Derek Warfield and the Young Wolfe Tones were fabulous as always, joined by special guests the Trinity Irish Dancers and Chicago Garda Pipes and Drums. What a great evening! Here are a few pics. Have a great St. Patrick's Day/birthday!" Shel O’Toole emailed a photo: "Hi Marc, I’m finalising a set list for my upcoming concert at Cresfest, a folk and roots festival held in Creswick Victoria Australia each April. Skedaddle, the trio I play in, are doing a short gig on Sunday 16th at the Uniting Church in Buninyong, a village just outside Ballarat. The focus is songs that reflect Celtic spirituality. Thanks as always for the weekly feast of music. Regards" Patrick Rieger emailed a photo: "Hi Marc, My Saint Patrick's Day observation started a few days early. My family and I were joined by a friend at Mullaney's Harp & FIddle the Wednesday before, thus avoiding the crowds. Our friend John McCann had a solo show that evening, and as always he did a great job. The day of the Holiday was mostly what I had said before, staying home to listen to music and avoiding the madness anywhere it was being celebrated. After my family was done with school and work, we went to the cemetery to visit my mom, who I am named after. She loved Saint Patrick's Day and being of Irish heritage. We lit her memorial candle, which has a green transparent insert, and played a few Irish songs from the music library on my phone. I wish she was here to see all of the ways the family and I are involved in the Irish community.

Ermagerd the Bard wrote about this next song: “The song is what I wrote in response to a real thing that happened to me once upon a time while being a queer medievalist on the internet. I've been involved in the SCA for a couple of decades, and am also openly genderqueer. And this one time one of my recordings was used in a podcast where the theme of the episode was my kingdom, and due to some miscommunication…. there were some misspellings of names and titles of performers and a couple of song titles were incorrect. Well somebody in our kingdom proudly posted the episode in our kingdom's facebook group and said hey, look at our bards, this is cool. And I took it upon myself to comment with a few corrections so people would know who the performers were and what those songs were, and thank the poster for being excited about it. A while back the committee within the SCA that is in charge of registering people's names and titles and such on an international level had been working on finding alternative titles for genderqueer and nonbinary type members so they wouldn't have to use titles like Lord/Lady, and this pertains to me because I'm genderqueer. So in my comment I remarked that my name would be written Ermagerd, Nobilis, and that nobilis wasn't a surname, it's a less gendery Latin form of Lord/Lady and it's the title that describes my awarded status in the SCA. Well this one particular ancient member took a huge offense to the existence of ungendered titles and people, and threw an angry rant into the comments. How dare we harsh her medieval vibe, nonbinary people aren't historically authentic, why does everybody have to shove their gayness down her throat, why can't we pretend "politics" doesn't exist when we're playing medieval dress - up, etc. etc. I never responded to her directly, but I watched as my whole kingdom rose up to defend not just me, but the historical existence of other genders of people, the importance of acceptance in a big - tent international hobby group, the importance of the SCA's core values of chivalry, honor, and courtesy, the years of dedicated research done by the names and titles committee... and all this from people located in Texas and Oklahoma. The consensus was that yes we genderqueer people are historical, there's tons of proof, and people's very lives aren't just "politics", and even if it was just some modern thing, she didn't drop rants like this against people wearing glasses and using wheelchairs and indoor plumbing, and if she wanted to call herself by her (also made - up) venerable title, she could very well try to be a good example for treating other people well. It was a wondrous thing to behold, and this conversation unfolded into hundreds of comments, largely supportive and accepting, over a couple of days of commentary…. I Walk Among You took shape in my head on the second day, and it's intensely personal. I'm real, all of us are real, we're not just citations and talking points and theory and psychology and modern trends and political correctness and wokeism, we're human beings with lives, and feelings, just like the queer people who came before us in all the cultures in all the eras throughout time. I've performed it twice, once in a tavern during my own set, to thunderous applause, and once as a guest artist in a more famous friend's concert, and again the clapping went on longer than I expected. I think people need to hear that we were always here, and I think people need to hear it in forms that touch their feelings, like storytelling and songs. It's especially important that younger queer people get to hear that they're not a fad, that we had ancestors, that we have history, that they're not alone but the inheritors of a proud tradition of sacred people surviving and thriving for centuries upon centuries. Thanks for letting me get that off my chest.”

Mark Adamczyk emailed from Akron, Ohio: "Mark, Just wanted to reach out to you about the Irish and Celtic Music Podcast. I found you on Sirius XM last year (March 2024) while recovering from back surgery (herniated a disc last February. 220 V down the left leg - that was a TON of fun!!) Hearing you mention recovering from hip replacement surgery the other week made me feel a certain kinship with you around the podcast. About 3 weeks after surgery, my wife and I received an invitation to travel to Ireland with our kid's high school band for them to play in the Dublin St Patrick's Day parade. (Our kids have graduated but I still cover the sports as team physician!) Having made enough of a recovery to do the walking needed, we made the trip and had an absolute BLAST touring Southern Ireland (Dublin, Kilkenny, Blarney, Killarney [my favorite!!], Ring of Kerry, Cliffs of Mohr). When I got back to the States, I started looking around for ways to listen to Celtic music as we thoroughly enjoyed listening to it while on vacation. I then found your podcast and have been listening somewhat regularly since. (Summertime tends toward country music for me. But when the weather gets colder, especially after the holidays, I find myself looking for you again! I also catch up a bit sitting outside on a weekend morning on our back patio at other times when I get the chance!) We also got a new dog soon after coming home and named him Guinness in honor of the trip! (We also thought he reminded us a bit of a pint of the brew with his white accents! Check out his collar!) When I take him on his daily walks, you are a regular on our playlist! Me walking my Irish dog and listening to the I&CMP while recovering from back surgery - beautiful!!! Thanks for helping with my recovery! Hope you are doing well with yours and look forward to continuing to listen more over time. I attached a few pics for you too - some from Ireland in places which I'm sure you will recognize and one of Guinness and I on our latest walk today!! Slainte!!!”

The first half is slow hour where some memorize tunes, while beginners learn the basics of playing jigs, reels, and horn pipes (among other types of Celtic music. We focus on popular tunes in Baltimore area sessions. Later the tempo picks up and individuals call out something they want to work or just play with others. Occasionally some one brings out a song they’ve been working on. I started attending right after Covid, and it’s been an important part of my week since. I feel it connects to my cultural heritage and great fellowship with others. The moto of the club is “Ceol, Cultúr, Craic”, music culture and fun." Mike and Linda Albers emailed: "Hi Marc, Hope all is going well with you, Mike says drink whiskey, it takes away the pain 🙂. Thanks to you, we know these bands and are looking forward to a week of sun and music, especially after the cold temps of the last 10 days. Take care and we will see you at DragonCon if not before." Daniel Ide emailed from Fallbrook, CA: "Mo Chara Marc - I trust all is well with you on this gorgeous day in February. Well, I have been having a wonderful time this past year or so reconnecting with my ancestral Irish and Celtic roots, in part, through the music I have been enjoying on your podcast; Irish and Celtic Music Podcast. In addition I have been practicing, and playing quite enjoyably, the Bodhran. Only more recently I have joined up with the local Irish Cultural community in San Diego, California: The House of Ireland and Comhaltas San Diego. Between the two I am sufficiently busy with all kinds of opportunity to connect and share with others. I am even taking Irish - Gaeltacht classes and learning the language of my Irish ancestors. Last September 2024 I experienced my first trip to Ireland. I specifically visited Westport, County Mayo as that is the most identifiable leaving off point for most of my Irish ancestors: McCormack, Garvey, Cosgrove, Shanley, and so on. My last name “Ide” is of a more ancient Celtic origin hailing from Suffolk, England and Northern Germania. I will journey throughout those parts in future pilgrimages of reconnecting with my ancestral roots. My trip to Ireland in September 2024 was centered around the land, the people and the music. All of which I enjoyed in abundance, so much so that I am heading back for another visit in the beginning of June 2025. In the meantime I have discovered that a Bodhran Summer School (https://www.craiceann.com/index.php) hosts a week long series of workshops on Inish Oir (Inisheer) in the Aran Islands every year in the beginning of July. Like I said, more opportunity to celebrate Celtic culture through music than I know what to do with. So, as you can see, I am in it “hands and feet” as they say, with a clear horizon for more than I can imagine. I am super grateful to you and your Podcast. I have a good time of regularly practicing my bodhran along with all the wonderful artists you present on your show. You and your Podcast are a delightful part of my celebration of Celtic culture through music, and an essential ingredient in reconnecting with my Irish and Celtic ancestry. Many Blessings to you and yours. Beannacht"

Often, the next morning, my son would ask me about a particular song he’d heard (he called it Leprechaun music). We became fans of so many band. You, of course. Young Dubliners. Heather Dale. Serious Kitchen. Ceann. Syr. Wild Colonial Bhoys. Jesse Ferguson, Barley Juice, Gaelic Storm, the Elders, Enter the Haggis. The Prodigals. Bad Haggis. Ed Miller. I could go on and on and on. When my son went to high school in TN, the PE teacher and soccer coach was from County Mayo. He and my son used to sing Back Home in Derry, Pair of Brown Eyes and Leaving of Liverpool together. They were the only two that knew what in the world they were singing! Life happens, and I took a wee break from the podcast. 2 years later, I learned you were still going! I am so happy I’m back in the fold! I actually started with Podcast #1; I listen while I work from home. I’m up to # 372 , date 8/23/18. I love hearing how your podcasting has changed over the years and I’m discovering new bands daily, and rediscovering some others. I hope you can continue to do this podcast for another decade or two! Respectfully, "

Many of the artists are new to me, but I do love it when you play some of my local favorites - The Secret Commonwealth, Clare Cunningham & The Sternwheelers to name a few. But this week, I heard an old favorite of mine, Broken Wings by Cherish the Ladies. Years ago, a 2 - disc Celtic compilation CD called Song of the Green Linnet made its way into my possession. It quickly became a favorite, and the first track on disc 2 happens to be Broken Wings. What a beautiful song! I loved hearing it on your podcast, as well as your interviews with Cherish the Ladies last year. Keep up the good work!" Jared wrote: "Hi there. I want to alert you to a wonderful musician who lives in Wexford. Jonny Tennant is his name and he is part of the Traditional Arts Collective. I met Jonny back in 1998 when I attended the Irish Music Summer School at the University of Limerick. We hung out every time I was in Dublin. He showed me the versatility of the bodhran when he took me to a blues club and played along with the musicians there. He’s a singer/songwriter. He plays guitar, bazouki, bodhran and the dourd. I’m sure meeting him would be a fabulous experience for those sharing this adventure in Wexford. Kind regards. Shel O'Toole, Singer of Songs, Teller of Tales, Weaver of Webs"

It's hauntingly beautiful. Your voice floats above the soft harp in the background. But that's just my opinion; I could be wrong. ;o)” John also responded on a podcast chat where I wrote: "I thought it was funny this morning to hear an ad on the public edition of the podcast from Amazon Music because they no longer allow the podcast on the streaming service🤣🤣" He responded: "I don’t use Amazon. Why won’t they allow the podcast?" Here's my response: "I don’t specifically know because I haven’t actually looked it up. But if I was to guess, I can think of two reasons. One reason is competition. Both of those platforms are music discovery platforms. The podcast is also about music discovery. So I’m sure that doesn’t help. The second reason makes a lot more sense. That is monetization. I suspect that they are required to pay royalties for all music streamed on their services. They have AI that recognizes copyrighted songs and if there are a whole bunch of them in a single podcast and they can’t easily monetize that This explains why YouTube recently started allowing the podcast to be published again because they have an AI that recognizes tracks and they pay royalties for music played" If you want to join the conversation, visit our Patreon page and join our Patrons of the Podcast.

Pittsburgh is a small faire, but the musicians are still great. We could only spend one day there, so we didn't see them all. We did get to see The Reelin' Rogues, The Craic Show, Sarah the Harpist (Sarah Marie Mullen), and just as we were leaving at the end of the day, Magnus and Maggie. Despite the musicians and us seeing each other one or two times a year, we still get to be friends. Big smiles. Daniel from the Craic Show wanting to clink glasses at the Pirates Pub. Charmas' clientele for performing at Irish parties aged out and they simply aren't having parties anymore. St. Pat's is a dying holiday. Bagpiping is still going strong but the Highland Games events haven't rebounded to their former size and it's hard to get new generations excited from scratch. Bands like Tempest are still playing for their longtime followers. Bands like Altan have provided so much great instrumental music that there's enough supply in the world to last forever, without more being produced. If Celtic musicians want to get fed by playing music, they have to create something new and necessary for the next generations. I have no idea what that should be, but I think the best way to get peoples' attention is to create music that is truly innovative, relevant, and useful! It's a good challenge if we decide we are up for it :)"

You asked for a picture of what we are doing while listening. Mine is attached." Mike Sigler emailed a couple photos: “Hi Mark, Mike Sigler here. I’ve been listening to your podcast regularly for a while now and have been meaning to write for almost as long. So what have I been up to: I’ve been running sound for a little Celtic music dinner concert series at The Old Brogue Falls Church Virginia, one of the several Irish pubs in the Washington DC area. The series runs in the Fall and the Spring and consists of two dinner seatings and a wonderful performance of Celtic music. I’ve been running sound for them for about two years (a new skill for me) and have been having a blast. I’ve attached pictures of the groups from the last two concerts, one by Jug of Punch (Pat Egan (Guitar), Sharon Knowles (Harp), Tabby Finchan (Key Board), John Knowles (Fiddle)) and the other by Charlie Zahm and Tadd Marks. We’ve got three more concerts coming up this fall and I’m very much looking forward to them. Thanks for all you do – your show keeps reminding me to play and engage where I can (even if I seem to always find out about the local festivals only after they are over!). Best," Jeremiah Donier emailed an image: "Marc, I love your podcast and music. After visiting your merch website today and getting a free CD, I think you can use more designs. Attached is something I created based on the "Some Like it Scot" photo by Rich Johnson, https://www.pinterest.com/pin/176766354114786077/. I reached out to the photographer for his permission to design this and was given the okay. So, I wanted to create something fun and uplifting for the New Year with the saying "Up with Kilts! Down with Pants." I can add your logo too and whatever else you want to see (except for what's under the kilt of course - he he!). I can provide a vector file so it can be printed and scaled to whatever size is needed for the podcast's merchandise. This is free because I don't have much money to contribute, you give so much joy to the podcast listeners, and it is my small way of saying thanks for being so wonderful. Let me know what you think. Sláinte!"

You do such a fantastic job of bringing us varied and beautiful music, I can’t thank you enough. I listen to it while I’m knitting old and new Scottish patterns. I don’t think that I have any Irish or Celtic ancestry, but I’ve felt the music since I was a little girl. I have been supporting you on Patreon, but I just received a notice that they are changing the monthly donation to only one dollar. It doesn’t make sense to me to give you less money! Thank you so much and again please know that you do a fantastic job." Sean Malloy of Band o'Brothers emailed photos from the studio: "Merry Christmas Marc! And thanks so much for including "Christmas Time Again" in Episode #690, "Light a Candle in the Window." We're honored to have our music played alongside all the wonderful musicians on your podcast. When I saw the title of this week's podcast I thought perhaps you had included our song "On Christmas Day," which begins with the line "We light a candle in the window for weary travelers to find their way." But I was pleasantly surprised to hear that you also have a tune featuring the Irish Christmas image of a candle in the window. I find it to be such a lovely symbol of hope, hospitality, and mindfulness of people who are not with us but hold important places in our hearts. We've been spending some time at Bonehead Studio in our hometown of Cheshire, CT lately (pictures attached) and we hope to have our new album ready by February - so new music in time for St. Patrick's Day. You'll be among the first to know when we release it. Thanks again and Merry Christmas," David Tustin had a song request: "Marc, You asked an interesting question. Don was a God loving person, loved his family and encouraged cat and dog rescues. He also enjoyed Scotch Whisky! The best song could be one of your cat drinking songs or maybe you know of something better for your podcast. Taing mhòr!

Peter Wood emailed about Stubby Shillelaghs: "Hi Mark, I wrote a few years ago about playing the show with my wife in the car on dates and on our wedding day, and now we are expecting our first child. We don't listen to the show together much anymore, but when we go to the Renaissance Faire we played it (just missed you again!) and I put it on when we went for a swim on a summer evening when she wanted music without getting interrupted by YouTube Music ads. Since this year's Renaissance festival she's asked a few times for Tartanic when she's been in the mood for "my" music. Recently I was listening to a different podcast that plays novelty songs around a theme (Bitslap with KBC if you're curious), and the theme of the week was Drinking, so of course some Celtic - sounding music came up, and for part of a set I thought I was listening to your show! Of the two songs in particular that got me confused, the first was the Vodka Song by Stubby Shillelaghs (https://youtu.be/h9YRbJSbPw0) which I'm unsure if it or the band have ever been played on your show. It was followed by Sober on St. Patrick's Day, and at first I thought I might have heard it on your show, but then when it got going I realized it wouldn't have fit in on your family friendly show. Turns out it's by Psychostick. I know you've got ties to the FuMP collective so you're probably already aware of it. The Vodka Song at least would be a fun one to play if you've got the permission." Patrick Rieger emailed photos from Ohio Renaissance Festival: "Hi Marc, My family and I, along with our friend Chenna from Nashville, spent Labor Day Weekend at the Ohio Renaissance Festival, three days of faire. Ohio is a big faire with plenty of celtic musicians, but even with three days we didn't see them all. We did see Captain John Stout (aka Richard Brentar), Donal Hinely, The Harper and the Minstrel, The Toasted Clover, The Jackdaws, Bettina Baudville, Seán Nós, and The Lady Victoria. I had never heard of a nose harmonica until I met Bettina Baudville; that is what she is playing in the photo. Also I never heard celtic music played on a ukulele until I met The Toasted Clover. Donal Hinely was featured on the Renaissance Festival Podcast years ago when you were still a host, but until this year I had not seen or heard him in person." Despite three long days of working the faire, Victoria was able to join us for a quick dinner one night. And before the weekend was done, the four of us already planned to go back next year."

It was a bit of a challenge, but I launched the 2024 Kickstarter for the podcast. It was a challenge because I’m just over two weeks out from having hip replacement surgery. It’s incredible that they can do this major surgery and just two weeks later I am walking. I mean, I am still working hard every day to strengthen my leg, but just wow. Nevertheless, I only had two episodes in the can. And I’m struggling to stay on top of the podcast, let alone launch a Kickstarter. But the Kickstarter is designed to promote the podcast, so it makes sense to launch it as soon as possible. Anyway, if you love the podcast, hearing all of this great music each and every week, even when I’m kinda down for the count. I was also happy to hear you mention my artwork for the upcoming kickstarter album pin. However, I need to say, my name is Toler. I know my email is MrChristopherPatrick, but my full name is Christopher Patrick Toler. Having a couple of cousins who are ALSO named Chris Toler, (and wanting the signature 'Chris P.' for a comic strip I also do, prompted the use of my middle name. I now find myself attempting to start a brand, 'Tolergraphics,' and believe having my correct name mentioned along with talk of my designs would be helpful. Thank you in advance for addressing this, Christopher (Patrick) Toler P.S. Still love listening to the podcast. I'm happy to be a small part of it!” Cheryl Arvio emailed: "Dear Marc, Loved the interview with Shannon Heaton, especially hearing about her time in Chicago and playing in sessions. My partner has known John Williams for years, and we are actually going to Brendan and Siobhan McKinney's restaurant tonight! They host sessions there on Sundays. Great coincidence to hear them mentioned on your show just as we were planning to go to their place for dinner and a James Joyce program! If we run into them, I'll mention having heard the shout out on Irish & Celtic Music Podcast! Best, Cheryl"

Mark Clavey sent this picture right after St Patrick’s Day 2024: “Hi Marc! Here's our write - up for how we spent St Pat's at O'Malley's Pub... and a few pictures... "There was more March Madness for the band this past Sunday as we celebrated the Day of the Festival of St Patrick with a noon - performance at O’Malley’s Pub(Episode 136). The day started around 10:00a as the band started straggling in and setting up. It was a brisk 40° when we loaded in, and would reach a balmy 48° when we loaded out at 4:30. Early - birds had already formed a line by 10:30 – despite the fact that the Pub wouldn’t open until 11:30. (This plan was well - advised given the epic proportions of Snake Saturday’s one - person - out/one - person - in crowd.) By the time the band started playing at noon, the bar was full and the crowd lively – being more vocal for the sing - alongs than they were for the toasts. There was a larger - than - usual number of Tullamore - fans than is typical for St Patrick’s Day (as it was at lunchtime on a Sunday rather than a workday). Shout - outs to Mike, Amy, Anna, and Jason; Ray and Carrie; Eric and Dena; Eric, Linda, and Eleanor; Trey; Connie, Brandie and Rhonda; Shannon; Rob and Mitch; Andrew; Lisa, Craig, Ed, and Mary; Mikayla; and Jenn. Mark successfully navigated the afternoon notwithstanding the return of his chest - supercold (that knocked him out of the February weekend) and having sliced up the index - finger on his strumming hand. (Evidently, while holding a pick between the thumb and the bird - finger is a doable thing, it DOES produce a Charlie - horse at the base of the thumb when you do it for three hours straight.) Said navigation was aided with the Black Bush providing the kind of lubrication that makes your engine tick. We played until 3:30 before turning the stage over to The Kelihans – who would, in turn, hand off the stage to Chance the Arm at 8:00p. In the meantime, Ryan Rancudo and Bob Reeder handled the St Patrick’s Day festivities for the audience in the upper cellar. Overall, it was a great afternoon and (we’re assuming) a great night as well. (Photos courtesy of Amy Cripe, Mike Moran, and Mary Hanover.)" Best, - Mark”

It’s been so great hearing all of the independent artists you feature on the podcast. Thank you for what you all do and maybe one of these days I’ll submit some of my music for your enjoyment as well. I’m blessed to have a job I love - as a luthier at a music store in Kenosha WI. While I was working on this auto harp (just a cleaning and restringing as well as putting new support springs under some of the bars) I thought I should take a couple of pictures and send them your way. I thought you might appreciate it." Donald W White emailed a photo from Oregon: "I'm painting - - as usual. I've appreciated Celtic music for a long time (loved Fiona Ritchie's former show on NPR - "Thistle & Shamrock"), but I just became a fan while sailing from Quebec to Boston. On a cruise ship of "old people," some amazing Canadian musicians (including Nova Scotia vilionist Hayley Ryerson) performed some raucous Celtic tunes from Cape Breton Island. I'm now hooked! Count me in. Don White, A new fan from Oregon " Wolbert van Wageningen emailed: "Hi Marc, My name is Wolbert van Wageningen. I live in the North of the Netherlands. Several years ago I started listening to your Irish and Celtic Music Podcast. I liked it a lot because of all the independent music. But sometimes it was a bit too independent according to my taste. I forgot to listen regularly and it got out of sight and mind. In the meantime I started working (volunteering) at a small regional broadcasting company in my hometown of Winsum. I got the possibility to make my own programmes and one of them I titled " Highlands and Islands" a reference to Scotland of course, but also a reference to the region where I live (het Hogeland - Highland) and the Waddensea with small islands. Due to illness I was not able to make the show in our radiostudio, but my homestudio was good enough to make broadcastings. I started broadcasting at Mixcloud and posted my recordings there. Looking for music I discovered your Irish and Celtic Music Podcast at Mixcloud. Nice surprise! Started listening again. Thought it would be nice to reach out to you. Want to make my compliments for your shows and your perseverance in making them. Way back you were in the 100 - 200 range; now almost 700!! I promoted your show to my small group of listeners (Celtic Folk is not that big in the Netherlands) and will do so in the future. Keep up the good work! Kind regards,"

Yoje emailed on Patreon: "Greetings! After listening to the podcast almost a year, I finally got around to subscribing on Patreon - apologies it took so long. Though I noticed that with the RSS feed, I no longer get any of the podcast/album art when playing, which is especially noticeable since I listen to it regularly on my commute and my car screen shows a big generic musical note instead of the artwork! Any ideas what I may be doing wrong? Thanks again for an awesome podcast!" Darren Mahoney commented on a Patreon post: "Would like to see more west coast Irish music content. Sean Daly (Shams), Stout pounders, Coming up three’s, Stark raving plaid, Whiskeydicks we have some great acts out here! 😁" Charlie O'Brien emailed: "Hey Marc, My name is Charlie O'Brien, I'm a folk singer from Killarney. For the past two years I've been in Argentina researching and singing Irish trad songs printed in a rural paper in Buenos Aires in the late 1800's. Last month I released an album of these ballads "The Trackless Wild, Irish Song of the Pampa" during a Culture Ireland sponsored tour of Argentina with trad. fiddle player Aidan Connolly. Here's a download link for the album, would be great if ye could give a song or two a spin on your podcast. I think you played songs from a previous album of mine "Hy Brasil" a few years back. beir bua,"
