When they reunited a few years ago, they found their music has evolved from youthful, unrestrained, often "sensationalized" displays of prodigious outbursts on their instruments, to a hybrid of powerful, yet highly sensitive improvisation and composition. A favorite of Cleveland jazz writer and folk icon Harvey Pekar, their music lead Harvey to proclaim that birth was "So good that it's scary." You be the judge. Featuring Jeremy Bleich on bass, Joe Tomino on drums and Joshua Smith on Saxophones, and from a June 12th, 2022 performance – it’s Birth – Live at the Bop Stop. Through an eclectic assemblage of touring collaborators and kinfolk, “The Black Whole” seamlessly reconnects jazz to its freer ancestral roots, while consciously and simultaneously working to uproot it through diverse sonic exchanges, instrumental interplay, and contemporary juxtapositions. Pianist and composer Walter Kemp III set out to explore this concept, pushing the boundaries of sound, and bringing with it a sense of cosmic freewheeling along with the other members of the quintet. Known initially as a free jazz performer, Matthew Shipp broadened his audio palate to explore contemporary classical and electronica. First and foremost, though he delights in improvisation, and that is on full display in this solo performance which occurred ahead of his 2021 release Codebreaker. The full group coalesce around the University of North Texas in the early 2000s and grew into a collective juggernaut that sits at the vanguard of contemporary jazz. The horn section stands alone, performing not only with Snarky Puppy and other groups around Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas, but also with the Grammy award winning One O’Clock Jazz Band. They also tour periodically, and we were lucky enough to get them to grace our stage for two sold out shows on March 15th, 2019. Tattarrattat - Formanek Little PeaDrome - Formanek New Drome - Formanek With Chach - Formanek Michael Formanek has been described as “a bold and unclassifiable bassist and composer,” and his trio graced our stage for the first time in three years in support of their latest release Were We Where We Were. The music from that album, and this performance, is based on a set of musical palindromes that started out as graphic scores and were then reinterpreted into conventional music notation. Two time JUNO nominee and Hagood Hardy Award Winner Chet Doxas joins the trio on saxophone and wind instruments, and drummer Vinnie Sperrazza joins on drums. In addition to performing regularly throughout Northeast Ohio, teaching at Kent State University and serving as the organizer of the annual Rubber City Jazz Festival, Theron released his most recent album Spirit Fruit in 2021. He joined us earlier this year with his touring trio that includes Jordan McBride on Bass and Zaire Darden on drums, along with special guest Nathan-Paul on saxophone.
