#139 - Hyper-Grace ... Hyper-Mean: The Rise of the Grace Pharisee
In Episode 139 of "Adventures in Grace," titled "Hyper-Grace, Hyper-Mean: The Rise of the Grace Pharisee," we delve into the unsettling trend of hostility within the hyper-grace movement. Despite its foundation in the liberating message of grace, recent personal attacks by key figures, including a publisher, reveal a disconcerting shift toward exclusivity and condemnation reminiscent of the Pharisees' behavior that Jesus confronted. Our host shares personal experiences of being on the receiving end of such attacks, highlighting the irony of grace advocates displaying ungracious behavior. This episode challenges the notion of spirituality and how it's demonstrated in our treatment of others, especially those who oppose or annoy us. It contrasts the loving and inclusive approach of Jesus with the judgmental and elitist attitude of the Pharisees, prompting a reflection on what true grace looks like in action. The discussion extends to the broader community of grace preachers and warns of the potential pitfalls of aligning with those who may preach grace but exhibit mean-spiritedness. Listeners are guided through a thoughtful examination of influential figures in the modern grace movement, drawing attention to those who embody the genuine spirit of grace, like Malcolm Smith, Paul Young, Brad Jersak, Father Aidan Kimmel, and Tom Wright. The episode encourages support for these ministers while advising caution elsewhere, particularly with certain grace ministers and publishing companies. Tune into "Hyper-Grace, Hyper-Mean: The Rise of the Grace Pharisee" for a compelling discussion on the true essence of grace, the importance of authentic spiritual encounters over mere teachings, and the recognition of those who truly walk in grace's path. #134 - Classic Christianity by Bob George (Chp 12 - Freedom in Dependency)
10/28/2023
#134 - Classic Christianity by Bob George (Chp 12 - Freedom in Dependency)
Podcast Notes: Freedom in Dependency George's Story: George, blind due to diabetes, struggled emotionally, feeling rejected by God. He was taught that faith's size determines God's response to prayers. His church emphasized faith as a means to healing, blaming individuals for their ailments. George internalized this, believing God hated him for his "little faith." Misconceptions of Faith: Faith is Not a Feeling: Emotional responses in religious settings are not faith. Faith is Not Intellectual Agreement: Knowing doctrine doesn't equate to faith. Faith is Not a Power to Manipulate God: Presumption, not faith, tries to control God. True Nature of Faith: Faith's value lies in its object, not in itself. Faith involves dependency and action based on belief. The size of faith isn't crucial; the will of God and responding to His word is. Jesus: The Perfect Example of Faith: Jesus lived as the perfect man, dependent on the Father. His miracles were God's work through Him. He demonstrated total dependency and obedience. Living by Faith: Faith involves love for God, resulting in dependency and obedience. True obedience stems from love and dependency, not just adherence to rules. Dependency is expressed through surrender and renewal of the mind. The Role of Thankfulness: Surrendering personal rights is essential for a thankful spirit. Thankfulness is a concrete expression of faith in God's goodness. It leads to peace and freedom, even in adversity. George's Transformation: George found peace by surrendering to God and being thankful. His last 18 months were fulfilling, demonstrating the power of true faith. Conclusion: Faith is about dependency on God, not about controlling outcomes. True faith leads to freedom, peace, and a fulfilling relationship with God.

10/20/2023
#133 - Classic Christianity by Bob George (Chp 11 - Living By a Higher Law
Understanding Legalism in Christian Life: Legalism often refers to imposing extra conditions for salvation or Christian living, beyond what's taught in the Bible. It's not about the actions (e.g., Bible study, witnessing) but the motive behind them. Legalism involves doing these actions out of a sense of obligation or to earn God's acceptance, rather than out of love and gratitude. Motivation and Source of Life: Actions can be identical, but the motive determines if it's legalism or genuine faith. Legalism is self-driven and about outward performance; genuine faith is about Christ living within and guiding actions. The analogy: Two people can perform the same action (like tapping to music), but one responds naturally to hearing music (genuine faith), while the other only imitates the actions without hearing (legalism). Living by the Spirit: Being filled with the Spirit isn't about a mystical experience but understanding and accepting God's love and grace. It's about letting this understanding of God's love control your actions and attitudes, much like being drunk with wine influences behavior. Experiencing God's Love: Understanding God's love is transformative; it changes how you view yourself and others. It's not about following rules but responding to the "music" of God's love and grace. This love is patient, kind, not self-seeking, keeps no record of wrongs, and always perseveres (referencing 1 Corinthians 13). Practical Implications: Understanding God's love affects every area of life, especially relationships. Misunderstanding God's love leads to problems in personal and family life. We treat others the way we perceive God treats us. If we see God as harsh and demanding, we'll likely treat others the same way. The Power of the Holy Spirit: The Holy Spirit empowers believers not just for supernatural acts, but more so to comprehend and accept the profound depths of God's love. This understanding is what fills believers with the fullness of God (referencing Ephesians 3:14-21). Love in Action: God's love isn't abstract; it's meant to be lived out in relationships. Real-life example: Bob George's realization of how he was hurting his relationship with his son over something trivial (the cost of a deluxe cheeseburger) and his decision to prioritize love and relationship over frugality. The Higher Law of Christ: Christians are not without standards after being freed from the law; they're under the "law of Christ" or "law of liberty," which is a higher standard. This law is about serving one another in love, which fulfills the entire law (referencing Galatians 5:13-14 and Romans 13:10). Love is the defining mark of Jesus' disciples, and it's possible only when believers first receive and are filled with God's love (referencing John 13:34-35).

#131 - Classic Christianity by Bob George (Chp 10 - Free from the Yoke of Slavery)
FREE FROM THE YOKE OF SLAVERY Misconception Addressed: Preaching God's love and acceptance might give people a license to sin. Paul's Letters to the Romans: Emphasizes that understanding God's love and grace makes sinning under grace seem absurd. Illustrations: Highlights the irrationality of returning to sin when presented with God's abundant love. Christian World's Obsession with Sin: Criticizes the focus on sin rather than knowing Christ. The goal of the Christian life is to know Christ, not just to avoid sin. Arguments Against Legalism: The law can expose sin but can't provide a solution. Law's limitations: Incites sin. Deals only with external actions. Involves human effort. Cannot change the heart. Conclusion: Importance of standing firm in grace. Avoid falling back into legalism. Embrace the abundant life offered by Jesus Christ. The overarching message is that Christians should focus on the abundant love and grace of Jesus Christ rather than getting entangled in legalistic views and practices.

#130 - Classic Christianity by Bob George (Chp 9 - The Ministry of Condemnation)
09/29/2023
#130 - Classic Christianity by Bob George (Chp 9 - The Ministry of Condemnation)
Here is a summary of this chapter: 1. The Standard of Perfection The law demands perfection, and even a single failure results in being guilty of breaking the entire law. Summary: The text references James 2:10, emphasizing that if one stumbles at just one point of the law, they are guilty of breaking all of it. This sets an incredibly high standard, which is perfection throughout one's entire life. 2. The Curse of the Law Relying on observing the law results in a curse, as the law's standard is total perfection. Summary: Paul, in Galatians 3:10, states that those who rely on the law are under a curse. This curse arises not because the law is flawed, but because humans cannot meet its perfect standards. Jesus further magnifies the law's demands, emphasizing its spirit and meaning. 3. Law vs. Grace The law requires man to make himself acceptable to God through works, while grace offers acceptance as a gift through Jesus Christ. Summary: Under the law, acceptance is based on actions, often identified by the condition "if." In contrast, under grace, acceptance is a gift given through faith in Jesus Christ. Ephesians 2:8-9 emphasizes salvation by grace through faith, not by works. 4. The Old vs. the New Covenant The Old Covenant, or the law, had specific conditions for acceptance, while the New Covenant offers a relationship based on grace. Summary: The early church recognized the distinction between the Old and New Covenants. The Old Covenant was based on laws and conditions, while the New Covenant emphasizes a relationship with God based on grace and faith in Jesus Christ. 5. The True Purpose of the Law The law was never meant to make a person right with God but to make sin (independent living) more apparent. Summary: The law acts as a mirror, showing imperfections but not providing a solution. It sets a standard of perfection, and any deviation results in judgment. The law makes individuals conscious of their sins but doesn't offer redemption. In essence, the chapter delves into the differences between the law and grace, emphasizing the challenges of living under the law's demands and the freedom offered by grace through Jesus Christ. The recurring theme is the transformative power of understanding one's relationship with God under the New Covenant, which is rooted in grace and faith.

Safety from Wrath Believers are shielded from the wrath we have created in our independent living due to the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, ensuring they are seen as righteous in God's eyes. #128 - Classic Christianity by Bob George (Chp 7 - Loved and Accepted)
Here is a summary of this chapter: 1. Love vs. Acceptance The distinction between love and acceptance is explored through a personal story involving the author and his son, Bobby. While love is often assured, acceptance can be more elusive. Summary: Bobby, after struggling to find a job post-college, expresses to his father that while he always felt loved, he wasn't sure if he was accepted, especially in terms of his career choices. This highlights the profound difference between feeling loved and feeling genuinely accepted for who one is. 2. Righteousness in Christ The concept of righteousness and acceptance in the eyes of God is discussed, emphasizing that true Christians are as righteous as Jesus Christ. This bold statement underscores the transformative power of faith and the depth of God's acceptance. 3. The Power of Unconditional Love Christianity uniquely offers the message of God's unconditional love and acceptance, contrasting with other religions that often focus on appeasing deities. This powerful message has the potential to change lives. 4. Jean's Encounter with God's Love A story of a woman named Jean illustrates the transformative power of God's love and acceptance. Summary: Jean, who struggled with depression and multiple suicide attempts, finds solace and transformation after attending a home Bible study. Her journey underscores the healing and redemptive power of understanding God's unconditional love and acceptance. 5. The Impact of Conditional vs. Unconditional Acceptance The text delves into the destructive force of conditional love and acceptance, contrasting it with the life-changing power of unconditional love. Summary: Conditional love and acceptance can lead to feelings of inadequacy and despair. In contrast, understanding and experiencing God's unconditional love and acceptance can bring about profound positive change in an individual's life. In essence, this chapter emphasizes the transformative power of understanding one's unconditional acceptance in the eyes of God. #127 - Classic Christianity by Bob George (Chp 6 - Toward a Proper Self-Image)
1. It's a Matter of Relationship: The foundation of our self-image should be built on our relationship with God. Our worth isn't determined by achievements or possessions, but by God's unconditional love. Deep understanding of this relationship can significantly transform our self-perception. 2. Looking in the Wrong Places: Many seek validation in wealth, popularity, or achievements. These external validations are fleeting and don’t provide lasting contentment. True contentment and self-worth come from understanding our intrinsic value in God's eyes. 3. Trapped by Labels: Society often labels individuals based on appearances, backgrounds, or mistakes. These labels can confine us, limiting our understanding of our true potential. By breaking free from these worldly labels, we recognize our true identity in Christ. 4. Focused on Failure: Obsessing over past mistakes can warp our self-image. God's grace means we're forgiven, and He doesn’t view us through the lens of our failures. Recognizing this allows us to move forward with confidence and hope. 5. The Two Kinds of Human Beings: There are those who are still searching for their purpose and identity in worldly things. And those who have found their identity in Christ and live from that understanding. Recognizing which category we fall into helps guide our journey and growth. 6. Total Identification: It's crucial to totally identify with Christ to realize our true worth. This means seeing ourselves as God sees us – redeemed, cherished, and with a purpose. This identification eradicates worldly misconceptions and empowers us. 7. What Will You Do with the New You?: Understanding our worth in Christ gives birth to a 'new' individual, free from past misconceptions. This new identity calls for a life in alignment with God’s purpose and values. It's an invitation to embrace this new self, to live with purpose, love, and true fulfillment.

#125 - Classic Christianity by Bob George (Chp 4 - Forgiven to be Filled)
God's Forgiveness and the Power of Christ's Resurrection Edward's Struggle: The chapter opens with a story about Edward, a man deeply rooted in his faith but tormented by a past sin. Despite believing in Christ, he can't accept God's forgiveness, symbolizing the internal battles many Christians face. Bondage of Past Mistakes: Many believers are trapped by past errors, preventing them from fully experiencing Christ's indwelling life. This bondage hinders spiritual growth and maturity. Key Quote: "Until you rest in the finality of the cross, you will never experience the reality of the resurrection." 2 Peter 1:3-9 Insights: This passage emphasizes that everything needed for a spiritual life is already provided in Christ. Yet, many Christians search for something "deeper," not realizing that true spiritual depth is about discovering more within Christ. Key Quote: "Christian maturity is...discovering more and more of what we already have in Him." Old vs. New Testament Forgiveness: Old Testament: Introduced the concept of atonement, which means a covering. Sacrifices covered sins but didn't remove them. New Testament: Focuses on Christ's sacrifice, which removes sins once and for all. It contrasts the repetitive nature of Old Testament sacrifices with the finality of Christ's sacrifice. Key Quote: "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!" (John 1:29). Present Reality of Forgiveness: The chapter underscores that forgiveness isn't just about future salvation but is a present reality. This understanding allows believers to walk daily with a God who loves and accepts them, free from the shackles of past mistakes. The chapter provides a profound exploration of forgiveness, emphasizing the need for believers to recognize and embrace the complete forgiveness offered through Christ's sacrifice.

Chapter 3 of "Classic Christianity" by George Bob is titled "Man Alive! The Neglected Half of the Gospel." The chapter emphasizes a crucial but often overlooked aspect of the gospel message. It highlights that Christianity is not only about salvation and forgiveness, but also about the restoration of humanity's true identity and purpose. The author argues that a significant portion of Christianity's transformative power lies in recognizing the inherent value of humanity and our role as God's beloved creation. Through biblical references and theological insights, the chapter explores how the gospel brings renewal to every aspect of human existence—spiritually, emotionally, and physically. It urges readers to move beyond a narrow focus on sin and redemption and embrace the holistic message of the gospel that leads to a flourishing life. The neglected half of the gospel, according to the author, involves understanding our God-given potential, our unique gifts, and our responsibility to steward the world around us. In essence, the chapter advocates for a comprehensive understanding of Christianity that encompasses both the forgiveness of sins and the revitalization of human purpose, resulting in a deeper and more fulfilling relationship with God.
