She questions the scope of femininity by capturing moments of rage, torture, complacency, joy, nostalgia, and desire. Ali is an expressionist with occasional abstract tendencies. Suzie Guillette is a writer and intuitive. On this episode she talks to us about growing up Catholic and how rosary beads continue to be an important spiritual talisman, even as her intuitive practices have expanded to include tarot, astrology, and the various clairsenses. We discuss how spirituality is both deeply personal and all-encompassing. And she opens up about how the profound loss of her cousin and Janie’s good friend, Karen Walsh, became a clarifying point in her intuitive journey. Suzie's work has appeared in Goop, Tin House, O Magazine, Catapult, Quartz, the Rumpus, and elsewhere. She is the author of Much to Your Chagrin: A Memoir of Embarrassment (Atria, 2009) and Battle Dress: What I Wore to Confront My Past, a longform essay about reckoning with decades-old sexual violence (Kindle Single, 2017). She conceived, produced, and performed in Moving for You: A Tribute to Empathy (2017), a short film directed, shot and edited by Austin Wideman, made in homage to a collection of others' stories of grief and loss. She is currently working on a memoir about self-trust, synchronicity and healing from trauma. Since childhood, Suzanne has been an empath and also receives intuitive messages via sight (clairvoyance), sound (clairaudience), and knowing (claircognizance). In her late 20s, she began consciously developing her intuitive gifts in myriad ways, including through the study of astrology and tarot. The tragic loss of a close loved one has had a big influence on her intuitive practice. Facing mortality made her acutely aware of the passage of time—how we relate to it, how we use what time we have—and one outcome of this awareness has been a driving need for authenticity. A near death drowning experience “woke” Chris from his productivity slumber two years into his journey in NY and he has been thriving and developing his sense of self ever since. Chris recently portrayed Paul Drake on HBO’s “Perry Mason” (now filming its second season) and can currently be seen in Ava Duvernay’s Netflix mini-series “Central Park Five.” Other acting credits include “Homeland,” “The Newsroom,” “Gotham,” “Complications,” “Underground,” “Detroit,” 12 Years a Slave, and Lila and Eve starring alongside Viola Davis and Jennifer Lopez. Some of Chalk’s theatrical credits include Roundabout’s The Overwhelming, Lincoln Center’s When I Come to Die, Manhattan Theatre Club’s Defiance, Lynn Nottage’s Pulitzer Prize winning Ruined and the Tony Award winning revival of Fences starring alongside Viola Davis and Denzel Washington, for which he was nominated for a Drama Desk Award and received a Theatre World Award. Deborah talks to us about her journey to astrology, from her training as a sculptor to her family’s complicated religious karma. We talk about how art can (and should) be a force for political good, along with how we can re-think about astrology as a practical tool for organizing our energies and attentions. Deborah Fisher is an artist, creative leader, and student of the divinatory arts who has been reading charts since 2016. Her astrology practice is a blend of ancient predictive techniques and modern psychological interpretation, and is meant to offer clients a practical, actionable narrative about responding productively to things beyond our control—our karma and fate. Deborah’s approach to astrology is so practical because it grows out of a lifetime focusing on public and socially engaged art, as both an artist and an administrator. She has been commissioned to create large scale public sculptures by Middlebury College and the city of Peekskill, NY, and is currently working as the founding Executive Director of A Blade of Grass, a nonprofit that amplifies the work of artists who are collaborating with communities to enact social change. She has previously worked in many other capacities at the intersection of art and civic life, including as studio manager at Socrates Sculpture Park. She writes and lectures internationally about the power of art to enact social change, and is invested in astrology precisely because it is such a perfect cultural vehicle for both empowering individuals and enacting values like equity and interconnectedness that make a more just and compassionate world.
