When Alfred Nobel wrote his will in 1895, it established that prizes would be awarded each year to commemorate and honor those who made significant achievements in the areas of science, medicine, literature and peace. While no official reason has been given for why he created these awards most experts agree the main reason was one of his brothers died in a tragic explosion while working on stabilizing nitroglygerin. Nobel Prize medals for Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, and Literature are minted in Stockholm, while the Peace Prize medal is minted in Oslo.

It all started when Sir Henry Cole, a member of the British civil service, created the modern concept of the Christmas card along with his artist friend, John Horsley, in 1843, as a means to encourage more people to use the new British postal system. Their first card was sold for one shilling or about 24 U.S. cents. By the 1860s, the practice of sending Christmas cards was more or less in full swing in Britain thanks to the rise and advent of the printing press. No matter how often you actually talk to your distant relatives, chances are you’ll get a Christmas card from them! Christmas cards are a great way to catch up on the year’s highlights if you haven’t had time to get in on all the details throughout the year.

In the series, the Gazpacho Soup Incident took place on November 25, 2180, aboard the JMC mining ship Red Dwarf during its final voyage. Captain Frank Hollister invited Arnold J. Rimmer, the lowest-ranking crew member, to dine at the Captain’s Table and enjoy a course of gazpacho soup. Unaware that gazpacho was traditionally served cold, Rimmer demanded the chef take it away and bring it back hot. The officers laughed at Rimmer’s mistake, and he never ate at the Captain’s Table again.

The Ancient Greeks and Egyptians often used gingerbread for ceremonial purposes.---but in the 16th century gingerbread figural biscuits made their first appearance. Queen Elizabeth I of England asked her staff to make gingerbread figures that looked like the foreign dignitaries and the other guests of honor and later presented them in the likeness of some of her very important guests. According to Swedish folk tradition, gingerbread man cookies hold magical powers for making wishes and gingerbread cookies freeze well and can stay frozen for up to six months...so if you want to get your holiday baking out of the way this weekend...you can!

News; game: general trivia; funny idiosyncrasies with the English language; goodbye/fun fact: National Peanut Butter Fudge Day on November 20 is when we try our hands at making a delicious batch of fudge. There is a wide range of viable peanut butter fudge recipes to be found on the internet and elsewhere, but what they all have in common is a quick prep time (a matter of minutes, in some cases), and a short list of simple ingredients that most of us probably already have in our kitchens. As a bonus, peanut butter fudge is much easier to make than chocolate fudge, because it doesn’t involve melting the chocolate to a specific temperature measured by a special thermometer. Peanuts have the most protein of any nut — seven grams per serving — to provide long-lasting healthy energy.

They say an apple a day keeps the doctor away, but a glass of apple cider at the end of a long day can rejuvenate the soul. Apple cider is made from freshly harvested apples that are mashed and made to resemble applesauce. This is then pressed to extract fresh juice and fermented. After the fermentation process is done, we get the sweet and spicy apple cider . The origin of apple cider dates back to 3,000 B.C. when the Celts in Britain made the beverage using crabapples....but it was bitter. The Norman invasion of England in 1066 introduced acidic cider apples and advanced apple-pressing technology to make the juice-extraction process easier. It’s all about DIY these days. It’s very easy to make cider at home, so find that online recipe and get going!

Today there’s more than 60,000 miles of trails across the nation. Not to mention, hiking is great exercise allowing you to burn over 550 calories per hour. Plus, being in the outdoors allows you to get away from your phone and appreciate nature’s beauty and wonder. So become a sojourner...you could even join a hiking club!

However, just about any fruit or vegetable can be pickled. We consume a phenomenal 5,200,000 pounds of pickles each year in the United States. While pickles can be high in sodium, they are a good source of vitamin K. In moderation, they make a great snack. BTW...drinking pickle juice helps with muscle cramps, helps regulate blood sugar and it helps to balance gut health!

Music has been bringing joy to humans for thousands and thousands of years. Archaeologists speculate that the “Divje Babe Flute” is the oldest musical instrument. It’s dated to be approximately 43,500 years old and is made out of a cave bear femur. Of course, when the technology for audio recording was invented in the late 1870s, it changed the way that music was able to be presented to the world. A lot of work goes into being a musician, and not everyone‘s aware of it. Musicians spend hours a day practicing and hours a night playing at bars, clubs, and concerts. Ever wonder why musicians sell merch, go on tour, and lend their face to commercials? Well, the average musician only earns about 6% from sound recordings, and less than a cent per stream.
