WHOA!!! Here's our 75th episode, not including bonus episodes! I can't believe it - well, yeah, I can, whatever. This week we're keeping The Professionals Series going with our favorite Grifters - Con Men/Con Women, etc. This started out being a very easy list for me, but then again I was trying not to be overly obvious. I did trump my sister on a couple of movies, though - one of which I could have sworn we'd watched together, but I'll be quite excited to watch them with her when I visit in April. If you've tried to send us an email in the past few weeks, you probably thought we were making up that address...well, we weren't, I just forgot to renew our domain - oops. I'm hoping that explains the lack of engagement from our community, LOL. So that email is: . Let us know if there's a topic you want us to take on!!

I don't know about y'all, but I could talk about movie cops in a dozen different ways - and I think even Annie would say the same. You often get cops in buddy movies - like Riggs and Murtaugh, Tango and Cash, etc. And then you have the franchise people - for which we do have something to say in this episode. And we haven't even talked about TV cops yet at all. I am trying my darndest not to break Annie's rule after our first episode on teachers. Hope you enjoy this episode. The Professionals Series: Our Top Five Favorite ACTORS
Okay, raise your hand if this is your favorite series so far? It might be mine, I haven't decided yet. But we sure are having a lot of fun. This week, for The Professionals Series, we are talking about our favorite characters who are playing Actors. That's right - actors playing actors, who knew? Talking about these characters was great fun for us. While he didn't make the list, I continue to think about Leonardo DiCaprio's performace in a little Woody Allen movie called CELEBRITY, from 1998. This was, of course, coming off of Leo's huge star-making turn in TITANIC so it's ironic that he's an actor playing a typical celebrity actor. Maybe not so many women in his bed, though, I don't know. Just like any other role, actors playing actors dive deep into research. They study the mannerisms, speech patterns, and body language of actors both past and present to capture the essence of their character's profession. Actors portraying actors might find themselves reflecting on their own experiences in the industry. Drawing from personal anecdotes, struggles, and triumphs can add authenticity to their portrayal and create a layered performance that resonates with audiences (Annie and I had 1 bit of overlap in this show, and it's definitely a reflection of this point here.) What do you think of our list? We'd love to hear your thoughts -

The Professionals Series - Our Top Five Favorite Movie Doctors
Welcome to the next episode in our Professionals Series - DOCTORS. Doctors, the real-life heroes in the medical drama of life. Representing them correctly in movies? Oh, it's crucial! Setting Realistic Expectations: Ever notice how in movies, doctors seem to have the superpower of solving complex cases in an hour? Let's talk about the importance of setting realistic expectations. Medicine is more than just quick diagnoses; it's about diligence, teamwork, and sometimes, the reality of uncertainty. Humanizing the White Coat: Doctors aren't just walking textbooks with stethoscopes. Accurate portrayals help humanize them, showcasing the emotional toll, personal sacrifices, and the occasional self-doubt. It's like adding vibrant colors to the canvas, making the narrative richer and more relatable. Reflecting Diversity in Medicine: Doctors are a diverse group. Movies should reflect this diversity, breaking away from the one-size-fits-all portrayal. Whether it's different specialties, backgrounds, or challenges, let's celebrate the multifaceted world of medicine. Highlighting Ethical Dilemmas: Medicine often involves navigating ethical minefields. From tough decisions to moral dilemmas, movies can explore these aspects, sparking important conversations about the complexities doctors face. Addressing Mental Health in Medicine: Doctors are human, too, dealing with the weight of responsibility and high-stakes situations. Addressing the mental health aspect in movies helps destigmatize seeking help and emphasizes the importance of well-being in the medical profession. Let us know how you feel about our approach to this show as well as our choices! We want to hear from you!

In this episode of the 'top five' podcast, my sister Annie and I launched a new series where we explore portrayals of different careers in movies. We opted to start with Teaching, with this episode making me reflect back on our "Top Five Movies About College" episode. Despite veering off the beaten path, we discuss both movies and characterizations that we think reflect disparate elements of the education system and the teaching profession as a whole. It was a unique discussion as Annie and I approached this series concept differently but it gave us context for the series, which I do anticipate will be a BIG one. The Guilty Pleasure Series: Our Top Five Favorite GP Television Shows
We're up to the second episode of our Guilty Pleasure Series - and after the Movies Episode, which was very difficult for Annie, bless her heart, we are back with our favorite Guilty Pleasure TV shows and this one was just a tad bit easier. Still silly. Remember - guilty pleasures are like the secret stash of chocolate you hide in your desk drawers β they're indulgent and maybe a tad bit naughty. And yet, even though they are guilty pleasures, we don't always feel super guilty at all, do we? And what are the defining characteristics of guilty pleasure shows anyway? Well, first off, they often defy the norms of what's considered "high-brow" or "cultured." It's that guilty feeling you get when you know you probably should be reading a classic novel but, instead, you're binge-watching a reality show. They also tend to be a bit over-the-top, whether it's the drama, the humor, or the sheer outrageousness of it all. It's like they crank everything up to 11 (from SPINAL TAP, which could in itself be a Guilty Pleasure, haha), and we can't help but be drawn in. Plus, guilty pleasures often provide a quick fix of entertainment β no need to overthink, just enjoy the ride.

The Guilty Pleasure Series: Our Top Five Favorite Guilty Pleasure MOVIES

The Guilty Pleasure Series: Our Top Five Favorite Guilty Pleasure MOVIES
Well - y'all know we HATE to be behind on these shows, but sometimes life just gets in the way, right? Apologies all around for keeping you hanging for - OMG - three weeks. I mean, we get to start missing it, too, LOL. So this new series is all about The Guilty Pleasure. Heather Z. and I were working up an episode on Guilty Pleasure TV shows, but then Annie dropped the series idea into my lap and we were off to the races. And let's just all make fun of my sister for just two seconds - she really had a tough time with this first episode: Guilty Pleasure Movies. But before we go too far into embarrassing my amazing co-host, let's just break down what we mean by Guilty Pleasure... A guilty pleasure is like that secret stash of chocolate you keep hidden in your desk drawer (or, as in my case, Jolly Rancher candy) β you know you shouldn't indulge too much, but you simply can't resist. It's those movies, songs, or activities that bring us immense joy, even if they don't necessarily align with our usual taste or the highbrow standards of society. Guilty pleasures often have a certain addictive quality, a magnetic pull that draws us in, leaving us utterly captivated...or ashamed and embarassed. Now, let's talk about how they differ from cult classics. Cult classics are like those vintage vinyl records that only true connoisseurs appreciate. They're not just loved; they're adored, celebrated, and embraced by a devoted fanbase. Cult classics usually have a niche appeal, captivating a specific group of enthusiasts with their unique charm, quirky characters, or unconventional storytelling. These gems achieve a level of cult status because they resonate deeply with their audience, creating a shared sense of belonging among fans. So, while both guilty pleasures and cult classics bring us immense joy, the distinction lies in their reception. Guilty pleasures might be seen as indulgent delights we enjoy privately, while cult classics are cherished openly, forming connections and communities around their magnetic allure. It's fascinating how these different forms of entertainment enrich our lives, isn't it? And thus, yet another reason why you can't help but appreciate this show, am I right? So - enjoy! Make fun of us all you want, LOL. And, hey, we want to know what you think!! Send us an email: . Tell us your thoughts, and get ready for the next episode in the series!

The Playlist of Our Lives: Five Songs that Tell Our Personal Story (and this one gets personal!)

The Playlist of Our Lives: Five Songs that Tell Our Personal Story (and this one gets personal!)
Well, we are busting out all sorts of first's with this week's episode...Kris cried on the show for the first time, and DANG did we get all sorts of personal. It was like group therapy, but it was just me and Annie. And it was pretty freaking awesome. Creating a musical playlist about your life can be an incredibly fun and introspective experience. Think of it as curating the soundtrack of your life's adventures! Here's how you can go about it: Reflect on Your Life's Phases: Think about the different phases of your life - childhood, teenage years, adulthood, pivotal moments, challenges, and successes. Each phase might have a different musical vibe. Identify Key Songs: Choose songs that resonate with those phases. It could be a song you heard during a special moment, something that reflects your emotions, or simply a tune you can't get out of your head. Embrace Diversity: Don't stick to one genre. Your life is multi-faceted, so let your playlist be diverse. Include rock, pop, classical, hip-hop, or even some traditional tunes. Add Some Nostalgia: Include songs from your past, perhaps ones that remind you of your childhood or your early relationships. Nostalgia has a powerful way of connecting us to our memories. Express Emotions: Add songs that express your emotions, whether it's joy, sadness, love, or even anger. Music has a way of articulating what we sometimes find hard to express ourselves. Update Regularly: Life keeps changing, and so should your playlist. Add new songs that resonate with your current experiences and feelings. Now, why is this important? Well, music is a universal language that can evoke deep emotions and memories. Creating a playlist about your life is like creating a musical time capsule. It helps you relive moments, reflect on your journey, and appreciate how far you've come. Plus, it can be a fantastic conversation starter and a way to share your story with others. It's a celebration of you, in musical form! π΅π and - uh - is there a playlist? You bet your ASS there is: well...what thoughts do you have on this week's show? Let us know!!!!

The Top Five Albums We Know By Heart - Song for Song, Word for Word, In Succession
Ah, the magic of music, right? Music enthusiasts have this incredible ability to connect deeply with certain albums because these albums often resonate with their emotions, experiences, or even the phase of life they're going through. It's like finding a musical soulmate! Certain albums become timeless classics because they capture universal themes or emotions, making listeners feel understood and validated. Whether it's the lyrics that speak to the listener's heart or the melodies that evoke powerful emotions, these albums become like old friends, always there to comfort, inspire, or energize. And when it comes to learning song lyrics, it's fascinating how our brains work. Music has a way of embedding itself into our memory, aided by catchy tunes and repetitive patterns. The combination of rhythm and melody forms a sort of mnemonic device, making it easier for us to recall lyrics effortlessly. Plus, when we enjoy a song, we tend to listen to it repeatedly, reinforcing those lyrics in our minds. It's almost like a fun, musical form of memory training! So, our favorite albums become a part of us, and reciting the lyrics becomes second nature, just like reciting lines from a beloved movie or quoting lines from a favorite book. It's all about that emotional connection and the magic of music! πΆβ¨ And - yes - there's a playlist!!! The Country Music Series: Our Top Five Male/Female Duets
SPOILER ALERT: Yes, absolutely, someone DID put "Islands on the Stream" on their Top Five List. Now we can all relax. This is the second-to-last (I think) episode in our Country Music Series, and we do hope y'all have enjoyed these. At the very least, you might have heard a new(er) country song that you hadn't heard before or even discovered an artist that you think you kind of like now. I know that for sure happened to me - Annie and I have some very different tastes in this arena, although we DID have a bit of overlap. If you're thinking that country music duets have been around forever, you are absolutely right! Male and female country artists began recording duets together as early as the 1930s. Artists like Jimmie Davis and Kate Smith recorded "Beautiful Texas" in 1933, setting a precedent for cross-gender duets in country music. This practice became more common in the following decades with various artists collaborating on duets. The Country Music Association (CMA) began awarding the Vocal Event of the Year category in 1988. This category recognizes special collaborations or featured performances in country music. While many of the winners are duets, not all of them are exclusively male/female duets. The category has included a variety of collaborations, which can involve multiple artists or groups coming together for a single performance. The first winner of the CMA Award for Vocal Event of the Year in 1988 was the song "Streets of Bakersfield," a duet by Dwight Yoakam and Buck Owens. And, uh....DUH. Enjoy!

This episode was fun, but it wasn't as easy as you might think! You know already that Annie and I are a bit "koo-koo" over cover songs. We have our very favorites and we have ideas of cover songs we would like to see created someday...but we also have some that we completely and unapologetically despise and we plan to tell you about that in today's episode. Remember, a good cover song often adds a unique twist or interpretation to the original, showcasing the artist's individuality while maintaining respect for the source material. It should evoke emotions and offer something fresh to listeners. A bad cover might lack originality, feel forced, or fail to capture the essence of the original. Ultimately, it's about striking a balance between homage and innovation. Some notoriously awful cover songs include William Shatner's rendition of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds," Limp Bizkit's version of "Behind Blue Eyes," and Madonna's take on "American Pie." These covers often received criticism for deviating too far from the original's charm or not adding anything valuable to the song. However, opinions on cover songs can be subjective, and what one person dislikes, another might enjoy. For example, I actually liked the Madonna cover of American Pie, but I do appreciate why others detest it. For me, it brings back memories of Karaoke Night in the Chicago Suburbs back in the early 2000's. And, yes, - but you're not getting the shitty cover songs...you're getting the originals because they were JUST FINE...some were even perfect. So enjoy those instead of having to listen to the crap that we are fussing about in this episode. ENJOY!

The Country Music Series: Our Top Five Favorite Tunes from the New Millenium

The Country Music Series: Our Top Five Favorite Tunes from the New Millenium
Maybe it's because both Annie and me didn't really get into country music until our adult years - and in both cases, that was around the late '90s and early 2000s - but we still feel compelled to continue the country music series AND the concept of our favorite "whatever" in The New Millenium...but that is the theme for today's Country Music Series Episode. Although Annie and I didn't just stumble on country music. There are, indeed, a wealth of factors that brought country music into mainstream musical/pop culture: Crossover Success Country artists like Shania Twain and Faith Hill gained widespread popularity by crossing over into mainstream pop music, attracting a larger and more diverse audience. Bro-Country The emergence of the "bro-country" subgenre, characterized by party-themed lyrics and a fusion of country and rock elements, led by artists such as Luke Bryan and Florida Georgia Line, contributed to a new wave of listeners embracing country music. Digital and Online Platforms The rise of digital platforms and online streaming allowed country music to reach a global audience more easily, breaking down geographical barriers and fostering the growth of new artists and fan communities. And then there's the Country Concert Experience: Country music concerts provided fans with an opportunity to experience their favorite artists and songs in a live setting. The energetic performances and interactions between artists and fans helped create a strong sense of community and connection. Many country artists embarked on extensive tours during the 2000s, often collaborating with other artists for joint tours or music festivals. These tours not only showcased the individual talents of artists but also exposed audiences to a variety of country music styles. The 2000s saw the rise of country music festivals, such as the CMA Music Festival and Stagecoach Festival. These events brought together a diverse lineup of country artists and attracted attendees from all over the country, contributing to the genre's visibility and popularity. Successful country music tours and concerts served as effective marketing tools for artists and their albums. They helped boost album sales, increase radio airplay, and elevate the overall profile of country music. and, of course, the Apple Music Playlist can be found ENJOY!!!!

Our Top Five Favorite Character ACTRESSES - Let's Hear it for the Ladies!

Our Top Five Favorite Character ACTRESSES - Let's Hear it for the Ladies!
Welcome back!! We wouldn't be doing our due diligence if we didn't give the ladies a chance to be featured for that whole Character Actor thing. We talked about our favorite five fellas a couple of weeks ago, now we'll dish about the ladies! To be clear, what makes someone a "Character Actress?" A 'character actress' typically refers to an actress who specializes in playing distinctive, unique, and often supporting roles that are memorable due to their personality, appearance, or quirks. These roles often deviate from conventional leading or romantic roles and require the ability to portray a wide range of characters. Character actresses are known for their versatility, transformative performances, and ability to bring depth to supporting roles, adding richness to the storytelling. We also somewhat operated under the same "code" from the Character Actor episode, which basically identified these rules, as previously posted on New York Magazine's site: βΌ The Jenkins Rule: If a performer has been nominated for an Oscar, that performer is ineligible. βΌ The Dowd-Martindale Rule: If a performer has won a lead or supporting actor Emmy, that performer is ineligible. (Winners of an Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor are permitted.) βΌ The Hahn Rule: If a performer currently works primarily as a lead, that performer is ineligible. OH NO! Spoiler Alert!!!! Does anyone with the last name Hahn or Martindale factor into today's episode? I guess you'll have to listen and see!!

The Country Music Series: Our Top Five Favorite DRINKIN' Songs
I am quite surprised that it took us more than a year to get down with Country Music, but I'm really glad that we have, AND that we're starting this special "mini-series" with our favorite Drinkin' Songs. Annie and I both went to high school in rural Arkansas, and the first thing we ever learned about country music (having just moved from Chicago) was that there were three subjects covered: My Truck, My Momma (or My Grandma), and My Beer, or whatever other liquor you had around. Now that's about as simplistic as country music can get but shoot...who doesn't love a country song about drinkin'? Country Music Duets and our favorite tunes in the 2000's are coming next - and if you have any suggestions for country music Top Five LIsts, just shoot us an email: And you are seriously a big old fool if you don't fall in LOVE with this playlist! it's pretty freaking epic if I do say so myself! Check it out

Our Top Five Selection of Movies Which TOTALLY Deserve a Sequel!
yes, of course, "hey, Hollywood, let's give you ten more movies that require a sequel!" Said no one EVER. Except that Annie and I are saying it now - and we really, really mean it! Seriously - you know there have been movies you've seen in the theaters - or even movies that you've been watching for two or more decades and you always say, "dang, I really want to know what happens to so-and-so after this-and-that happens!" and, as you can imagine, Annie and I have some pretty strong opinions about that! So this show features a total of 11 films - yes, we had one overlap - that we'd like to request a sequel. There's so much more to tell in these stories, and we want it done! Now. Or just as soon as these various filmmakers can get around to it. We'd LOVE to hear your thoughts about this list! Are we nuts? Or do you agree with our choices? Either way, shoot us an email: [email protected]

Our Top Five Favorite Cover Tunes From the "New Millenium."

Our Top Five Favorite Cover Tunes From the "New Millenium."
Welcome back to another fun show! Sorry that we've sort of been hit-and-miss since Annie returned from Europe. Working this whole 4/10 schedule usually means I'm home by 6 pm and that's a little late for my Central-Time Co-Host Sibling to get started recording. But don't you worry - the 4/10's will be ending SOON! Meanwhile, you're going to hear Annie and I talk alot about "New Millenium" things in the next few episodes. Yeah, we know - that was, like, 23 years ago...but the good news about that is there was incredibly good music being cranked out during those early years. The early 2000's were my years living in Chicago, Arizona, and Nashville all before moving to California - I hosted a karaoke show in Chicago, discovered country music in Arizona, and you can bet your ass that I loaded up on a TON of musical influences during my 18 months living in Nashville. Regardless - as Annie and I were kicking up new show ideas, this whole "Our Fave Cover Songs of The New Millenium" seemed an obvious choice and I do hope that you'll enjoy our selections. And is there a playlist? OMG - you're darn tootin' there is! You can find that bad boy ALTHOUGH - there are three of our songs that you can't find on Apple Music (BIG TIME SAD FACE). But not to worry - we have links to them here! ENJOY!!!

Our Top Five Favorite Male Character Actors

Our Top Five Favorite Male Character Actors
Happy Belated Independence Day, or as I like to say, "Happy Birthday to My Favorite Sibling Co-Host!" Yes, that's right, our own Annie Pruitt was Born on the 4th of July and we still totally let her think that the fireworks are all for her! We had a couple of weeks off, ish, while Annie was in Europe with her family, but we have a HUGE new list of amazing topics coming down the pike soon, AND I promise that Doug Ferguson and Heather Zeitzwolfe will be back as well. So - this character actor thing...Annie and I both approached our research a little differently and found some "rules" on what qualifies as a character actor role. A fairly standard definition, like this one from , states, "A character actor is a film or television performer who specializes in portraying unique, offbeat, colorful characters in supporting roles. The term can be applied to actors who excel in one specific type of character or those who transform themselves for each role and take on a wide range of character types." However, I found myself trying desperately to stay within the lines of these particular rules, as stated on New York Magazine's site: βΌ The Jenkins Rule: If a performer has been nominated for an Oscar, that performer is ineligible. βΌ The Dowd-Martindale Rule: If a performer has won a lead or supporting actor Emmy, that performer is ineligible. (Winners of an Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor are permitted.) βΌ The Hahn Rule: If a performer currently works primarily as a lead, that performer is ineligible. Well, you will notice that Annie and I tried to yield to those "recommendations," and it's easier said than done, let me tell you. Our list primarily consists of contemporary actors who are still with us, but I do pull one very classic actor out of the mix for my list. and having said that, not only will we be bringing out a list of our Top Five Favorite Female Character Actors, but we'll be throwing out a few additional mixes because I'll be damned if we're going to have a character actor conversation which does not include Gary Oldman (come to think of it, he might even get his own show!). Anyway - enjoy!!

The Top Five Tunes Featuring Lyrics We Find Strange, Curious, or Interesting...
Song Lyrics... When I was in college, Bobby Brown's "Don't Be Cruel" album had just been released and I remember giggling with my friend Camille about the "RONI" song. We had turned "my heart belongs to tender Roni..." into "My heart, belongs to Macaroni." and it wasn't too much longer after that when author Gavin Edwards published If you know the book, you also know about the gems like "She's Like Fred Gwynn, in my dreams," and "There's a Bathroom on the Right" And not too much longer after THAT, there was even a But I digress. Who isn't fascinated with song lyrics? One thing I miss about albums and CDs is being able to open up the "album jacket" or "album notes" while listening to the songs and read along with the song lyrics. This is now I know about Lisa Loeb's, "I may not be a quaalude living in speed zone..." from WHEN ALL THE STARS WERE FALLING on the Tails album. And you can just listen to the episode to learn more about that. And it was actually something Annie said to me that made me consider this subject as an epiosde for this show, so you can thank her for the next time you email us about one or more of our lists. Just go to . Enjoy the episode!!
