Episode 114: Challenges in Coaching: When is a law not a law?Episode 114: Challenges in Coaching: When is a law not a law? Is a certain amount of stress good for you? Definitely! Is there a point at which the amount of stress becomes detrimental? Most certainly! Is there a law, a model, or a formula that tells us how much stress is too much? Contrary to popular opinion, probably not! In this episode Tom airs his frustrations about an often rolled out piece of research called the ‘Yerkes-Dodson Law’. We discuss the law’s origins, what Yerkes and Dodson were actually measuring and how the law has become a universal measure for all sorts of theories. As we often say, all models are wrong but some are useful. When it comes to the Yerkes-Dodson Law, we may well be exploring a law that doesn’t actually exist. Episode 113: Episode 112: Topic: Leadership Coaching Part 2Episode 113: Episode 112: Topic: Leadership Coaching Part 2 In our last episode we explored how leadership might show up in the coaching room, even if we’re not formally engaged in leadership coaching and why, as Transformational Coaches, we might choose to feel confident in coaching those in leadership positions. In this episode we’re putting an element of theory behind the concept of leadership and in doing so, explore a number of different leadership styles; ten in fact. We discuss the pros and cons of each leadership style and when it might be useful to engage in each. We also offer examples of coaching situations where we have each discussed leadership styles with our coachees. Episode 112: Topic: Leadership Coaching Part 1If you’ve coached an individual within the NHS there is a good chance that you have been called upon to have a conversation around leadership. Not necessarily about the mechanics of the leadership role but perhaps around how the coachee shows up and how they interact with other people. Leadership presents itself throughout organisations and often those without a defined leadership role are taking responsibility for heading up certain initiatives or leading on certain aspects of the culture. Tom has been coaching leaders for 15 years and has found that the main topic of conversation in the coaching room for leaders is other people and the relationship dynamics that the coachee is experiencing and perhaps struggling with. Beyond their people issues, leaders often use coaching as a safe space to explore their concerns, their worries and their insecurities. Being in a leadership role is often a lonely place and being able to have confidential conversations with someone you trust is invaluable. Join us in this episode of the podcast, the first of two leadership episodes, where we explore why we, as Transformational Coaches, might choose to feel confident in coaching those in leadership positions. Episode 111: Coaching Topics: Difficult Conversations - How to have good ones.Following on from our previous podcast episode where we discussed why people might choose to avoid difficult conversations, in this episode we talk about the difference between having difficult conversations badly or having them well. From considering the pros and cons of having a particular conversation; deciding whether to have the conversation or not; preparing for the conversation; and then managing the conversation, we’ve got it all covered. Join us for this podcast, as we take you through some practical approaches that you might wish to explore with coachees who find themselves in a situation where it might be good to be having a difficult conversation. Episode 110: Coaching Topics: Difficult Conversations - Why do we avoid them?Your coachees may tell you about a sticky situation or problematic people that they have in their lives, and talk about the stress that this is causing them. Often, one of the options that the coachee has to help resolve the issue is to have a conversation with someone else involved, but they may be avoiding this option. Understanding why a coachee might be choosing not to have what they might perceive as a difficult conversation is useful and may help you to facilitate the coachee’s thinking. This may well result in them deciding to have a crucial conversation with someone that improves their situation. So in this episode we start to explore the topic of difficult conversations, discussing why people might not be having them, and looking at what might help your coachee to see them from a new perspective. Episode 109: More Love in the Coaching RoomIf you listened to Episode 108 you will have heard Tom discussing the ways in which we might show up in the coaching room. Tom made the point that an approach of judgement might be an easy way for us to show up in our coaching , but perhaps love might be a more useful way to be in order to draw out the real coachee sitting before us. Well, one podcast episode didn’t provide Tom with enough space to consider the fact that often either the coach or the coachee could show up in fear in the coaching room, for all sorts of reasons. So this episode continues where Tom left off, and offers his reflections on fear and how an approach of love might dissolve the fear. There are some philosophical musings and even some poetry in this episode, so join Tom, flying solo once again, in another podcast focused on love in the coaching room. Enjoy the podcast? Episode 108: Love in the Coaching RoomJust to avoid any confusion, we are not addressing the topics of romantic love, sexual attraction or attachment in the coaching room in this episode, although they might crop up in a future episode. Tom is on his own for this podcast and is offering some reflections on how we might show up as a coach. It would be very easy for us to show up in judgement of our coachees and to prove our worth by pointing out the error of their ways. We’re the experts after all. We know what’s what. Or maybe, just maybe, we can show up with love, and hold that loving space for someone whilst they explore their situation fully. In showing up with love, we allow the coachee to be their true, authentic self and to feel comfortable in being vulnerable and open with us in what is a protected space and a relationship of trust. Join Tom in his musings about the nature of love in the coaching room. As he meanders through the podcast he’ll be throwing in some reflections on his values and telling some stories to illustrate how love might show up in our coaching. Enjoy the podcast? Episode 107: Coaching Challenge – PresenceWe consider the coaching space a sacred one. It is a safe, welcoming, confidential and non-judgemental space that allows the coachee to engage in conversation in an authentic, open and honest way. It is a space that fosters trust and connection. That’s the space that we, as coaches, are looking to create in the coaching room and that requires some presence on our part. But what do we mean when we talk about coaching presence? In this episode we explore what coaching presence is. We also explore how we might create the optimal conditions for an open and honest coaching conversation that generates new thinking on the part of the coachee. Enjoy the podcast? Episode 106: Interview – Dr. Jo HackingIt is always wonderful when we hear about the different ways in which our coaching doctors are using their skills, so when Dr Jo Hacking told us about the retreats that she is running, and how impactful adopting a coaching approach on them has been, we thought we really ought to find out more In this episode Helen catches up with Jo to do just that. Jo has a background as a Consultant in Paediatric Emergency Medicine but experienced burnout in 2017/18. She stepped away from medicine completely in 2022 to focus on her family, and her business. Episode 105: Coaching Topic – Emotional IntelligenceEmotional Intelligence is a relatively new phrase but not a new concept. The Greeks and the Romans were giving thought to the problems we all have with our emotions thousands of years ago. The fact that we’re all still struggling to master our responses to events that produce emotions suggests that we haven’t evolved very much emotionally in the last few millennia. So, Emotional Intelligence is definitely a concept worth exploring. Which is exactly what we’re doing in this podcast. Turning to the granddaddy of modern Emotional Intelligence, Daniel Goleman, we’re exploring the different domains of his model and giving thought to how Emotional Intelligence shows up in the coaching room. So, join us for a fascinating discussion about how we might help our coachees to be more emotionally self-aware; better able to manage their responses to emotions; more aware of other’s emotions and more accomplished at managing their relationships. Episode 104: Coaching Tool – Transtheoretical Model of ChangeTransformational Coaching is all about helping our coachees achieve a change in their lives, whether that be in terms of making lifestyle changes, changing the dynamics of a relationship, or the coachee just changing their perspective. Change is at the forefront of everything we do and in this podcast episode we’re exploring another model, which might just help us to explore the change process with our coachees. The Transtheoretical Model of Change has been used for half a century in the medical world in conversations around change. Originally used in the context of addiction, the model is commonly used by medics exploring behavioural change relating to health. It also has its place in the coaching world when we’re trying to understand where our coachee is on the journey to making the changes they want to see. Resources: Enjoy the podcast? Episode 103: Coaching Approaches – Systemic CoachingTo borrow some words from a famous philosopher, ‘No coachee is an island’. We all exist within some kind of system, whether it’s in the workplace, within our social lives, or within a family. In the coaching room there will always be influences and echoes of the coachee’s system as they talk through their situation, their experiences and their desired outcomes. In Gestalt we talk about the contact boundary, where we meet our environment and where our environment meets us, and there is a constant interplay between the two. One cannot fail to have an impact on the other. In this episode, we take a look at systemic coaching, an approach that acknowledges and explores the dynamics of the systems within which the coachee resides. Enjoy the podcast? Episode 102: Coaching Challenge – The Grey Space Between Coaching And TherapyDo you worry about your coaching crossing over in to therapy? We tend to find that our coaching doctors worry about this, perhaps more so than non-medical people who enter the world of coaching. In this episode we explore the grey area on the borders of counselling and coaching, including how to navigate it. We will share our own experiences of situations in the coaching room where something other than coaching is required. We hope to set your minds at rest, and provide you with some more understanding, or at least to shine a little light into the grey. Enjoy the podcast? Episode 101: To Celebrate or reflect? That is the questionIn the last episode we were celebrating our first 100 podcast episodes with some reflections on the coaching tools that the coaching doctors we have interviewed love to use. We had great fun reminding ourselves of the wonderful coaches that we have talked to on the podcast over the past two years. We had intended to include their favourite coaching questions too, but we got a bit carried away with ourselves and ended up running out of time. So, this week we are revisiting our coaching interviews and reflecting on the coaching questions that our coaching doctors find most useful in their coaching conversations. Episode 100: A Bit of a Celebration of our first 100 episodesWe’re pretty amazed that we have managed to produce 100 episodes of this podcast, and even more impressed that so many of you are listening to us rambling on every week. It seems that we accompany many dog walks and morning runs. It fills us with joy every time we receive a message from someone letting us know how much they’ve enjoyed and benefited from listening. In this episode we take a moment to celebrate, and to reflect. We’ve gone back through the archive of interviews with our coaching doctors that we have had the pleasure of creating over the last two years and remind ourselves of the variety of coaching tools that they love to use. Episode 99: Interview with Dr. Becky HowieWe’re delighted that our Transformational Coaching Diploma for Lifestyle Medicine has resonated with so many doctors that have an interest in bringing about lifestyle change for their patients and coaching clients. In this episode Tom chats with Dr Becky Howie, a delegate on the first cohort of our Transformational Coaching Diploma for Lifestyle Medicine. Becky is a GP, a GP appraiser, a lifestyle medicine doctor, a transformational health coach, a women's health columnist, a group consultation advocate. And as if that wasn't enough, in 2024, she entered the world of television with regular appearances as a medical expert on Scotland Tonight. Tom caught up with Becky to find out about her journey into the world of lifestyle medicine and coaching; her approach to coaching; her favourite coaching tools and questions; and what learning to coach has given her. Episode 98: Recommended Read for CoachesWe fully recognise that you don’t learn to coach by reading a book; you have to practice coaching to improve your craft. However, we have both read a vast array of coaching books and have another sizeable collection on our Kindles, waiting for us to find the time to explore. We also have our favourites that we continue to dip into to remind us of theories, tools and techniques that we have encountered. In addition, we love a good book recommendation, and are often asked for them by our trainees. So, in this episode, we are exploring some of the books that could be added to your ‘to be read’ list, in relation to different coaching approaches - and we throw in a few extra tombs that aren’t really coaching books, but we love them! Episode 97: Coaching Topics – ConfidenceIssues around confidence come up in the coaching room regularly. And it’s a common topic that new coaches want to understand more about working with. Feeling more confident takes time, and arguably more than time spent thinking about it. You might be wondering what approach to use, what tools might be helpful, and whether asking questions really can unlock the secrets of feeling and acting in a more confident way? In this episode we explore how we might work with coachees to help them take steps to understand and improve their confidence and find out what Helen’s top tips are on this intriguing topic. Episode 96: Coaching Tools – The SPACE modelWe have previously discussed Cognitive Behavioural Coaching (CBC) on the podcast and touched on a couple of the useful coaching models that originate in this approach. In this episode we explore the SPACE model, which is a great tool for helping coachees to dive into the way that they’re perceiving their situation and allowing them to gain some perspective. The SPACE model, often referred to as the hot cross bun model, is an accessible tool that can inform our coaching questions, helping our coachees to explore the ways in which they’re reacting to events. It can also be used explicitly to support coachees to find new ways to see their world and explore different ways of being in the future. Listen in while we take you through this simple yet powerful model. Resources: Enjoy the podcast? Episode 95: Coaching Approaches – Coaching OutdoorsFrom a ‘walk and talk’ in nature to the metaphors of the landscape, coaching outdoors means many things to many coaches. In this episode Helen interviews Anna-Marie Watson, host of the Coaching Outdoors podcast about this multi faceted approach to coaching and how she got started with it. An ex-Army officer, Anna Marie is never happier than when she is outdoors. She is an accredited coach and coach supervisor who loves to move her coaching away from a Zoom window and the confines of four walls and take her conversations with coachees into nature. Join Helen and Anna-Marie as they explore coaching through an alfresco lens and offer a different, airier, perspective on coaching conversations that we hope will pique your interest and generate some new thinking about the way you coach. And of course, if you want to give it a try, you can join us in some outdoor coaching on the eve of our coaching conference in April 2025. Episode 94: Coaching Challenge – IntuitionMany coaches consider themselves to be intuitive coaches? We see it quite a lot in marketing literature and on social media. But what does it really mean in the coaching room? Is it really a phenomenon? Here at Your Coaching Journey we have had some interesting discussions on the topic of intuition over the years and we don’t always see eye to eye. Tom takes more of a psychological approach to life and coaching and Helen is more at home in the world of spirituality, so there are some differences in the way we approach intuition. That said, there is some common ground, and in this episode we share our thoughts, have a healthy debate and see where we end up in our thinking about being an intuitive coach. Enjoy the podcast? Episode 91: Coaching Topics – PerfectionismPerfectionism is a phenomenon that can easily get in the way of our progress, and can certainly impact our sense of achievement, satisfaction and overall wellbeing. For your perfectionist coachees, they are likely to see the drive to be perfect as a good thing that has rewarded them in the past. They probably thrived during their education and in their careers because they are high-achievers. They probably wear their perfectionism as a badge of honour. But all is not necessarily well in the world of perfectionists. In this episode we explore how Perfectionism might show up in the coaching room, how it might be de-railing some of our coachees and leading them to have a sense of low self-worth. Hopefully, after listening to our conversation, you might be able to recognise when perfectionism is emerging in the coaching room. You’ll then be able to work with your coachees to help them overcome this need for everything to be perfect, find some self-compassion and to celebrate times when good enough is good enough. Episode 90: Coaching Tools – Six Thinking HatsIn a bid to help our coachees generate new thinking, it might be useful to introduce them to a coaching tool called ‘The Six Thinking Hats’, which was created by Dr. Edward De Bono, a Maltese physician who is probably best known for introducing the world to the concept of lateral thinking. In this podcast episode we explore what ‘The Six Thinking Hats’ offers to the world of coaching and give our thoughts on why it is such a useful model to generate new thinking and new perspectives in the coaching room. We even play out a little vignette of a coaching session for a GP looking to introduce a new initiative into her practice. I don’t think we’ll be winning any awards for our acting, but it might help to hear how the thinking hats could be used. Edward De Bono’s hats were, of course, metaphorical, but the use of actual hats is always optional. Enjoy the podcast? Episode 89: Coaching Approaches – Narrative CoachingWe believe that coaching is all about helping our coachees to generate new thinking. However, in order to generate new thinking, it’s useful for our coachees to know what they’re already thinking and what has led them to tell the stories they’re telling. There is power, wisdom and insight sitting within the stories our coachees tell, as well as contradiction, tension and dissonance, if only we took the time to really listen and be truly present. Narrative coaching taps into our coachee’s storytelling, seeking to uncover the beliefs, the assumptions, the internal struggles and the different parts that they are playing. Through this fascinating approach to coaching, we can start to explore the tales our coachee’s tell and start to discern what is a helpful story and when, perhaps, a better, alternative story might be advantageous for the coachee to tell. In this episode of our podcast, we explore what narrative coaching is, where it comes from and how it can be used when helping coachees to explore the situations they face and the stories they are telling themselves. Episode 88: Coaching Challenge – Unconscious BiasWe love that coaching helps our coachees to generate new thinking. If you’re self-aware as a coach and continue to engage in reflective practice your coaching conversations are going to help you to develop your own thinking too. But what happens when your unconscious thought processes start to get in the way of your own performance in the coaching room, and your coachee’s unconscious prohibits their ability to think through their situation in an open and expansive way. In this episode we explore unconscious bias and how the phenomenon might impact us as coaches, as well as limiting our coachee’s ability to do some really good thinking. The problem with unconscious biases is that we don’t know we have them, even though we recognise that other people are subject to them; a phenomenon known as the bias blindspot. We believe that unconscious bias is a fascinating subject to shine a light on and to identify some rather interesting specific biases. So, we’ll be doing a little bit of that as well as exploring how we, as coaches, can remain open to the possibility of us bringing our own biases into the coaching room. We’ll also discuss how you are able to introduce the idea of unconscious bias to your coachees, allowing them to consciously bring some of their own biases to light and start to unpick them. Awareness is the first step to being able to mindfully dispel some of our more unhelpful unconscious thinking. We hope you enjoy the conversation and that it starts your own journey of self-discovery around your unconscious biases. Enjoy the podcast? Episode 85: Coaching Topics – Social HealthOur social connections are vital to our wellbeing as human beings. Every model of wellbeing has relationships as one of its components but it very rarely gets talked about directly with patients, clients or coachees. We talk about physical health and mental health, but social health tends to get overlooked. Much of the deep thinking that’s been dedicated to the issue, from Aristotle to Brené Brown, recognises that it’s the deeper connections that we have with people that are the most important. But how do we talk to coachees about their social health and support them in giving thought to navigating their relationship landscape and strengthening some of those human bonds. In this episode we explore some of the research and developing ideas around social health, We also discuss ways in which we might start to have meaningful conversations with our coachees about their own social health.
