Meet Dave Lenahan. He started out in the music business by being a DJ at WKSU radio on the campus of Kent State University, doing afternoon drive time jazz. He went on to work at Country Station WUBE in Cincinnati OH, but in short order he determined that he was destined to become a hit songwriter. We discuss the anatomy of the song, how to put one together, and what separates a tune from a hit. Dave currently resides in Nashville TN, writes songs for a living, and hosts the podcast “Songwriter Connection” which has released more than 150 episodes on the exploration of songwriting. Unless you work for a major corporation within the music industry, and are blessed to have a great benefits package, you must fend for yourself in order to provide the tools needed to get by in life: health insurance, retirement plans, and the general skills to run your own business. Make no mistake about it, if you are a freelance technician in the touring business – you ARE your own business. This is where the vision of the Touring Career Workshop comes to life: a simple workshop where a lot of the success tools needed are presented by experts in each of their respective fields. One of the resources that Touring Career Workshop provides is dealing with mental health. Their “All Access Online” program provides mental health counseling with a designated counselor either online, or out on the road depending on the conditions, giving a chance for touring professionals to discuss their difficult moments and work through those challenges that arise, whether it be time away from home on the road, or those day to day life situations that sometimes pop up. Executive Director Chris Lisle, along with special guest co-host Sharon Lee who is the CEO of High Road Trucking, join us in the studio to explain how these, and other services and opportunities are available to those who work in the music touring industry. The Touring Career Workshop is a free annual event created by industry veterans Chris Lisle and Erik Parker, designed to serve and educate their colleagues in the touring music industry. The inaugural TCW was held in November 2011 at Belmont University, and was attended by over fifty industry professionals. In the past several years well hundreds of touring industry people have attended their events. TCW is an official IRS 501c3 non profit. Record Store Day was conceived in 2007 at a gathering of independent record store owners and employees as a way to celebrate and spread the word about the unique culture surrounding the nearly 1400 independently-owned record stores in the US and thousands of similar stores internationally. The first Record Store Day took place on April 19, 2008. Today, 17 years later, Record Store Day is celebrated at independently-owned brick-and-mortar record stores around the world. ‘Watching Guns N’ Roses from the side of the stage in London, standing on the set of Saturday Night Live with Paul Simon, receiving a signed skateboard from Carrie Underwood, and mixing front-of-house sound for Kiss…’ These are just a handful of experiences in the rearview mirror of Phillip Kriz’s extraordinary journey in the music industry as a sought-after “roadie” tech, band assistant, and trusted tour confidant. Following nearly 15 years as a dependable road dog, he embarks on what might be his wildest trip yet, making his literary debut with the fictional novel, The Roadie Cartel, in 2023. This action-packed thriller follows a family immersed in drug trafficking under the cover of the music business. It’s about what could go on behind backstage... “It’s the struggle between good and evil set in a world I know very well,” he says. “It follows a character who believed one path was her destiny, only to find out where she was really meant to be all along.” Born and raised in El Paso, TX, Phillip discovered music through his parents. Beyond spinning classics by Led Zeppelin and Bob Dylan, mom even played Howard Stern on their drive to school. Predestining a future in the business, she also brought Phillip to his first concert — U2 and Public Enemy at the Sun Bowl. Not to mention, he caught Robert Plant & Jimmy Page and Alan Jackson when they rolled through town. However, a Pink Floyd gig would be the point of no return for him. After a stint working in the food service industry in San Antonio, he attended and graduated from Full Sail University in Orlando FL where he also worked his first production gigs. Eventually, he landed his “dream job” at production powerhouse Clair Global. Coming full circle, his first assignment placed him on a jaunt with Guns N’ Roses in 2010. He hit the road for the better part of the next decade. Continuing our ongoing series of "Between The Notes" episodes with music industry veteran Jack Sharkey, We have a discussion that is often overlooked, or at the very least ignored... The loss of hearing due to years of performing live music. Jack, who himself suffers from hearing loss because of loud volumes on stage (along with a inexperienced sound engineer on occasion), had permanent damage done to his ears after decades performing live. Ironically, Sharkey also works in the audiophile business for a speaker company, and explains how hearing damage can affect your day to day living, whether its with family, or in the workplace. This outcome comes down to causing injury that can be permanent if not addressed. Jack shares thoughts on how to prevent hearing loss, and what it takes to get some of those frequencies back if the damage is done. As for the episode title, you'll just have to tune in and listen (it comes from the usual antics Jack and Bob do while in the studio!). What started out as a project in a screenwriting class in a writers boot camp, has turned into a novel describing how Nashville, also known as “Music City” evolved into what it is today… or not. Nashville Tennessee is well known for its Country music, but did you know that the birthplace of Rhythm and Blues, or what we these days call “R&B” actually was born in this Middle Tennessee City we call Nashville. The moniker “Music City” was actually derived from the1860’s after the Civil War, when the Jubilee Singers from Nashville’s Fisk University performed in front of England’s Queen Victoria, preceding Country music by approximately 80 years or so. In the studio today, we chat with author Paula Blackman about the “night music” that took place in Nashville in the midst of segregation in the 40’s, 50’s and early 60’s, how the legendary Nashville TN based WLAC Radio had the ability to broadcast across the Eastern United States, and how this worked out in the favor of introducing R&B Music to the World. Marc-Alan Barnette, aka “THUNDER THROAT”, has always been a “square peg in an octagonal hole”. We can’t believe it's been six years in the making to get to this moment, and we wanted to do something special… or at least different. For the first time ever, the host of the show, Bob Bender, becomes the guest! After all this time, we find out what makes Bob tick, how (and why) he got into the music business, and the reason he stuck with it for 50 plus years. He also shares some of the inner workings of the music business, including its sometimes not so nice side of the industry, along with the perils and pitfalls he faced along the way. Hosting the show is Bob’s good friend, Joe Hand, who takes the helm, and asks the hard questions. Created by entrepreneur and acclaimed jazz pianist Peter Martin, this web-based program affords you the opportunity and ability to learn from some of the best musicians in the world. At your pace, and within your level of expertise without fear of being overwhelmed. In this episode, we discuss the Open Studio concept, how it's designed to work at one’s own pace, and its benefits as a useful and versatile learning tool for creative musicians. We also chat with Peter’s new jazz album project titled “Generation S”. Peter Martin is an acclaimed jazz pianist, composer, arranger, educator and entrepreneur. His touring career has taken him to six continents, and Brian has been invited to play the White House on several occasions. Peter Martin performed on and arranged Dianne Reeves’ Grammy-winning release A Little Moonlight and appeared in George Clooney’s 2005 film Good Night, and Good Luck, as well as being the featured pianist and an arranger on the Grammy-winning soundtrack. Peter has also performed, toured, and recorded with Wynton Marsalis, Chris Botti, Betty Carter, Christian McBride, and Joshua Redman, as well as the Berlin Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic. Peter attended the Juilliard School of Music and has been on the faculties of Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, Northwestern University, Tulane University, the University of New Orleans and New Orleans Center for Creative Arts. He has performed workshops and master classes at institutions worldwide, including Oberlin College, Duke University, the Carnegie Hall Professional Training Workshops, Steinway Piano Gallery, the Rotterdam Conservatory, and the Royal Scottish Academy of Music in Glasgow. Back in 2014, there were 15 record pressing plants in the U.S. along with approximately 30 facilities around the globe. There are now 55 record pressing plants in the United States, and 200 plants worldwide. The demand for vinyl records has never been higher than it is now. Because the industry has become craft oriented in recent years, an employee who works in these facilities, which has anywhere from 5 to 14 presses, now has to go through at least 10 to 14 months of extensive training before they can ever press the button to create a vinyl record of consistent quality. But getting that quality to become the industry standard has taken time to get all of these plants on the same page. Enter Dustin Blocker and Alex Cushing along with their trade association VRMA. After spending 17 years as the lead singer of the rock band, Exit 380, Dustin Blocker co-founded Texas-based independent record label Hand Drawn Records in April 2011. Spending several years building the community of artists through live events and regional record releases, Blocker, and business partner, Alex Cushing, launched the vinyl record manufacturing arm of the business, Hand Drawn Pressing in December 2014, with the newest vinyl record presses on the planet in over 34 years landing in January 2017. In December 2019, Blocker along with several other company leaders throughout the vinyl record supply chain, launched the trade organization, Vinyl Record Manufacturers Association (VRMA), whose membership includes; vinyl record pressing plants, PVC compounders, cutting engineers, electroplating houses, recording studios, brokers, printers and record labels. The best art doesn’t always necessarily rise to the top anymore, it's more likely the best marketed art rises to the top. Author and music industry entrepreneur Jeremy Shiloh has been brainstorming this problem as how to get the best singer/songwriters to reach that goal. What came out of this process was to create a peer review process for the totally undiscovered singer/songwriter called Circate. So exactly what is Circate? Cricket’s peer promotion system is designed for creators, such as musicians, filmmakers, video game developers, and writers. The outcome of the peer support in determining your projects are solely judged by fellow creators. The system is designed to have no AI algorithms. A third-generation firefighter, Jason Byrd has always had another fire burning within … as a traditional country music singer, songwriter and performer. Mentored by none other than George Jones, Byrd has played stages across the US and Canada, opening for powerhouse artists such as Tracy Lawrence, Loretta Lynn, Mark Chesnutt, Dierks Bentley and, of course, George Jones. Jason has appeared on the world-famous Grand Ole Opry and made multiple TV appearances. In 2019, Jason retired from his post as a Battalion Chief of the Tallahassee Fire Department to focus on music. Byrd released a self-penned duet with George Jones called, which he’d kept under wraps for years prior. The song was ready for release just prior to Jones’ passing and Byrd held onto it out of respect for his friend. In 2021, with the blessing of Nancy Jones, he released the tune, which was nominated for Single of the Year at the Josie Music Awards. Jason was invited to perform the song recently for celebrity guests at a VIP dinner in Hunstville, AL prior to the Still Playin’ Possum concert marking a decade since the passing of George Jones. Jason currently has two songs nominated for the 2023 Josie Music Awards Song of the Year and continues to delight real country fans with a full tour schedule. On August 13th, 2011, prior to an outdoor performance at the Indiana State Fair by the hit Country recording act “Sugarland”, an approaching severe thunderstorm hit the temporary roof structure of the stage, causing it to collapse. The structure landed among a crowd of spectators, killing seven people and injuring 58 others. The cause was later determined to be a breakdown or lack of communication (a paralysis of sorts) between the Fair management, the production company, and the band, among other entities. Out of this, it was determined that there needs to be a certification process, not only for the actual production aspect, but also the people who put these shows together. Enter Jim Digby. Jim Digby, PMP, is the President of Show Makers, Inc., which proves strategic, tactical and operational project and production management support in the delivery of live events and music touring. He is also the Cofounder and President of the Event Safety Alliance, a Board member of Behind the Scenes Charity, and a frequent keynote speaker and presenter in matters relating to event safety, the events production career path, and mental health in live events. Jim tirelessly and passionately advocates for the safety, health and sustainability of the industry at large. Jim’s nearly four-decade journey in production, operations, and project management roles within the live entertainment, corporate, and music touring industry has had him working alongside artists as diverse as Linkin Park, Enrique Iglesias, Back Street Boys, the Bolshoi Ballet, Phil Collins, and most recently delivering marquee corporate events. Legendary Country Recording Artist Buddy Jewell was the very first winner of USA Network's hit reality show Nashville Star. Jewell, was the true viewer favorite from the very beginning, capturing 65% of the nationwide voting and beating out 11 other contestants, most notably, Miranda Lambert, by over 2 million votes on the final episode that season. His self-titled Columbia Records debut release landed at #1 on the Billboard Top Country Album charts, was certified GOLD later that same year, and garnered two back-to-back top-five hits with the singles "Sweet Southern Comfort" and "Help Pour Out the Rain” with both tunes being RIAA certified 1 million radio air plays. Buddy has been recognized by the Grammy's, ACM’s, CMA’s, ABC Radio Networks, ICMA, ICGMA and CMT with multiple awards and nominations over the years. In 2011, he won the International Country Gospel Music Association's “Entertainer of the Year'' and “Crossover Artist of the Year” awards. On this week’s episode, we have a discussion with Johnny Dwinell regarding what it is that drives artists to hear their songs on radio… and is it worth the cost? Today’s terrestrial radio is attempting to figure out what their future is in the overall spectrum of things. At the same time, the record business is looking to see what their next step might be.Currently they’re going to go with the devil they know (the current format and programming), yet knowing that it’s not working, and not try the devil they don’t know, which is streaming platforms. At the same time, you as the independent artist need to know your customer listening base. Hollywood has figured it out, by knowing who their customer is has become the new norm in television. Why hasn’t the record business, or the music industry as a whole caught up to that paradigm shift? In order to even get the attention of radio these days, you need the following: You Need Spins to achieve market penetration You need 40 to 70 spins in each market to achieve that penetration You need to be in for the long haul (6 to 9 months) Those spins have to happen during peak listening hours The radio station has to have sufficient listenership While all this is going on, you as the artist need to understand that in the record label’s eyes, you’re a small business. These days, record companies are in the business of acquiring small businesses. They just don’t know how to make that profitable for them. Few people have experienced the music business from as many different angles as Johnny Dwinell. Originally a songwriter from Arkansas, Randy Barber moved to Nashville to try his hand at writing hits with some of the best on Music Row. He soon discovered that the bar for great material was set high, and he had to make the decision to either return home, or figure out a way to become a better writer. Soon enough, Randy discovered he had other talents more acclimated for behind the scenes of the music business, and formed his company, Bar Frog Music. Part of his company’s endeavors is focusing on what can be considered the complicated issue of music publishing. On this episode, we talk about royalties, how radio has a play in that stake (or doesn’t), and how independent artists have opportunities to succeed, where previously those opportunities were not available to them. We just have to remember where terrestrial radio equated to one to many, social media, and streaming platforms are one to one, which can level the playing field for today’s independent artist. The buzzword these days is AI. "Artificial Intelligence". It’s a scary topic of discussion if we allow it to be.
