055: Tips for New Dads: Building Connection and Confidence in Birth and Parenting with Dr. Jay Warren
In today’s show I welcome Dr. Jay Warren, a prenatal and pediatric chiropractor deeply passionate about families and especially new dads. I was double lucky to be his Hypnobirthing childbirth educator, and the doula for the birth of his son. Dr. Jay runs local dad groups, has created several courses, from prenatal bonding to what new dads need to know through the first year of parenting. Dr. Jay also hosts (2) podcasts: Healthy Births, Happy Babies and The Dadhood Journey. I asked Dr. Jay to share how education and the birth of his son shifted his entire chiropractic practice to what it is today. Dr. Jay shares his personal birth story, the pivotal role of fathers in the birth process, and the benefits of active fatherhood. We also discuss the unique challenges fathers face in connecting with their newborns and emphasize the importance of educating and involving dads from pregnancy through to the early months of parenting. Dr. Jay gives tips on how to connect with your baby and take on the new role of being an engaged father. Dr. Jay wants to support you with all of these unknowns. He does coaching and has a Facebook Group for you to connect with new and seasoned dads. You can contact him at: Let’s connect: Have questions or comments for this episode? 054: Katie’s VBAC - a Transformative Journey from Hospital to Home Birth
In this episode, Katie contrasts her two births. Her first birth led to a cesarean that was unplanned and unwanted. Katie’s hope is that her lessons can serve as teaching tools and warnings for new parents to get educated early, find the best support and be aware that you have intuition when it comes to birthing your baby. Katie discusses what red flags showed up along the way, her regrets in feeling it was too late to switch providers. Katie recognizes where she could have done more as far as education and understanding what “Birth Culture” really looks like in the Untied States. She said it took a lot of therapy and self-awareness to see how her birth unfolded and how that gave her the tools to change things up for the second birth. Her postpartum was tough and she credits that to the trauma that she experienced with her birth. Her choice to give birth at home the second time around was due to the research and data showing how much safer it was for the outcome that she wanted. Once again, her hope is to encourage expectant mothers to educate themselves, interview care providers, and make personalized, informed decisions for a more empowering birth experience. 053: How To Have a VBAC: Part 3, Emotional and Physical Readiness
Episode three of our VBAC series delves into the "journey" of preparing for a Vaginal Birth After Cesarean (VBAC). We cannot emphasize enough the importance of emotional and physical readiness. We want you to look at your stuff- the challenging stuff and the parts that have hurt or disappointment around them. We have found that parents who can be really honest with themselves, possibly look at their birth from other angles and gather more support, have better births the second time around. We talk about the significance of storytelling, ownership of past birth experiences, and the role of vulnerability in healing and growth. We will help you explore the impact of fears, the value of education, and the support from therapies and spiritual practices. This discussion also covers recommendations for resources like Hypnobirthing, VBAC classes, and therapies, offering some solid ideas for those seeking a different birth outcome with empathy and informed decision-making. 052: How to have a VBAC: Part 2, Finding the Right Supportive Provider
In this episode of the VBAC series, Ashley and I discuss the challenges of finding a supportive provider for a VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean). In part two of this series, we discuss the importance of choosing a provider who genuinely supports VBAC, rather than one who is merely tolerant or unsupportive. It is SO IMPORTANT that you find this provider early, as in before you are pregnant again, to broaden your options for care. Even if you are thinking of getting a repeat cesarean, you want a provider that is supportive either way in case you change your mind and decide on a VBAC. You would be surprised how many families get closer to their due date, get some more education, and then want to change their mind. You also may need to change your insurance to have the best provider in your area available to select and that would mean timing the open enrollment to switch. We highlight the necessity of researching VBAC-friendly hospitals and providers, considering relocation for better care, and understanding the differences between VBAC and TOLAC (trial of labor after cesarean). We again cover the role of peer support organizations like ICAN, the significance of continuous versus intermittent monitoring, and the impact of language and words used by providers. We also talk about possible limitations imposed by providers on labor timing and conditions, as well as the importance of finding supportive care whether in the hospital or through midwives and birth centers. 051: How To Have A VBAC Part One
Overcoming Fear and Preparing for VBAC Success This is the first in a series on VBAC. In this episode, Ashley and I focus on the complexities and considerations surrounding Vaginal Birth After Cesarean (VBAC). We are talking about the importance of self-forgiveness for what you “think” you may have taken on form your previous birth experience and how to resolve that. We go over the current high cesarean rates and attribute them to systemic issues rather than individual inadequacies. Your body can birth! We of course promote education on cesarean prevention and VBAC success through support organizations like ICAN (International Cesarean Awareness Network). Prevention of the first cesarean is always at the forefront, but we also want more dialogue around the often underestimated risks of repeat cesareans. The importance of informed decision-making and shared decision making. The episode also addresses the societal and personal fears associated with VBAC, stressing the need for education, openness with partners, and professional support to process and overcome fears. Especially when it comes to partners, have you asked them in detail of what they felt last time? Getting on the same page about this birth while also tying up loose ends from the last one, makes all the difference. We ultimately promote self-compassion and grace as key to embracing the journey of VBAC and future pregnancies. Let’s connect: Have questions or comments for this episode? 049: Trusting Your Birth Journey: Insights from Nikki Helms of San Diego Community Birth Center
In this episode, Midwife Nikki Helms is here! Nikki is the owner of the San Diego Community Birth Center which is the only black owned birth center in San Diego. Nikki’s birth center offers a lot of co care which means people see an OB and also come to the birth center for more education and understanding of the birth process. Some of these families will be birthing at the hospital but want balanced information to make the best possible choices within the medical model system. And some families do co care for birth at the birth center but keep an OB with their insurance for testing and possible transfer purposes. Nikki and I discuss the importance of personalized care, the shortcomings of the traditional medical model in addressing individual needs, and how co-care with midwives can help expectant mothers make informed, autonomous decisions. The conversation also covers topics such as the purpose of routine medical practices like 36-week cervical exams and the impact of cultural norms on pregnancy care. Nikki emphasizes active listening, the value of time in patient care, and the necessity of questioning and understanding medical advice to regain trust in one's own body. 043: Natural Twin Home Birth Story
Today's episode features a twin home birth! Kelly and Kevin came through my Hypnobirthing classes in 2020 and had a home birth for their first child(Kevin’s 2nd child )and assumed they would have their second baby at home too. But finding out they were having twins opened a few more hoops to jump through. As with so many couples who find out they are expecting two or more babies, parents begin to hear how induction or a cesarean is the next step. Kelly did not allow that to be her story right from the beginning. While she was open to things changing, she never treated her body or her babies as if they were broken and needed saving. That mindset made all the difference in her pregnancy and birth. The importance of having a great doula is also highlighted in today’s show as our very own Ashley was in fact their doula who caught a medical issue just in time to get Kelly the help that she needed for herself and her babies. 042: How to Breathe For Birth

042: How to Breathe For Birth
Today's episode we have midwife Jenny West back to talk about breathing techniques for labor and birth. Sometimes as educators there are challenges with teaching breathing because it's simpler than people think. Hypnobirthing breathing(or any method of breathing you are using) just takes practice ahead of time so you can stay focused when your body is feeling intense sensations. The more you practice, the simpler it becomes and the more your body and brain become used to it. Practice develops a habit and a rote pattern within your body. Breath is truly the only thing that you can control during the labor. We reference Sarah Buckley's research and the importance of understanding the limbic and the endocrine systems within your body. When you have developed a mindset that believes in your body's ability to birth and you know how to keep your mind calm, that feeds into the power of your breath and the power of your contractions(surges). Labor and birth are the completion of a process that has been going on since conception. Your body knows how to release the baby that it has grown so perfectly without any help from the outside world. When you use your breath to remain calm and steady, you tell your limbic system that you're not in danger. As mammals, we have built in systems for fight or flight for protection. Unless you need protection in labor you don't wanna trigger the fight or flight, you wanna be in rest and digest. Jenny runs study groups for upcoming midwives and does parent consultations for all things pregnancy and birth. Jenny currently resides in New Mexico. 041: What Is Birth Autonomy?
In this doula episode, Ashley and I are opening up a conversation with doulas on autonomy and it may get spicey. If you listen as parents – it will open up some questions for your doula as to what type of advocacy they are offering you for the birth room. Be open to having a straightforward conversation with your doula and practice the skills you will need for parenting. This episode contains many of the reasons we are hosting an advocacy training in October by Traci Doula Called Keeping Your Power®. To join us, click the link below in the notes or find the registration information on mine or Traci’s socials. Autonomy doesn’t only apply to the families that we serve. It begins with us. Where are WE with our personal autonomy? Are we able to model autonomy for our clients if we are wishy washy with it in our own lives? How do WE avoid hard conversations? What methods are there to turn our fear of confrontation into humans just having conversations about hard things? How do we teach that? What are we doing in our doula practices that is working or not working very well when it comes to autonomy? We talk about it today and want to hear from you. Bottom line - Are we able to remind parents of the empowerment they already have within to say yes or no if WE are not tapped into our ability to do the same? Let’s reclaim our voice, make choices that we stand by and ask the hard questions with the risk of not getting the answer we desire. We will live through it AND can make a different choice if that answer doesn’t work for us. These topics and skills are not covered in most of our doula trainings. Getting connected with other doula communities and continuing education are some great ways to refine what we provide our families. This episode is a must-listen for doulas seeking to enhance their practice and better support the families they serve. 038: Boundaries With Grandparents
This episode is a must-listen for pregnant parents or grandparents eager to support their loved ones in the most respectful and helpful way. Kimberly Beppler is my guest today. Kimberly has been a Postpartum Doula for over 25 years. She is a Lactation Consultant and also owns her own doula agency. She has also worked with an astounding 750 sets of twins and 20 sets of triplets. To say that she has been in the field and worked in helping to navigate boundaries with hundreds of parents and grandparents might not do that task justice. We cover so many nuances and topics in this episode to the often-overlooked struggles that new parents grapple with, especially in an era where the village mentality of raising children has diminished, leaving parents to navigate the waters of parenthood with less communal support. Listeners will gather ideas and tools and understand the importance of setting clear boundaries with grandparents, who, while well-intentioned, may inadvertently overstep. Our conversation reveals the delicate balance between welcoming the invaluable support grandparents can offer and maintaining the autonomy of the new family unit. There is a path to a harmonious transition into parenthood, offering actionable advice on how to communicate effectively with extended family members. 037: Do You Have The Right Doctor?
The importance of self-advocacy in a business-oriented healthcare system cannot be stressed enough. Our discussion today aims to help parents understand they are empowered already as expectant families to choose a supportive care provider and navigate the healthcare system confidently. I feel like so many childbirth educators talk ad nauseum about the critical task of carefully selecting a care provider for pregnancy and birth. But we have to!! So many birthing families come back the 2nd time feeling so disappointed in not having invested that time and careful selection. In today’s show we are emphasizing the need for proactive research to find a provider who supports natural birth and aligns with personal birth preferences and values. EVEN IF YOU WANT MEDICATION in your birth. You will have a better shot at lower interventions and possible complications caused by those interventions with a “hands off” provider who trusts your body to work with your baby. We discuss the impact of large provider groups on continuity of care and lack of personalized support. And of course, a focus on advocating for oneself and the importance of midwifery care. We offer you some red flags to watch for, such as inflexible language and fear-based tactics from providers. These are much to common and are not specific to you because they are used with everyone. There is significance in you feeling safe and heard in order to have a good birth experience for both you and your baby. There are challenges in switching providers late in the game which is why we want to reach you as early as possible with this information. Let’s connect: Have questions or comments for this episode? 035: Alicia and Gino's Birth Story
Our first birth story of Season two! Alicia and Gino share their birth story today and dive into the emotional and practical facets of their labor and delivery. These parents took to heart the conscious preparation for their baby’s birth and really invested the time and energy into their relationship during their pregnancy. We start off with Gino’s take on how Hypnobirthing classes helped him tune into what worries and concerns were internally going on with his wife by the conversations we had as a group. Having the group dynamic to hear what other couples were working through helped them become closer and more baby focused rather than self-focused. As a nurse practitioner with a heart condition, Alicia recounts her labor experience, highlighting the necessity of cardiac monitoring and her thoughtful decision to opt for an epidural. Gino reflects on his journey as a supportive partner, emphasizing the importance of being able to stay present and engaged. Together they talk about the critical use of communication, advocacy, and setting up unwavering support during labor and the postpartum period. 032: How To Set Boundaries, a Doula Business Reset
Todays show is crafted for doulas but honestly – we can all use a little boundary refresh right? Ashley and I are joined today by Doula Heather Taylor. First, for background - Heather shares what happened during her personal birth experiences that brought her into birth work. We then begin with what kind of boundaries and filters Heather brought to birth work from her life. These are going to be very relatable to most doulas. Heather talks us through her fast and furious first year in business that led to exhaustion and doula burnout. She knew something needed to change but realigning her work and home boundaries was going to refine what she thought her ideal doula role was. Growing pains – we all have them in birth work(more than once) and Heather was able to shift them to create a sustainable career. Boundaries foster trust and reliability in home and work life. Good boundaries with your clients also bring solid trust between you. Having a comprehensive understanding of what boundaries are and how to successfully implement them will expand you and lead to personal and professional growth. O31: Hyperemesis Gravidarum(HG) in pregnancy - Jelina’s Birth Story and Becoming a Doula
This show contains the reality of what pregnancy can be life if you have hyperemesis gravidarum(HG) during pregnancy. This is a condition of severe nausea & vomiting and that can lead to dehydration, malnutrition and weight loss. It usually lasts through the entire pregnancy and ends once the baby is out. Our guest today is Jelina, a doula and birth photographer. Jelina has had two births, one in a hospital and the second at home with midwives. We talk about both of her births today and include how her first one led her into birth work. And a heads up to a nurse named Lauren who inspired her to become a doula and probably doesn’t even know the impact she made at Jelina’s first birth! Jelina also goes into self-advocacy when it comes to conditions that you may have during pregnancy. HG only affects about 3% of the pregnant population and so many people who have it are brushed off and told that it’s just morning sickness. Jelina wants you to know that there are Facebook groups out there to support and help you and that it’s ok to question your providers when your symptoms are being ignored. This is a case of the squeaky wheel gets the oil. Jelina now lives in Illinois and her website is https://jelinasonnenberg.com/ and her Boudoir photography is Let’s connect: Have questions or comments for this episode? 30b: How To Be A Birth Advocate
Todays show is all about advocacy in the birth room. While this episode is the third in our World Doula Week shows, I also don’t want to limit it just to doulas because parents will be using these skills in prenatal appointments and pediatric appointments for years to come! Traci Doula is my guest today, who will also be my guest in October when I host her doula training Keeping Your Power® Advocacy in Action Workshop here in San Diego. I want to mention her 2024 trainings in Denver(May), Spokane(July), Boston & Oregon(Sept), San Diego(Oct) and Calgary in November. Traci has been in birth work for over 25 years. Our discussion goes into detail about what advocacy is, why many doulas don’t feel comfortable with it and how lack of communication around that with parents can unintentionally be causing harm to the families we serve. One of the reasons I wanted to host Traci’s training in San Diego is because I know first hand that when doulas have the same background in training, they communicate differently, feel more supported and stay in the work longer and stay mentally healthier. Today’s show has a lot of somethings for everyone! You can follow @TraciDoula on IG and @TraciDoula4 on Tiktok. And for one on one mentoring or Life Coaching – her website is . 030: There's More To Birth Education Than Science and Anatomy
In our second show featuring childbirth educators, we welcome Haize Hawke. Haize is a Mother, Doula, Student Midwife, Meditation Teacher, Healer, a Life Coach and Spiritual Counselor and I am blessed to call her my soul family. This conversation is much more than regular birth education and will show you just how expanded connection between your self and your partner can be. Haize goes deep in how she focuses on “excavating” the parent relationship while in her birth classes and also during prenatal meetings with her clients. The caretakers of this new baby do so much better when they are “Team Us.” Haize talks about how having vulnerable conversations with each other and being on the same page with ideals and standards, set the stage for how you will be running your life as a central unit from here on out. Thinking through all of life’s possibilities BEFORE your baby is born, helps you find out where you are as a couple and where you will be as a parent to your new baby. Haize also discusses the importance of slowing down during pregnancy so you can have an easier time doing so in postpartum. We are meant to have “preggo brain” so that we take more time to relax and integrate becoming a parent and reflecting on the life we are leaving behind. There is an ancient system in place within our bodies that if we don’t override it, will only serve our highest good. And doulas- just wait until you hear how Haize sets the intention in the room for not only her clients but for each staff member as they enter the birth room. This episode is not to be missed! You can find Haize for a consultation or Virtual Birth Coaching at or you can DM her on IG or Facebook @IAmHaizeHawke. Tell her you found her on our podcast for a special discount! 29b: New Doula Mentoring Call, Georgia
We are back with our second World Doula Week Bonus show! This week Georgia joined me for a mentoring call and we had jokes! Georgia took her training four years ago, attended one birth and then took a hiatus. Time got away from her and now she is back! Georgia had her passion reignited and it’s time for the next action steps. We cover self-confidence, authenticity and the emotional hurdles that we face as doulas. We also walk through the daily practice of a positive mindset, feeling comfortable with setting boundaries and how those are truly just self-care at the end of the day. In order to avoid doula burnout, you need to know your limits and set your boundaries with intention. They get easier with practice! We also go into life skills that we gain in doula work and how trusting your own intuition allows you to help the families you serve and be 100% present. Letting go of the attachment we have to birth outcomes and our “perceived idea of success or failure” has a simple fix that you can start practicing today. Thank you Georgia for being open with your doubts and your willingness to own the step to say yes to all that’s in front of you. Welcome back! If you are needing more support with your mindset and daily practice – you can download my to build your self-confidence and help you with looking towards yourself for the answers you seek. Being solo in the birth room doesn’t have to be daunting. You have all you need inside. ($19.99) Our begins next month! We would love to have you join us! 29: Mental Health For Pregnancy
Postpartum mental health is beginning to be recognized more in mainstream media. But what about pregnancy mental health? Did you know that signs of postpartum depression or the risks for developing it can start during pregnancy? In today’s show I have Beth Warren, a LCSW and author who specializes in perinatal mood disorders. Last year Beth and I created an online course highlighting her book, The Pregnancy and Postpartum Mood Workbook to get families early help with what to look for in their mental health journey. I, myself suffered with pregnancy OCD but at that time no one was talking about it. It was treatable and I had no idea. Our hope with this course is that families start their preventative mental health journey early in pregnancy so they can be actively managing any symptoms that regularly get lost in our medical system. Remember there is a baby coming and now is the time to prepare and cover all your bases so you can be there 100% for them. Our discussion covers trauma-informed care, understanding attachment styles, and the impact of birth trauma. We also address the spectrum of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, the need for early intervention, and the benefits of online therapy with a newborn. Thinking that this mental health stuff doesn’t apply to you may be an obstacle to set aside and really explore where you are with the help of Beth and her course. You and your partner will leave with an understanding of how this may already be affecting both of you(perinatal mood disorder do not only affect the one carrying the baby) and what tools there are here to help. Getting this support before your baby joins your family will make all the difference. Beth’s workbook is included in the price of the course. 028b: New Doula Mentoring Call, Jeanne Marie
It’s March! And that means World Doula Week is almost here! This is the first of several Bonus episodes just for doulas that we are releasing this month. In today’s show we have our first mentoring call. I welcome Jeanne-Marie Paynel – a doula transitioning from being a volunteer doula in a hospital program to working as a private doula. Jeanne-Marie is no stranger to working with parents, and I have referred to her for years. She has a master’s degree in Montessori education and has her own Podcast called The Art of Parenting. She offers solid birth and parenting education with her doula packages so parents are more prepared for pregnancy and parenting. Our discussion includes our personal experiences in the birth room and how our own triggers are reflected to us as we offer support. When we become aware of why these patterns show up – we understand what healing we have to do for ourselves. Like attracts like and if we want a certain type of family to serve, we need to radiate those qualities. I want to thank her for her vulnerability and openness to sharing her doula experiences with us. Jeanne Marie and her many offerings, including private mentoring and Parenting School can be found at . Let’s connect: Have questions or comments for this episode?
