Respecting the People and Work with Jenna and Kelley
Welcome back to another episode of the "Rebuild the Construction Mindset" podcast! We have to say, it's good to be back after a month-long hiatus due to the whirlwind of vacations, work, and, well, real work where we actually get paid. But we're back, and we hope you missed us as much as we missed you! Our goal remains the same: to drop new episodes every other week. Life might throw some curveballs, but we're committed to bringing you impactful content. Got ideas for topics? We're all ears! Reach out to us on LinkedIn or Instagram at Rebuild the Construction Mindset. Today's topic hits close to home because it came from one of our listeners. We're talking about fostering a culture of respect on the job site, particularly among trades. From respecting each other's work to owning up to mistakes, even if they're accidents, there's a lot to unpack. Creating Respect on the Job Site: Introducing Everyone: One way to foster respect is by ensuring that everyone knows each other from the start of the project. Whether it's a sub meeting or a project kickoff, putting names to faces humanizes the process and makes it harder to disrespect others' work. Owning Up to Mistakes: Fear and Ownership: Often, trade damage isn't intentional, but the reluctance to admit mistakes can exacerbate the issue. Creating an environment where workers feel safe to speak up about errors is essential for preventing bigger problems down the line. The Role of Ego: Ego vs. Lessons Learned: Ego can sometimes get in the way of acknowledging mistakes. But instead of blaming individuals, focusing on what went wrong and how to avoid it in the future can turn mistakes into valuable learning opportunities for everyone involved. Breaking Down Silos: Overcoming Contractual Boundaries: Traditional contracts can sometimes pit trades against each other. By fostering a collaborative environment where the project's success is everyone's priority, regardless of contractual obligations, we can break down these barriers and promote mutual respect. Learning from Mistakes: Analyzing Failures: Construction is rife with repeat mistakes, but taking the time to understand why they occur and implementing measures to prevent them in the future is key to continuous improvement. Join us as we delve deeper into these topics and explore how we can collectively create a more respectful and collaborative construction industry. Because at the end of the day, we're all in this together, and mutual respect makes the journey smoother for everyone involved. Take a Pit Stop and Fuel Up for the Jobsite with Amy Powell of Well Works
Come to the jobsite prepared! Amy Powell is the current owner and founder of Well Works. She developed a communication and leadership training program custom-built for those working in the construction industry, specifically for our boots-on-the-ground field leaders. With over 19 years of construction experience, the majority of it as a Project Manager for a Commercial GC, she noticed the lack of training and information targeted and focused on unique challenges we encounter and how to communicate with and lead our diverse construction teams effectively. Tired of looking for the "right tools for the job," she decided to roll up her sleeves, collect her MEd in Adult Education, and compile relevant and applicable information and tools to build into a leadership mindset program to equip fellow industry members to help be the best version of themselves in their current or future industry roles.
