EPYSODE 20: "Sussex", by Bent Wind
Guests: Bent Wind band members Marty Roth and Ed Thomas. When the Beatles hit, bands started cropping up everywhere. Sure, the most successful groups came from the US or the UK, but that doesn't mean smaller countries weren't immune to "cool". Bands from these countries had a difficult time breaking through as they were on smaller labels, with smaller budgets and a reluctance from American radio at the time to take a chance on playing "outsider" music. As a result we have a ton of high quality albums that never achieved any level of commercial success at the time of their release, but now are considered classics. Bent Wind's "Sussex" falls into that category. In 1969 the Canadian band couldn't give them away. Now original copies fetch over $10,000. If you like your psych hard and heavy, this ramshackle album is going to be right up your alley. I hope you enjoy Sussex as much as I do. -FJ ==LINKS== Email me your comments, questions and suggestions to . EPYSODE 19: "Psychedelic Lollipop", by The Blues Magoos
Guest: Blues Magoos singer/guitarist Peppy Castro. At the tender age of 14, Peppy Castro was taught the famous E minor chord on an acoustic guitar. "The minute I played that chord, it was like the heavens opened up". He left home, dropped out of school and pursued a different path. A chance meeting introduces him to Ronnie Gilbert and Ralph Scala and the seeds for The Blues Magoos were planted. "We Ain't Got Nothing Yet" is ubiquitous with 60's American garage/psych rock. It's two minutes of rock 'n' roll perfection. The rest of the Psychedelic Lollipop album proves that these guys - kids really - had some serious skill. The album is a mix of fantastic originals along with choice covers. Sadly all momentum was lost when their first single from their follow up album was banned. One more fantastic album followed before band politics reared it's ugly head. What we are left with is some fantastic music highlighted by this killer album - a necessity for any collection. I hope you dig "Psychedelic Lollipop" as much as I do. -FJ ===LINKS=== Be a pal and support the show on Patreon. EPYSODE 18: "Songs For The Gentle Man", by Bridget St. John
Guest: Bridget St. John. When the most famous DJ in the world champions you and decides to open a record label specifically to record and market your music, well, you're doing something right. Bridget St. John's name may not be as widely known as some of her British folk contemporaries, but her music is deserving of attention for any fan of the genre. Recording her first three albums for John Peel's Dandelion label between 1969 and 1972 she released consistently high quality work, garnering excellent reviews. A fourth album followed for Chrysalis a couple years later and then...silience. Nothing for 20 years. After a long delay, she's back recording and touring again and sounding better than ever. Bridget recalls stories of meeting John Martyn, playing with Michael Chapman, recording demos at Al Stewart's house, hearing David Bowie's acetate of a famous song before it was released and being in an uncomfortable car ride with Jethro Tull when they fired Mick Abrahams. It's a shame Bridget's work didn't find a wider audience as her songwriting and guitar skills are only outshined by her exquisite voice. I hope you dig Songs For The Gentle Man as much as I do. -FJ ==LINKS== Comments? Feedback? Suggestions? Email me: Like this show? EPYSODE 17: "Out Of Nowhere", by Henry Schifter
Guest: Henry Schifter. Here we have yet another album by an one-and-done artist. Henry was an American guitarist who released a few singles with a few labels in the sixties. He finally got the opportunity to record a full-length album in 1971, though he had to go to France to do it. He recorded a strong album, and one that should have warranted some follow ups but it never came to pass. Henry shares some great stories about the recording of the album, his run-in with Johnny Rivers (spolier alert: he didn't like him) and a great tale that includes a great looking belt, a pistol and weed. What a rock and roll trifecta! I hope you enjoy "Out Of Nowhere" as much as I do. -FJ ==LINKS== Sponsoring us on Patreon says "hey, I like listening to your show. I want to hear more". EPYSODE 16: "20 Granite Creek", by Moby Grape
Guest: Moby Grape drummer Don Stevenson. Of all the great 60’s bands that came from the San Francisco area, Moby Grape may have been the best. Their 1967 debut album stands tall among the other giants released that year. Bad luck, terrible management decisions and a record company gaffe for the ages derailed all their momentum (wait until you hear Don’s ‘record company executive’ impression!). By 1969 they had called it quits. But they got the itch to get back together and record a standout album in their discography...the rare “reunion album” that’s actually good. And what happened afterwards? “Well, nobody cared”, Don said laughingly. Take a trip with Don and I as we discuss the formation, the demise, the-reformation, the demise, the re-reformation...well, you get the idea - of one of the greatest bands of the 1960’s and as we dive into each track of this wonderful yet underrated gem. I hope you dig "20 Granite Creek" as much as I do. -FJ ===ERRORS & OMISSIONS=== In this Epysode, I attributed the song "Ode To The Man At The End Of The Bar" to Bob Mosley, when in fact it was actually written by his brother Andy. Also, I reported that the band toured Europe after the release of 20 Granite Creek; this is incorrect. They toured there in 1969. ===LINKS=== We’d love your support. EPYSODE 15: "Dragonfly", by Dragonfly

EPYSODE 15: "Dragonfly", by Dragonfly
Guest: Dragonfly guitarist Randy Russ. Hooking up with a couple of managers from California, they thought they were on their way to the big time. But while the band was living off a $12/day allowance, the managers were getting their cars reupholstered and buying custom-made alligator briefcases. They released one album as The Legend - a mediocre effort of cover tunes and songs from outside musicians thanks to decisions made by the management team. For the second time out though, it was a different story. Given creative freedom, they created a monster, guitar-centric, psychy-blues/rock gem. But continued battles with management resulted in the band breaking up before the album was even released. The label decided to release it under a new name ("Dragonfly"), with no band information on the cover. And just after it was released, the record company closed shop. An album by a defunct band with no record company released in a sleeve with no band information was destined to sink without a trace. One fantastic review at the time wasn't enough to save this one from obscurity. If you like your 60's rock loud, hard and heavy, crank it up and check this one out. I hope you dig Dragonfly as much as I do. -FJ ==LINKS== Hey, follow us! EPYSODE 14: "Red Hash", by Gary Higgins
Guest: Gary Higgins. Here's the scenario: you've been convicted of a crime and have only a few weeks before you begin to serve your jail sentence. What would YOU do with that time? For Gary Higgins, that answer was simple: corrale your musical buddies and knock out a fantastic album. No time for rehearsal, just get in the studio, quickly work out the tunes and get 'em down. Gary had just enough time to complete the recordings before he changed his address to the Conneticut State Penitentiary. His pals completed the mixing, mastering, cover design and got a few hundred copies pressed. And then it sank into obscurity for decades... After completing his sentence Gary rebuilt his life, focusing on his family and his job as a nurse. Red Hash was in the rear view mirror...or so he thought. Decades later he started noticing his "lost classic" was commanding huge dollars. A push by Drag City Records to find Gary finally paid off and almost 40 years after quickly recording an album that hardly anyone heard, Red Hash got a proper re-release briging much deserved attention and critical acclaim to his music. It even allowed him to record a follow up album. My thanks to Gary for graciously taking time to walk down memory lane with me and talk about his wonderful album, his life and his career. I hope you dig the story of Red Hash as much as I do. -FJ ===LINKS=== Hear additional mini epysodes and other bonus content on our Patreon page, here's the link: patreon.com/FarmerJohnMusic Listen to all the songs used in this Epysode here: Follow us on Facebook: Follow us on Instagram: X: @psychrelicss Tik Tok: ===SONGS USED IN THIS EPYSODE=== Songs used in this epysode, in order of appearance. EPYSODE 13: "Fully Qualified Survivor", by Michael Chapman
Guests: Andru Chapman, Bridget St. John & Steve Gunn. In this Epysode we delve into the career of an artist that spanned 5 decades, who recorded more than 50 albums, was adored by generations of musicians and who critics fawned over...yet hardly anyone knows his name. Michael was an immensely skilled guitarist and an excellent songwriter who released album after album to critical acclaim. Even his last albums - more than 50 years after his debut were considered among his best. Here was an artist who never settled, continually pushing musical boundaries...maybe that's why he remained on the fringes. Fully Qualified Survivor is universally considered his best album and we dive into it track by track, though an artist with this body of work has to be explored further, so we also make pit stops throughout the rest of his amazing career too. Michael Chapman is a name most people have never heard of and that's a shame, as I can't think of another artist with this amount of incredible work who is more deserving of recognition. I hope you dig Fully Qualified Survivor and the rest of Michael's incredible career as much as I do. -FJ ===LINKS=== If you like this show, consider supporting us on Patreon for as little as $1/month. EPYSODE 12: "The Rose Garden", by The Rose Garden
Guests: Rose Garden bandmembers John Noreen and Bill Fleming. Mid 60's Los Angeles; a band called "The Blokes" were knocking out their versions of Beatles and note-for-note, immaculate copies of Byrds songs when a chance meeting with Gene Clark - who had just left the Byrds culminates with him joining the teenagers on stage for a couple of tunes. Next thing you know, he's giving them some of his songs and writes one specifically for them to record. He even considers managing them at one point. Adding a new lead singer, they change their name and record one folk-rock gem that spawns a hit and an appearance on American Bandstand. The future looks bright, but some poor management decisions combined with Uncle Sam's draft notices derails their momentum and we're left only with the one album and a follow up single. With help from Rose Garden guitarist John Noreen and bassist Bill Fleming, we dive into this self-titled 1968 folk-rock beauty. EPYSODE 11: "Back In The HCA", by The Bowes Road Band
Guests: All 4 Bowes Road Band Members - Alan Lewis, Phil Rawle, Dave Pescod, Ted Rockley and Jakarta Records label co-owner Jannis Stürtz. In a Rodriguez-like tale, we hear how an album recorded 50 years earlier for a school project gets discovered in the unlikliest of places by the one person who can make a story like this happen. This "band" didn't even have a name until 2023, and now hundreds of thousands of people have streamed their album and bought vinyl copies. From an original private press of 50 copies to international attention, it's an amazing story about a wonderful album their creators made and then for all intents and purposes completely forgot about for 50 years. With help from all four band members and the record label owner, we hear this incredible two-part story: the unbelievable fortune the band had to even get the album recorded in the first place and then the even more unbelievable tale of how it was discovered decades later. "It's like digging up a time capsule", the band says. As great as the story is...the music is even better! BONUS: With approval from the band and record label, we are also happy to include a track left off the reissue, playing it in it's entirety here, making it the world-wide exclusive premeire of the track! EPYSODE 10: "Heritage", by Christmas
GUEST: Bob Bryden. Welcome to Canada, eh! We’ve showcased albums from around the globe but this time out it’s an all Canadian affair as we discuss the incredible career of Bob Bryden. From his early teen days as the “accidental musician” to his time with Reign Ghost and the formation of Christmas, “I wanted to start my dream band”. We dig into each track of their fantastic 1970 album Heritage and discuss their follow up Lies to Live By and the ultimate dissolution of the band. Bob’s story doesn’t end there though as we then chat about his other bands and his solo career as well as his time producing one of Canada’s premier punk bands. He’s had a fascinating life in music with many great albums along the way. I hope you dig Heritage as much as I do. -FJ ==LINKS== 1) Become a Patreon backer for as little as $1/month. EPYSODE 09: "Rebirth", by Blonde On Blonde
GUEST: Blonde On Blonde vocalist/guitarist Dave Thomas. In this epysode, we dive into this Welsh band's 2nd album, Rebirth. Dave Thomas provides detailed background information of the band's formation, their time on the BBC, touring with major acts, their 1969 Isle of Wight performance and the recording of their third and final album when they knew it would be their last. We also discuss Dave's resurgence, decades later ("I signed my second recording contract at the tender age of 70"). Blonde On Blonde mixed folk, psychedelia, blues-rock and prog all into a unique style all their own. It's a great story of a great band and album. I hope you dig "Rebirth" as much as I do. -FJ ==LINKS== 1) Become a Patreon backer for as little as $1/month. This show is completely independent and relies on support from listeners. EPYSODE 08: "Fuchsia", by Fuchsia

EPYSODE 08: "Fuchsia", by Fuchsia
Guest: Fuchsia bandleader Tony Durant. Exeter University, 1971. Hearing classical music played in lunchtime concerts sparks a creative idea for a young student who decides "I can do that!". Corralling 5 classmates, they help develop his uniquely written songs melding rock with classical instrumentation. Together they record a brilliant album that goes completely unnoticed. Without an opportunity to record a follow up, the band split and the album is forgotten...until 40 years later when it makes a suprise comeback re-igniting the career of their songwriter and bandleader, kickstarting an unlikely "Act II" of the Fuchsia story. A fantastic interview with Tony Durant who helps tell the story of this amazing album. I hope you dig Fuchsia as much as I do. -FJ *ERRORS AND OMISSIONS: Tony wanted to ensure that songwriting credit for the song "Me And My Kite" was properly given to Bob Chudley, this was not mentioned in the epysode. EPYSODE 07: "The Fabulous Wailers", by The Wailers
Guest: Wailers guitarist Neil Andersson. In this epysode we go WAY back...all the way to the start of what we now call "Garage Rock". Many music scholars point to The Wailers as being the first true Garage Rock band. My guest Neil Andersson has a very unique perspective on the band. Before he joined, he was a fan! He would play along to Wailers albums having no idea that one day he would have the good fortune to join them. He tells the story about being nervous for his first gig with the band opening for the Everly Brothers in front of 2000 fans...with no rehearsal! The Wailers version of 'Louie Louie' became the template for all others to follow, including the most well known version by the Kingsmen (they even copied the yelp before the solo). These guys even started their own label (as teenagers!) and released the first albums by The Sonics. It's a fascinating story about a fantastic band that was pivotal in influencing so many acts to follow. You like Hendrix's "Spanish Castle Magic"? Thank The Wailers for that too... Note: I used a few seconds of another podcast called "History of Rock Music in 500 Songs", specifically Episode 106 which discusses the history of the song 'Louie Louie'. This episode goes into great detail of this song, providing much more information and insight than I had time to discuss here. I highly recommend this podcast to any music fans, it's excellent. Here is the link to the episode I referenced: My thanks to guest Neil Andersson for taking time to walk down memory lane and talk about his time with this great band. EPYSODE 06: "Heya!", by J.J. Light
Guest: J.J. Light (aka Jim Stallings). In this epysode we hear the tale of how an American artist recorded an album featuring songs about his Navajo background, with the title track becoming a smash hit in Europe...yet inexplicably the record company decided not to release the album in North America. What?!? The album was recorded with a huge budget and had most of The Wrecking Crew as session musicians, which automatically means you are in for a good time. J.J. Light was an artist that should have gone on to more fame and fortune, but as it turns out success was his biggest failure. EPYSODE 05: "Riley, Riley, Wood & Waggett", by Shape Of The Rain

EPYSODE 05: "Riley, Riley, Wood & Waggett", by Shape Of The Rain
Guests: Ian ("Tag") Waggett, Shape of the Rain drummer; David McPhie, Shape of the Rain band manager; with additional audio excerpts used with permission of Keith Riley, Shape of the Rain singer/guitarist/songwriter. In this epysode, we learn how this fantastic UK band was influenced by the West Coast sounds of Love, HP Lovecraft etc. to create a unique sound all their own. With excellent songwriting from band leader Keith Riley, they incorporated 12 string guitars with a pedal steel guitar - very unusual for a psychedelic band to use at that time. Shape of the Rain played with EVERY major band of the day. Only releasing one album in their lifetime, it's the classic tale of a band who had all the components to be major stars. However fate it seems had other plans. A recent reissue of their lone album is a great addition for fans as it includes not only a remastered version of the album, but a plethora of fantastic unreleased tracks plus a complete live album. Buy this today! . A SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT THIS EPYSODE: The Shape of the Rain epysode was completed a few weeks ago. I had intended to release it earlier than this, however on the day before it was set to be published news broke that Keith Riley had passed away. I made the decision to leave the epysode as is, recorded when Keith was still alive. I felt re-editing would take away from the story. Instead I added a short prologue to commemorate Keith's life. He was an extraordinary talent and I can only hope my love for his music comes across in this epysode. I love this band, I love this album and I love Keith's songwriting. RIP Keith, you will be missed. If you have questions, comments or suggestions for future epysodes, I can be reached at . EPYSODE 04: "A Gathering of Promises", by Bubble Puppy
Guest: Bubble Puppy drummer David Fore. In this epysode we learn how this Texan band came swinging right out of the gates with a smokin' hit in 1969. After some unfortunate record company shenanigans they were forced to move to another label and change their name to Demian. One album later and with a promising future ahead, it all falls apart. "It was stupid. Don't ever be in a band!", David said jokingly. My thanks to drummer David Fore for joining the program to talk about his days with this awesome band. David is still recording and performing live. You can see his information at . Also check out his substack if you want to get first-hand accounts of life as a rock 'n' roll star in the late 60's/early 70's. It's a fantasatic read, always informative and entertaining. EPYSODE 03: "Mighty Baby", by Mighty Baby
Guest: Mighty Baby's Ian Whiteman. In this epysode, we hear how the UK mod/soul-inspired band "The Action" - who were produced by none other than George Martin - morphed into "Mighty Baby". Vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Ian Whiteman joins the show to talk about his memories of his days with this fascinating band that is often cited as "England's Grateful Dead" due to the improvisational elements of their live shows, which culminated as the closing act on day one of 1970's famous Isle of Wight festival in front of 600,000 people. "People compared us the Grateful Dead, but not really. We were more structured", Ian said. Ian shares some great stories about his bandmates, the songs and who was influencing them ("The Byrds had a seismic effect"). We do a track analysis, see what the critics had to say and of course we hear from Uncle Herff.
