Matthew Fries Trio
All music used with permission by the Matthew Fries Trio. The Fog - Fries Continuum - Fries For My Nephews - Williams Senhoras Do Amazonas - Bosco Quarantine - Fries June Blues - Fries Michigan based pianist Matthew Fries is a joyful voice on the piano with a unique and recognizable style that is authentically rooted in the tradition of the classic jazz pianists, while still looking forward to the future of the music and the instrument. As a composer and leader he has performed his own music extensively, recording ten albums of mostly original compositions. His music has been described as playful and hopeful, introspective, full of joy and wonderment, and awash with tonal colors. But it is his deeply swinging piano style and collaborative spirit that have also made him an in-demand sideman for both instrumentalists and vocalists. Featuring Matthew Fries on piano, Carlo De Rosa on bass and Keith Hall on drums, it’s the Matthew Fries Trio – Live at the Bop Stop. For this performance, Chris leads a trio featuring Paul Samuels on drums and Jordan McBride on bass. While guitar and piano led trios are common, leading a trio on saxophone is a considerable challenge, and we think you’ll agree that Chris conquers it with flying colors. Go East, Young Man - Miller Blue and Green - Evans Big Sky - Heineman Not Even Two Weeks - Regis Sarsaparilla Song - Heineman Lean Not - Heineman Danny Boy - Standard Grant Heineman first caught our attention at the Bop Stop’s open jazz jam sessions. Back in Northeast Ohio after winning awards at the Berklee College of Music, Grant very quickly worked his way into being an in demand pianist on the scene before decamping for Los Angeles in the fall. One of the earlier episodes of our program featured him in a trio, but the addition of Atlanta born saxophonist Ronell Regis to that trio takes an already talented lineup of up and comers from very good to great. All I Do - Wonder Mother Nature's Son - Lennon/McCartney I Will - McCartney Walking On The Moon - Sting Truth - Flugge Something - Harrison We Didn't Start The Fire - Joel Let Him In/Revolution - Lennon/McCartney Black Bird - McCartney In Your Eyes - Gabriel One of the enduring and arguably underappreciated aspects of music by The Beatles is how easily most of their catalog translates into jazz. There are a myriad of examples of this, one of my favorites happens to be Ben Paterson’s version of ‘Here, There and Everywhere’, which I encourage you to take a moment to look up. Grammy winning drummer Paul Francis understands this as well and his 2022 release ‘All My Life’, and this week’s performance in support of it explores the melodic elasticity of the intersection of The Beatles and Jazz. I have my favorites, and I hope the show has helped you find yours too. But I’m going to cop to something here. This week we have bassist Darren Frate and of the many wonderful and versatile pieces he’s composed and played he added my favorite to the set list. Some artists will cover songs by others, and that’s ok, but Darren will occasionally do original compositions in the style of others, and as someone who used to love to listen to Wayman Tisdale play bass, Darren’s ‘Tisdale’, which you’ll hear on this week’s show makes me just incredibly happy. It’s one piece in an incredible and fun show but I think we can all relate to how great it is when an artist you respect plays a piece you really, really enjoy. All music used with permission by Tommy Lehman. Song 1 - Song 2 - A Home In Any Place - Senpai Uvalde - SmokeFace Jaro - Lehman Song 6 - Song 7 - One of the joys of being involved with this program and though I hesitate to use the term jazz scene is the opportunity to see a group come together, coalesce around an initial idea, and watch that idea grow into a fully developed quartet that produces outstanding music. This week, it’s the Tommy Lehman Quartet, a quartet that debuted at a wine bar in the spring of 2021 with a general intent of exploring existing material and indeed writing new material around jazz from the early 1970s. And that idea grew and grew into what you’ll hear this week, which is a roaring, sold out January 28th, 2023 performance celebrating the release of their first EP, Uplift. Featuring Smokeface on bass, Andrew Senpai on keyboards, Gabe Jones on drums and Tommy Lehman on trumpet, it’s the Tommy Lehman Quartet – Live at the Bop Stop.
