Pre-Competitive ECG Screening in the U.S.
Electrocardiogram (ECG) screening is required by all major professional sports leagues in the U.S. and is increasingly utilized in college athletes. While ECG screening can assist the early detection of cardiovascular disorders at elevated risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD), an effective ECG screening program requires a skilled physician infrastructure trained and capable of accurate ECG interpretation and the proper secondary testing of athletes with ECG abnormalities. This symposium, recorded at the 2019 ACSM Annual Meeting, examines the potential benefits and drawbacks of ECG screening in college and professional athletes, reviews the fundamental steps for successful implementation of an ECG screening program, explores other advanced non-invasive cardiac testing, and outlines the evaluation of ECG abnormalities and the management of competitive athletes diagnosed with a cardiovascular condition associated with SCD. Presenters: Jonathan Drezner, M.D., and Aaron Baggish, M.D., FACSM
