As the psychedelic underground pushes upward into our mainstream awareness and the legal above ground, Psychedelic Divas is here to serve as a guide for those who might be interested in exploring whether these medicines are right for them. Let’s be clear, these medicines are definitely not for everyone, and we are not promoting their use. What we are providing is education and a deeper understanding of what’s possible—both the good and the challenging—when it comes to choosing whether or not to explore these powerful molecules. In past episodes, I’ve often mentioned accessing information in psychedelic sessions from my spirit guides. But what does that really mean? I’m your host, Carla Detchon, and in Episode 26, I share my personal experiences over the past 30+ years of learning to access and work with a range of spirit guides from ancestors to angels, to gods and humans and even my pets. 25. A Trip Through Psychedelic History
Episode 25 with Marsha Rosenbaum, PhD, is a journey back through the psychedelic time machine. Marsha started her medicine journey back in the 1970s, both as an underground explorer of psychedelics and an above-ground researcher for the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). For nearly 20 years, she was the Principal Investigator on grants from NIDA to study women heroin addicts, cocaine, methadone maintenance treatment, and MDMA. She then moved to drug policy and education at the Drug Policy Alliance in San Francisco (where she is Director Emerita) where she founded the Safety First drug education project. Back when Marsha, got her start, the general view was that all drugs were bad, which then led to the creation of the war on drugs and all its devastating impacts. Marsha is one of the many voices that has helped our society to come to the new understanding that some drugs can actually be very beneficial and that the drug war did more damage than any drug ever did. Rachel is a psychologist, researcher, and author of "Listening to Ayahuasca" and "Swimming in the Sacred: Wisdom from the Psychedelic Underground." In this episode: Rachel discusses her formative years at the Esalen Institute in the late 1960s, reflecting on the wild, unstructured, and sometimes dangerous environment that shaped her therapeutic roots. We explore Rachel’s decades-long relationship with ayahuasca, including her personal relationship with the plant spirit. She also talks about her experiences with other psychedelics, and the importance of spiritual guidance and integration. Rachel explains the inspiration behind her books, especially "Swimming in the Sacred," which features interviews with 18 underground female guides—most with well over 20 years of experience. 22. I Told My 95-Year-Old Mom I Do Psychedelics
For over a year, I’ve been creating Psychedelic Divas quietly, without fanfare or a lot of promotion. I told myself I was doing the work my guides had asked me to do — launching the podcast — but deep down, I knew I was still hiding. Hiding from visibility. Hiding from judgment. And, surprisingly, hiding from my 95-year-old mother. In this deeply personal solo episode, I talk about how I shared my psychedelic path with my mother for the first time. For years, I kept this part of my life hidden from her, assuming she’d never understand or accept it. With guidance from my inner team (and a little help from Oprah), I designed a multi-step unveiling that involved clinical research, a YouTube interview, a delightful lunch with Sheri Salata (Oprah’s former executive producer and a dear friend), and a handful of heartfelt letters from members of my community. What unfolded was more than just a conversation — it was a profound healing for us both. It was also the key to unlocking something in me that I hadn’t realized was there. It cracked open a new layer of freedom, visibility, and trust within myself. This episode is about truth-telling, hard conversations, divine listening, and learning to ride downhill with joy after an uphill struggle. In episode 21 I share my recent experience at the Psychedelic Science Conference in Denver where I got to hang out with many of the guests on this podcast. It’s also where I met today’s guest Sia Henry. Sia is deeply dedicated to liberation and racial justice, with extensive work in criminal legal system reform and abolition. She is a Senior Policy Associate at the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) and the founder of The Hood Exchange, which introduces formerly incarcerated Black communities to international travel. During the discussion, Sia shares her personal background and explores the intersection of psychedelics, restorative justice, and criminal justice reform. We talk about her early experiences with psychedelics and the fact that psychedelics are not fully integrated into the Black community. She also delves into the transformative potential of restorative justice practices for addressing systemic harm, the importance of racial equity in advocacy, and her vision for the future of criminal justice reform and how psychedelics could play a healing role. 20. The Current State of Psychedelics: An Insider’s Perspective
We are celebrating the one-year anniversary of the podcast with a cornerstone of the psychedelic renaissance: Amy Emerson. Amy is a respected leader in the field of psychedelic-assisted therapy. She was Lykos Therapeutics CEO for an important period in advancing MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for post-traumatic stress disorder as a drug with the FDA. In 2003, she began volunteering with the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS), assisting with clinical research monitoring. Her expertise was instrumental in establishing MAPS' clinical department and managing the MDMA Clinical Development Program. When MAPS founded its Public Benefit Corporation in 2014 to develop and commercialize MDMA-assisted therapy, Amy was appointed CEO. The organization, later rebranded as Lykos Therapeutics, completed multiple Phase 2 and Phase 3 clinical trials and raised a successful Series A all working toward the goal of obtaining FDA approval for MDMA-assisted therapy for PTSD. Amy resigned from her CEO role in September 2024. Currently she is an advisor in the psychedelic research field. In this episode, Amy shares about her own personal psychedelic use and how that led her to her early volunteer work with MAPS. We discuss what happened with the FDA approval process with MDMA, what went right, what went wrong and where the process goes from here. As part of the what-went-wrong focus, we explore what can be done to minimize the harm from inappropriate sexual encounters in psychedelic therapy, including the importance of therapists doing their own shadow work to help mitigate such abuse. We do a deep dive into the world of trauma and how these medicines can help provide healing on a number of levels. Amy also provides her dream scenario for where the psychedelic world could ideally be in ten years. 16. A Healing Journey from Trauma to Transcendence
In episode 16, we go deep with Coltrane Lord. Coltrane is a psychedelic integration specialist, artist, and healer. We trace Coltrane's personal journey from trauma to transcendence, her transformative experiences with plant medicines, and the founding of the Wonderland Project, a nonprofit organization that connects marginalized women suffering from PTSD due to domestic violence, rape, and sexual exploitation to trauma-informed psychedelic care. We look at the importance of safe and sacred psychedelic practices, honoring indigenous cultures, and the broader implications for women's healing and empowerment through psychedelics. Coltrane also shares the inspiration behind her Eden Experience, an artistic project aimed at empowering women to reclaim their bodies and heal through creative expression. 13. Honoring the Legacy of Ralph Metzner
In this episode, I interview a dear psychedelic sister, Cathy Coleman, who was married to my teacher, Ralph Metzner for 31 years. Cathy is the author of the recently released book, Ralph Metzner, Explorer of Consciousness—The Life and Legacy of a Psychedelic Pioneer. This book contains over 60 tributes, essays and stories from people who were deeply influenced by Ralph’s work (spoiler alert, I’m one of the contributors). In addition to being Ralph’s wife, Cathy earned a doctorate in East-West Psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies where she also served as Director of Student Services and later Dean of Students when Ralph was Academic Dean and professor. Cathy later worked as Executive Director of EarthRise Retreat Center at the Institute of Noetic Sciences, as President of Kepler College (of Astrological Arts and Sciences) and with CIIS’ Center for Psychedelic-Assisted Therapies and Research. She was co-founder, with Ralph, and is a current board member, of the Green Earth Foundation. She is also an extremely talented professional consulting astrologer, who I can personally recommend. Cathy shares personal insights into her life with Ralph, from tripping on ibogaine with Terence McKenna to intimate details surrounding Ralph’s death in their home in 2019. We talk about Ralph’s relationships with Timothy Leary and Ram Dass and his deep commitment to integrity, forgiveness, and the expansion of consciousness, and we also talk about our personal experiences in a 12-year women’s group. My dear friend, Alan Levin, interviewed me for his podcast Crossing the Boundary. I first met Alan in a Ralph Metzner circle, and we have been dear friends for decades now, sharing many, deep transformational moments together both on and off the mat. It was an honor to be featured on his podcast and to share tales of our time together with Ralph. Alan’s connection with Ralph predates mine by many years, and it was fun to journey back in time together to reminisce about one of our most important teachers. Here's what Alan wrote in the email he sent out promoting this podcast: Carla and I were in ceremonial spaces together many times with the masterful guide, Ralph Metzner. Metzner’s approach to psychedelic ceremonies included what he called “divinations,” purposeful inner journeys for opening to divine guidance and healing. He would take us through mythic realms and lead us through spiritual practices, some of which aimed to heal wounded parts of ourselves and explore our relationship to the physical, psychological and spiritual aspects of male and female consciousness. Through her work as an integration coach and through her podcast series, Psychedelic Divas, Carla supports people in the preparation and integration of psychedelic journeys. She is passing along the legacy of Metzner’s wisdom teachings. Her emphasis, as the podcast name makes clear, is on the feminine. While ultimately, we all need to balance the male/female within, the long suppression of the feminine in humanity calls for us to highlight that aspect of our nature. We need an affirmative action focus of our attention on HER for our personal benefit, and for the much-needed transformation of the collective human consciousness. Psychotherapist Melissa Whippo shares her history working with women both before and after birth to help them with anxiety, depression and other mood disorders. Melissa was behind the first study to determine whether ketamine was safe for lactating mothers. We discuss how psychedelics might mitigate hormonal fluctuations during PMS and perimenopause, addressing issues such as feminine rage and how ketamine can often soften challenging mood swings. We take a dive into the more “real” side of motherhood and the difficulties mothers face including bonding difficulties and partner support, while also exploring the profound, often psychedelic, nature of the childbirth experience. Melissa shares personal accounts of ketamine and psychedelics significantly alleviating her depression, which she was shown had actually been her mother’s depression that she took on at birth. She also credits psychedelics with fostering a more empathic mothering perspective and describes how she has shared her own medicine use with her teenagers.
