Episode 13 - When Your Old Life Calls...

Episode 13 - When Your Old Life Calls...
When your old life calls… I share about the my experiences of being in a "liminal space" between who I was and who I am becoming. Lessons... There is no "ending" to a healing journey. Emotional flashbacks - where sensations within your body or triggers in environment collapse time and we feel like we did back when the truama first occured. So we lose the sense of reality and who we are now. This is accompanied by the stories and beliefs of that time as well (intense shame, despair, hopelessness etc). My triggers still include certain places, people, or spaces. This can even go back as far as infancy where you could have absouletly no coginitive awareness of the trauma but the body remembers. Grounding in the present and providing assurance is crucial, I saw "This is my truama talking" and then do whatever I feel I need to do to take good care of myself in that moment to assure my body that I am indeed safe now. Euphoric Recall - common in both recovery from substances and also in trauma bonded relationships where you put on rose colored glasses and don't remember the destructive parts of the addiction or relationship. Sit with feelings - not identifying with the story (emotional intense sensations collapse time and make us feel like we are back in the old reality). It helps me to say "I feel scared" and observe the thoughts (that usually aren' even mine). No feeling lasts forever. It is safe to feel. "That identity is no longer me." "That no longer defines me." Songs can really transmute & transform our vibe! Do you have a playlist? "Can't change the past but compassionately witness the present." Episode 12 - Grief: with Erin Hollister, Director for Center for Grieving Children Program (Boys & Girls Club of Fox Valley)
I enlisted the help of my new friend, Erin Hollister - Director for Center of Grieving Children Program of the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Fox Valley to help me in continuing to process the grief of the end of my marriage. This was recorded in real time as I processed my ex-husband (of 22 years) entering a new marriage. "I help people find joy, even in their pain." - Erin H. Erin teaches us that... Grief is a natural response to loss it is an emotional/physical/cognitive/spiritual reaction to losing someone/something significant. Grief is not meant to be fixed, only witnessed. Grief is universal but also an individual process. Grief brings out our humanity, our realness, takes our masks off in real time. There is no linear process when it comes to grieving. Be a safe place for those who are grieving and yourself. All feelings are welcome. Grief can be very isolating, it is helpful to find support. Vulnerability found in grief is sacred. Validate/Acknowledge | Expression | Connection | Making Meaning | New Identity Book Recommendation: “Grief is simply love in its most wild and painful form, it is a natural and sane response to loss.” says Megan Devine. One of my favorite quotes: “My dear, In the midst of hate, I found there was, within me, an invincible love. In the midst of tears, I found there was, within me, an invincible smile. In the midst of chaos, I found there was, within me, an invincible calm. I realized, through it all, that… In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer. And that makes me happy. For it says that no matter how hard the world pushes against me, within me, there’s something stronger – something better, pushing right back. Episode 11 - Aftermath of Burnout…What now?
"Owning your story and loving yourself through it is the bravest thing you will ever do." -Brene Brown, The Gifts of Imperfection Jesse shares her story of burnout in it's totality; the good, the bad, & the ugly with courage and compassion. TW - suicidal ideation. Expecting a highly senstive person to function in this society is like telling a butterfly to go out in a hail storm. Alexithymia, which is not an inability to feel, but an inability to idenitfy, process, and describe one's own emotions. Individuals with alexithymia struggle to differentiate between physical sensations and emotions, and may have difficulty recognizing emotions in themselves and others. It is considered a personality trait, not a disorder on its own, but it frequently co-occurs with other conditions like autism spectrum disorder, depression, and brain injuries. NEW TOOL: "I feel...X..." Sensing and feeling for 90 seconds allows it to move through the body. JOMO - The Joy of Missing Out :) Healing is messy and uniquely ours~
