The Media Industry is in Denial About the Real Existential Threat? w/ Nilay Patel
Is the biggest threat to creative industries an Army of Teenagers Willing to Work for Free? And what do we do about it? Yes, you read that right. Nilay believes the biggest threat to the advertising and entertainment industries writ large is the aforementioned Teenager Army. What that really means, he says, is that Creators are the new ad agencies, and creative jobs at ad agencies are going away. Why employ professionals when you can throw a few bucks at the kids to market for you? So what are creatives to do? By that, I mean people who want to create things professionally and be paid for it β filmmakers, artists, writers, etc. Well, we have to build our own audience utilizing any and every tool at our disposal, and then leverage that audience as proof we should be paid for the work by Big Creative because it gives them access to our audience. This is not a new idea, necessarily. But itβs happening faster and on a larger scale than ever before. So I suggest you listen to what Nilay has to say. Heβs very smart.
