In our fifth episode, we delve into the dark side of artificial intelligence by examining the recent emergence of “deep fake” pornography and illustrating how easily any of us with an online presence can fall victim to the sinister ways AI technology is being used to exploit the unsuspecting. From non-consensual deep fake porn videos that can depict your face and image engaging in lewd sexual acts for the world to see, to life-like impersonations of world leaders and political figures doing drugs and committing crimes, it is clear that deep fake AI technology harnesses a dangerous amount of power to manipulate, misrepresent, and mislead – tarnishing reputations, destroying victims' careers and mental health, and even manipulating elections and public markets. The moral and ethical quandaries raised by AI technology are clear – particularly so, as it becomes more and more apparent that deep fake porn predominantly targets female public figures and social media influencers, including famous Twitch streamers Pokimane and QTCinderella, ultimately having a disproportionately negative impact on women without any repercussion or consequence. In our fourth episode, we deconstruct the layers of complexity and competing inequities underlying the dramatic Tory Lanes & Megan Thee Stallion trial, which played out in court – as well as in the court of public opinion – over the past year. Rapper Tory Lanez' recent guilty verdict caused a media frenzy, after the popular Canadian rapper was convicted of shooting fellow hip hop artist Megan Thee Stallion at a Los Angeles house party in 2020, for which he is now facing over 20 years in prison. This trial brought forth many contentious issues that we expose and analyze in this episode: What is "mysogynoir" and how did it show up in the Tory Lanez trial? Do we as a society condone violence against women? Is female sexuality and blackness attacked in order to villianize female victims? Why do we see so much resistance to believing women, racialized women in particular? How does anti-black racism skew the legal process and cause mistrust in law enforcement? In our third episode, we examine why a group of Atlanta nurses were recently under fire in the media and abruptly terminated from their employment at Emory Hospital after recording a viral TikTok video mocking patients and expectant mothers in their care. These nurses fatally participated in the popular "icks" trend where people share their turnoffs or gripes on TikTok; a trend which ultimately got them fired. To complicate matters, we uncover the underlying institutional racial biases highlighted by this viral TikTok, which leads to to disproportionately higher mortality rates amongst racialized patients at healthcare facilities.
