lived to tell the tale!" Meanwhile, George recommends that our listeners find a way to indulge in life's simple pleasures - for her, one of those pleasures is Athens, GA local coffee shop Sips, home of a damn fine cup of coffee. Episode 48: Spawn/Wild C.A.T.s with Adam Reck
We take a small detour from our regularly scheduled Spawn coverage to take things back to the year 1996 when Alan Moore and Scott Clark were tasked with bringing readers a Spawn/WildC.A.T.S. crossover they would never forget. The result falls a little short of those lofty expectations but we'll get into it. Joining us in this excursion into the now unfortunately known events of this miniseries, is Adam Reck, co-host of the wonderful Battle of the Atom, an X-Men podcast that definitively ranks the best and worst X-Men stories of all time! This week's recommendation is to watch some David Lynch flicks! RIP to the Maestro! And of course, give Battle of the Atom a listen! Their new episodes drop every Monday! You can find their episode archives here: and you can find their rankings of all the X-Men stories they've covered here: Thank you to Adam for joining us! Episode 47: "Sacred Ground" & "Farewell Dance" - Spawn #75 & #76
The Green World arc comes to a close! Who is the Keeper? What does this mean for Spawn? What's going to happen to Bootsy? Issue #75 proves to be one of the best milestone issues yet! Then issue #76 follows that with a heartfelt denouement that helps recenter Al and grounds the book with far more affecting emotional stakes than we've gotten in a while! George and Pierce dig into it further but your humble Spawnographers are liking what they are reading (and you should too!). The week's recommendations are to listen to The New York Dolls (at maximum volume, of course) as well as to check out Steven Spielberg's 1971 flick, DUEL. And if Spielberg movies and podcasts are your thing, you might want to check out Blank Check ( and their latest miniseries, Podrassic Cast, covering the early days of ol' Stevie's career. Episode 46: "The Heap" & "The Void" - Spawn #73 & #74
Eddie Beckett has no idea what the bag of necroplasm he found has in store for him. Before he knows it, he will become THE HEAP! We are barrelling toward issue #100 and we get two of the most propulsive issues in a while. Pierce and George have a good time getting to know a truculent new foe made of trash as Spawn, Bootsy, Cog and the gang deal with the fallout of the last few issues and what it might mean moving forward. The week's recommendations are to check in on a friend you haven't spoken to in a while, just to say hello as well as SPAWN KILLS EVERY SPAWN, the recently wrapped miniseries from John Layman (Chew, Detective Comics) and Rob Duenas (. Episode 45: "Wolfram" - Spawn #71 & #72
The rules of the Spawn Universe are evolving in exciting (and sometimes contradicting) ways! We've got vampires, everyone. Christian vampires, or at least ones in the employ of Heaven, and our hosts are split on their feelings about lead vampire, Wolfram, and what this means for Spawn in general. This week's recommendations are to listen to The Mamas & the Papas as well as an excellent Jon Bois video: The History of Slipping on Banana Peels: Thanks to Freesound () for helping provide some of our intro sound effects.
