Live at the Bop Stop - Andru Dennis Trio
This performance used with permission from Andru Dennis. Every jazz scene, large or small, has a performer who serves as the glue that holds groups together. They’re not necessarily the person that leads but they’re almost always the person who helps others shine. In Northeast Ohio in general, and Akron specifically, Andru Dennis is that performer. Andru’s name is almost never on the marquee, but if you’re passing through the Bop Stop here in Cleveland or a bot more often at Blu Jazz in Akron , Andru is the keyboardist and piano player you want to round out your sound. All that said, Andru takes a turn up front in this performance which was part of our Trio Tussle series and he does not disappoint. Featuring Andru on Keys, Smokeface on Bass and Gabe Jones on Drums it’s the Andru Dennis Trio and from a November 17th, 2024 performance – it’s the Andru Dennis Trio – Live at the Bop Stop.

Live at the Bop Stop - Dan Bruce and Theron Brown
Guitarist Dan Bruce and Pianist Theron Brown are frequent quests on the program, so they don’t really need much of an introduction. They both have their own unique style and appear here in advance of their recent releases. For Theron Brown this was 2024’s Spirit Fruit and for Dan Bruce this was his 2025 release with his trio project Ohm!. They both serve as Artistic Directors of regional jazz festivals. For Theron this is the Annual Rubber City Jazz and Blues Festival, and for Dan this is the annual Hingetown Jazz Festival here in Cleveland. While Theron works with the Akron Symphony Orchestra and scores larger ensemble pieces, Dan prefers to focus his lead creative energies in a duo. This is a product of his time in Chicago and it creates a unique sound in a staged venue the size of The Bop Stop, as you’ll here on this program. There are a lot of duos performing what you might call a wallpaper gig, but Dan really focuses his performance energy in featuring the duo at the center of a performance, which is unique here in Northeast Ohio. So we hope you enjoy this performance. From March 2nd, 2024 its Dan Bruce and Theron Brown – Live at the Bop Stop.

Live at the Bop Stop - Marc Ribot Presents: Jazz Bins
Performance used with permission from Marc Ribot. The Hammond B3 sound sits, at least to me, at the core of Soul Jazz. The Hammond in the right hands expresses a depth and authenticity to music that other instruments struggle to match. Guitarist Marc Ribot would take this thought one step further and assert that the depth and authenticity of the Soul Jazz movement of the late 1970s and the New York punk movement going on at the same time had similar expressiveness, even if the two scenes had different circles and different core motivations. Expressing these commonalities are something he’s been chasing ever since, and we’re fortunate enough to hear the fruits of that effort on this program. It’s doubly special because the Jazz Bins feature Greg Lewis on the Hammond B3 and New Orleans native Joe Dyson on drums. From two sold out performances on April 13th, 2024, it’s time to find out what sits at the intersection of Soul Jazz and Punk with Marc Ribot’s Jazz Bins…Live at the Bop Stop.

This performance used with permission from Tommy Lehman. None of the three members of this week’s trio really need much of an introduction. Tommy Lehman is a Northeast Ohio native and a Hartt School of Music graduate who performs regularly across the country both as leaders of his own projects and as a member of Alla Boara and Nathan-Paul and the Admirables. Akron based guitarist Dan Wilson’s career took him on an exploratory journey into foundations laid down by the guitar/organ tradition, eventually leading to an invitation to perform with jazz great Joey DeFrancesco’s quartet, with which Wilson went on to earn a GRAMMY® Award nomination in 2017. Additional work with Christian McBride’s Tip City trio served as a gateway to Wilson signing with and releasing two albums on the Brother Mister record label, the most recent of which is Things Eternal. Bassist Paul Thompson is a 30 year veteran of the Pittsburgh jazz scene and, in addition to his work as an educator he has toured the world wit the likes of Maynard Ferguson and Stanley Turrentine. His bass drives Pittsburgh jazz. All of this is to say, you’re in for a fantastic show. This performance used with permission from Dan Weiss. Three time Shifting Foundation grantee Dan Weiss has been hailed as one of the top five jazz drummers by The New York Times, and his large ensemble recording “Fourteen” made the top ten list of their best recordings of 2014. Weiss’s innovative drumming and forward-thinking compositions have been pushing musical limits for decades. Weiss’s intense study of jazz, classical Indian, contemporary classical, west African, and metal sets a musical platform that creates a sound that transcends conventional style or genre. His compositional trademarks are angular yet emotive melodies, complex through-composed drum parts, rhythmic cycles native to many non-western music, and melodic shapes drawing directly from the Raga System found in Indian classical music. Scaling down to a Trio Dan Weiss has released four albums, and this performance highlight’s selections from the 2024 release Even Odds, which experiments with diverse approaches to composition and improvisation.
