#7: 5 Tips on Backpack Safety
As summer ends, we begin to turn our attention to the new school year. While school supplies are important, one of the most important things needed for your child is a proper backpack. So, which backpack do you buy? Your child may be a 6-year-old and in 1st grade or you may have a high school daughter who wants a cool new backpack for the upcoming year. Do you choose the most ergonomically correct pack or choose the latest new style? What does ergonomic even mean? It can all be too much! Finding the right backpack is definitely a challenge. To help, our chiropractors have shared some tips on what to look for when back to school shopping for that perfect backpack. Rules to follow: Look for thick, cushioned straps that will sit high on the shoulder of your child. Adjust the straps on your child’s shoulders so that the backpack is resting on muscle and not the outer bones of your child's shoulders. Some space between your child's back and the backpack is needed. Position the straps so that roughly 2-3 inches of space is between their low back and the backpack. This allows for adequate airflow and spacing. Too much weight is a challenge with all the materials children are bringing home for school work these days. The American Chiropractic Association recommends that a backpack be filled with no more than 10-15% of your child's weight. For example, a 100lb child should only have 10-15lbs of weight on his or her back. If that seems impossible, then a rolling backpack may be a better option. If your child is asked to carry more weight than is recommend and a rolling backpack is not allowed, then you may consider buying more than one of the same book. That way, your child can have one copy at school and the other at home. Ask your child to place in their backpack the appropriate items needed for school only. Leave the extra toys, nicknacks, and doodads at home. Finally, adjust the straps so that they are pulling inward and not just downward. When looking from the back, your child's backpack straps should resemble the top of an X more than an H. This places less pressure on your neck and allows your child more movability while wearing their backpack. If you or your child suffer from pain associated with wearing a backpack, then let the trained professionals at help you. We take an integrated team approach to healthcare by allowing our medical and chiropractic providers to work together to better serve you. We are a primary care clinic providing family and physical medicine treatments to all ages. and see how we can best serve you.

#6: Telemedicine In Response to the Coronavirus
Not since the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918 has the United States seen as drastic of a challenge to its healthcare system as it is right now. In response to this change, the world has quickly adapted to allow doctors better access to their patients while providing for prescribed social distancing. While the novel coronavirus known as COVID-19 is spreading across the globe, patients who are at high risk due to weaker immune systems are mandated to stay at home. While this is good practical advice, how can these patients safely keep up with their own routine healthcare? Insert Telemedicine! Telemedicine is not new. The technology has been around for years, but the government and commercial health plans would only cover these services under very strict circumstances. In response to COVID-19, Governor Abbott of Texas waived certain regulations and directed the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) to issue an emergency rule relating to telemedicine provided through state-regulated insurance plans. Also, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has temporarily broadened telehealth access to Medicare patients. Medicare can pay for office visits furnished via telehealth in all areas of the country (not only rural areas) and in any setting, including in a patient’s home. In addition, the U.S. Health and Human Services (HHS) Office for Civil Rights stated that it will not penalize physicians for noncompliance with HIPAA when they serve patients in good faith through common, nonpublic-facing communications technologies, such as FaceTime or Skype. While we don't recommend using Facetime or Skype for telemedicine, except for in extreme circumstances, we do see how The Back & Body Clinic can fill a need during this nationwide crisis. As of 3/23/2020, we are now fully capable of offering telemedicine services through our HIPAA-compliant patient portal. This means that our providers can consult, examine, order labs and tests, give at-home directions, prescribe needed medications, order orthotic braces or supports to be shipped directly to you, or screen for possible COVID-19 symptoms while you stay safe in the comfort of your own home. All appointments are face-to-face with one of our providers, and you are able to use any Windows, Mac, iOS, or Android device with a camera, microphone, speakers, and an internet connection. We are able to see any patient within the state of Texas. Also, since we are an essential Primary Care facility we are remaining open to serve our patients during this crisis. Rest assured that we are taking extreme precautions such as examining and measuring every team member's temperature each day, wearing protective gear during patient visits, and deep cleaning and sterilizing our equipment in-between every patient encounter. Finally, remember that while we wisely take precautions we were not meant to live in fear. Take advantage of any opportunity to slow down and enjoy those important people around you. While improving your physical health, take time to rest and improve your mental, emotional, and spiritual health. "For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline." - 2 Timothy 1:7 If you are choosing to stay at home and practice social distancing during this time, let us help you stay well. #5: 4 Health Benefits of Gratitude
When we give gratitude, we receive something precious in return…better health! And not just physical health, but mental, emotional, and relational health improves as a result of gratitude as well. Below are some of the health benefits of gratitude: Reduced Blood Pressure According to one study, patients with hypertension who “count their blessings” at least once per week enjoyed a noticeable decrease in blood pressure (Shipon, 1977). A thankful heart is a healthy heart! Increased Exercise Frequency While not an effective “fast weight loss” plan, gratefulness can help you get fit! One study showed that participants who practiced gratitude regularly for 11 weeks were more likely to exercise than those who did not (Emmons & McCullough, 2003). Also, studies have found that exercising outdoors helps fuel feelings of gratitude better than exercising indoors. Improved Sleep Practicing increased activities of gratitude for two weeks increased sleep quality and lowered blood pressure in one study (Jackowska, Brown, Ronaldson & Steptoe, 2016). Simply spending time before bed counting your blessings can your lower heart rate and create feelings of peace that help achieve a deeper sleep. Improved Overall Physical Health Grateful people are healthy people overall! Evidence shows that the more grateful a person is the more likely he or she is to enjoy better physical and psychological health (Hill, Allemand & Roberts, 2013). At , we are grateful for every one of our patients, and try to promote an attitude of gratitude in all that we do. We take an integrated, team approach to primary medical and chiropractic care that listens to your needs.

#3: Our Approach to Healthcare
Do you think we live in a healthy country? The United States makes up only 4.2% of the world’s population, and that 4.2% outspends the entire rest of the world on healthcare. We have the most expensive healthcare in the world, bar none. We consume over 75% of the world’s medications, and when it comes to one certain prescription, opioids, the United States is responsible for over 90% of the world’s consumption. But that's not the worst of it. The third leading cause of death in the United States was side effects from medical treatment. Out of 225,000 per year, over 106,000 of those were from the side effects of drugs that were prescribed correctly. At , we are different on purpose. We believe that great healthcare requires a team of forward-thinking medical and chiropractic providers that know how to work together to achieve the absolute best outcomes for every patient.
