God is Love - Episode 21-19, May 3, 2021
If you listen to much of the news or social media, you find the divide across the nation just grows deeper. We have a tendency to hear only what we want to hear or at least what the marketing algorithms think we want to hear and stay as biased as ever. What are Christians to do when the world around us keeps boiling in this cauldron of hatred? We do what John tells us in his letters. "We love because God loved us first." And with that in mind, we "love God and love each other!" (1 John 4:19,21)

At the Name of Jesus - Episode 21-17, April 19, 2021
We like the stories from the Bible, the heroes, and miracles, but it's what's behind the stories that we need to pay attention to. God's message to us about how he wants to renew creation and how he wants to use us to help him do it is the real story within the story. God came as a human to show us how to live as the humans he meant us to become. Now he is recreating the heavens and the earth with death defeated on the cross. We can be a part of that renewal process when we follow him.

Just Believe - Episode 21-16, April 12, 2021
Why is it so hard to believe in the resurrection? We believe the stars are like our sun. We believe we have the same internal organs as everyone else even though we haven't seen them. We believe what climbers tell us about Mt Everest. We even believe the Internet. We have no personal knowledge of any of those things, only the testimony of a few witnesses. Why then can't we believe the testimony of the thousands upon thousands who testify of the life-transforming power of believing in the resurrected Christ?

He Has Risen - Episode 21-15, April 5, 2021
We should celebrate Easter more than just one day a year. We should even celebrate more than once a week on Sundays. Jesus is alive! He changed the world forever. His shed blood on the cross made a path for humanity and God to meet. We can meet with God because of Jesus, the human embodiment of God. And like the Israelite homes in Egypt, with blood on their doorposts, we do not need to fear death. It has no power over us. Our sins are passed over, we can worship God and reflect God as he designed.

The King Has Come - Episode 21-14, March 29, 2021
We miss the significance of Palm Sunday without understanding the rich history of God's covenants with the Israelites. If we don't understand how his promises fit into the Exodus, their exile, and the return of his people but not his glory to the Temple, we lose the importance of Jesus' triumphant entry on that first day of the week leading toward his crucifixion. It all begins at Bethphage, near Bethany, on the Mount of Olives, where Ezekiel saw the glory of God rest at his departure from the city.

The Hour Has Come - Episode 21-13, March 22, 2021
Jesus gave Phillip and Andrew a strange answer when they brought a request from Greeks who wanted to see him. Yes or no, or following the two of them to see the foreigners would be expected. Instead, Jesus tells of a grain of wheat dying to bring a harvest, losing life to gain it, and being lifted up from the ground. In hindsight, we understand his words, but they must have sounded mysterious and foreboding to the disciples and those around him as they approached this last Passover with Jesus.

Love Wins - Episode 21-12, March 15, 2021
When we put John 3:16 into the broader context of verses 14-21 and understand the vocation of the Israelites and Jesus' fulfillment of that vocation as the Son of Man and Son of God, we get a picture of God. God is not a cruel punisher, but a giver of love whose son finished the work we could not do as in reflecting his love in a world completely broken by sin. Jesus entered the world of darkness to defeat its forces once for all, and like the serpent in the wilderness, all who believe can have life.

Apologists use logic and scripture to get their point across about the existence of a unique personal God. In the past, apologists argued to save Christians' lives with false charges ranging from arson to incest to cannibalism. Whether an apologist or just an everyday Christian, we have a responsibility to share the reality of God, or the rocks and hills will cry out his praise. I don't want to be guilty of missing the opportunity and being dumber than a rock when it comes to praising him, do you?

God's Covenants - Episode 21-10, March 1, 2021
Lent is a great time to consider the covenants God made with us. As you look through the Old Testament at covenants he made with Adam, Noah, Abraham, David, Solomon, and others, you find he does all the work. The only thing he asks of us is obedience, and Jesus summed up the command to obey God's commands into two simple - but sometimes not so easy - rules. Love God, and love others. Take some time during this season of Lent to ponder the wonder of God's covenant with us as he gave himself on the cross.

In God We Trust - Episode 21-09, February 22, 2021
Since 1837, at least some of our coins have had "In God We Trust" engraved on their surface. The Coinage Act of 1873 put the phrase on all our coins, and in 1956, when the phrase became our national motto, it found its way to all our money. It's important to remember our trust is in him, not money, every time we pay for something. Material things never last. Rather, God remains the permanent source of our strength, particularly in the times in which we live today.

The Gospel Is Veiled - Episode 21-08, February 15, 2021
How can so many not understand their behavior contradicts principles of good community living? Paul explains it in 2 Corinthians 4. Satan veils the truth from those who fail to exercise faith in Jesus, Messiah, in the same way he veiled the truth from Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Until we put our trust in Jesus, we will fall prey to the exploits of our adversary. But by allowing God's spirit to help us understand scripture through careful reading and study, we can learn what he desires of us.

We whine and complain a lot. Glance at any social media outlet for a few minutes and you'll see what I mean. Israel did the same and God had something to say about it through his prophet Isaiah. God knows what goes on around us, but for those that follow him, he says he will give them the strength to rise up on eagles' wings, to run without growing weary, and to walk without growing tired. We might not see it on this sight of eternity, but God's promise still holds true. We who belong to his kingdom, know.

We think we know what someone else thinks or feels, but do we? How often do we think the other person misunderstands us? If our communications seem mysterious to someone else, perhaps, the same holds true for us. The Bible also holds mysterious verses and thoughts that contradict our Western thought. In Ancient Israel and the early church, their culture gave them a very different perspective than we have today. Multiple gods and celestial beings in charge of their lives was a reality. Did we miss something?

Learn from Jonah - Episode 21-5, January 25, 2021
The church can learn from Jonah a lot about how not to do things. He tried to run from the mission God gave him. I think he took a little joy from telling the people of Nineveh God would destroy them in forty days. Then he got angry when God accepted their repentance and forgave them. We act that way too often instead of sharing the message of hope and salvation to those who wrong us and need God so desperately.

Some today say we are enlightened. I'm not so sure based on what we see in the news and social media. I think we regressed rather than progressed in our thinking. Our biggest problem comes from leaving God out of the equation. The same thing happened to the Israelites time and again. We read about it in Samuel as God stopped talking to people and stopped visiting them in dreams. Maybe, like us, they let the world's noise and busyness drown out his voice. If we're not careful, we will do the same.

Jesus' Baptism - Episode 21-03, January 11, 2011
It wasn't until 1955 that the Baptism of Our Lord became a separate commemoration, and not until 1969 did it find its way to the church calendar as it is today. Until then, the church celebrated it as part of Epiphany. Though, Jesus' baptism marked an important milestone in his life and important to mark the beginning of his ministry and public revelation as Messiah. The linkage of his baptism's events linked Jesus to both the Angel of God in the Exodus and David's throne, points we often miss today.

This week we celebrate Epiphany, the revelation of Jesus Messiah to the Magi and Gentile world. But the celebration goes beyond that. It reminds us God wants to restore our relationship with him and lift the curse from the Garden of Eden. He wants to renew heaven and earth and give us back the commission he gave us at creation - to care for his creation. He wants us to become part of his family and enjoy the fellowship he prepared for us from the beginning. Epiphany, the revelation of the Son of God to us.

We are all glad to get out of 2020, but will 2021 be any better? The pandemic will still be here for six months or longer. It will take that long to get enough people immunized to establish herd immunity in this country. If we social distance, the economy will suffer for it. The government can't stop either of these because bailing us out only prolongs the problem as the dollar's value deflates and our debt inflates. The only solution is God. Get close to him in 2021. He will give you hope and strength.

Advent has been around since the 4th or 5th century, The Advent wreath was first seen in the early 1800s. Many keep the tradition of the Advent wreath in their homes and churches today as a reminder of Jesus' return. This week we light the Shepherd's Candle of Joy. With all the unrest and uncertainty surrounding us, spreading joy to your neighbors might be the perfect Christmas gift. Paul tells us to always be joyful, prayerful, and thankful. Let's spread it around and make a difference where we live.

The second week of Advent means we still anticipate Jesus' coming. Just as the ancient Israelites looked for his coming, we can expect him to come again. Peter tells us his delay is for us that more might find salvation in him. It also means we have more time to do the work Jesus gave us to do - to spread the good news of his coming to rescue us from sin and that he is coming again. So, as we slow down a bit during the Advent season, stop and remember he will come again. Be ready!

It is also a time to look forward and remember Jesus, the Messiah, is coming again to take those who believe in him for salvation to live with him forever. Psalms 100 tells us to be thankful as we come to worship the God of creation. After all, he created us. We belong to him. And when we come to him with thanksgiving, the problems and worries of the day somehow slip away, if only for a while. Coming to God in thankful worship reminds us he is in charge. God will take care of his children, even in the middle of pandemics, economic crisis, and political upheaval. He is the King of kings and cares about his children. Remember, as you give thanks this week.

He puts governments and authorities in place to maintain order. We are commanded to obey those in authority whether we agree with their politics or not.

Jesus constantly preached the same message John preached. Repent, the kingdom of God is at hand. Added to that message, though, his disciples and many around him declared him as Messiah. For Herod, the priesthood, and Caesar, that meant one thing, their seats of power were at risk to the king of all nations. Are you ready to believe?

We can take three quick things from Paul's letter to the Philippians in the first few verses of chapter four. First, the Lord is near, right beside you. Second, our brain remembers everything that goes into it, so fill it with good things, things that bring praise to God. Finally, live in such a way that if others follow in your footsteps, they will find their way to Jesus because you follow so closely in his. Remember and act on those three things and you'll be amazed at what happens in your life.
