Ep. 606: Racing the Tour Divide in Your 60's - Marty Johnson
When Marty's 60th birthday came rolling around, he knew he needed to do something adventurous that took him out of his normal routine and into an entirely different frame of mind. From that longing came the idea to race in the Tour Divide, a 2,750-mile, mostly off-road, mountain bike race from Canada to Mexico along the Continental Divide. Now, at the age of 65, Marty is gearing up this June for another TD attempt. His 6th time on the trail. Our most adventurous years don't have to be the earliest. In fact, they can be the most recent. I hope Marty's story helps you see your own adventure in 2020. Instagram: Photo: Try CS Instant Coffee for 50% off your first order for the months of September and October only! Ep. 604: Chasing Fastest Known Times - Jason Hardrath
After a serious car accident that left him with limited mobility in his leg, Jason decided he was done letting time slip by that wasn't in the pursuit of some higher goal in places he loved to be. This led him to pursue wilderness-based FKTs (Fastest Known Times). To date, Jason has 35 FKTs in some of the most iconic and beautiful places in the American West. Many of those FKTs are on impressively difficult routes. The Cascade Trifecta, Rainier Infinity Loop, Crater Lake Circumnavigation, and Oregon's Five Highest are all FKT's Jason has under his belt. Not bad for an elementary PE teacher having this level of adventures on school breaks and weekends. Just imagine what you can do if you started trying. Thomas recently became an empty nester and decided a grand adventure was what he needed. He got together with Churchill Clark, the great-great-great-great grandson of Captain William Clark of the Lewis and Clark Expedition to build a dugout canoe named Bella from a 20 foot Douglas Fir. He traced his path along the Missouri River all the way to the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, a 5-month expedition along the same route Lewis and Clark took when returning to the East Coast. This epic tale includes everything from puppies, bow fishing, and flooded rivers, to quaint towns, and peaceful moments of solitude. A book about the experience will be released in March of 2020. Ep. 589: Life Lessons from an Outward Bound Instructor - Mark Michaux Brown
Every lesson that needs to be learned in life can be taught by nature. When we get out there we have time to breathe, to think, and to reflect on the beauty before us. It teaches us so much. No one knows that better than life-long Outward Bound promotor, Mark Brown. His life journey has taken many turns and his connection with the outdoors has fueled that life of adventure. After spending his entire career in Outward Bound, he recently published a book titled Outward Bound Lessons to Live a Life of Leadership that interviews some of Outward Bound’s most prominent alumni. They include Luis Benitez, one of the foremost mountaineers in the world, former US Senator Mark Udall, The Home Depot co-founder and current Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank, and Kohler Co. VP Laura Kohler. The book identifies the impact of Outward Bound in the world as told through the stories of former instructors and participants who have gone on to make a difference in the world. The lessons focus on what was learned in the wilderness and how it applies to being a powerful, positive leader in any setting. Ep. 584: The First American Cycling Team in Europe - Bill Humphreys
In 1973 Raleigh Bicycles took a bold step by inviting an American four-rider team to compete in the 8 day, 750-mile Tour of Ireland. This was unprecedented as no American team had ever raced in such a prestigious European bike event. And no one gave them a chance. However, the Raleigh team was young and excited and came out with some impressive firsts. Team member John Howard won a stage and finished 3rd overall, another finished 5th and Bill Humphreys was 3rd in a stage and was awarded the “Most Aggressive Rider” for that day. Phil Liggett, the commaisare of the race was so impressed that he and invited the team (on the spot) to compete in his prestigious Milk Race the following year. From that year forward, cycling would change forever as an entire new continent of talent and skill would participant and make its mark on European cycling. The Raleigh Team will be rejoining next summer to relive the glory of the experience at the Tour of Ireland reunion. Bill will be showing a 25-minute film of the race and a quick slideshow of the Tour of Ireland Reunion held this past summer at the Philly Bike Expo on November 2, 2019. Ep. 583: 75 Years Young and Still Adventuring Around the World - Lin Pardey
When Lin was tired of the “college-types” that she was always surrounded by, she decided to get to know a couple of sailors as an outlet from the mundaneness of campus life. She quickly fell in love with one of the guys, Larry, who was completely different from the folks she spent her days in class with. Lin was eager to learn so he began to teach her how to sail. Once she was comfortable on the water they began helping other folks deliver their boats around the area and they also began building their own. Not long after, the idea to live full-time on the 29-foot sailing vessel was born. Fast forward 47 years, 210,000 miles, and 77 countries later and we have Lin now sailing around the world on her own and having written dozens of books about her and Larry’s epic life. Lin has a lot to teach us in today’s episode and I encourage you to check out her many books. Try CS Instant Coffee for 50% off your first order for the months of September and October only! Ep. 581: Kayaking the Amazon from Source to Sea - West Hansen
West was born and raised in Texas and found his love of water at an early age. He was heavily involved in the water sports scene in Austin for years, organizing cleanups, races, etc. However, it wasn’t until his first trip out of the county, at the age of 46, that West decided to pursue an enormous expedition, paddle the entire length of the Amazon River. This led West to organize The 2012 National Geographic Amazon Express Expedition, which was his first expedition. It started at the newly discovered/confirmed source of the Amazon, which added almost 100 miles to the river and after 111 days, they made it to the Atlantic Ocean, 75 miles east of Belem, Brazil. West is also the first to kayak Europe's longest river 2200 mile Volga River in Russia. In 2020 he and his group will be the first to kayak the entire Northwest Passage - 1,900 miles across the Canadian Arctic Archipelago with the “Arctic Cowboys”.
