Names of God (8): al-Muheet, "The Encompassing"
"The All-Encompassing" or al-Muheet is a less discussed of the Qur'anic divine attributes because many traditions/hadith of the devotional "99 Names" and subsequent Sufi commentaries do not include it. Al-Tilimsani, following the incidence of divine names as they appear in the Qur'an, dedicates a discussion of al-Muheet. Adnan and Marc engage in an exploration of the meanings and experiences of encompassing and return to the question of the divine-human relationship and the "jamali" and "jalali" distinction we've been considering in recent names emphasizing divine lordship. What is the relationship between the "Avenging" attribute al-Muntaqim and the ontological, universal "Mercy" of al-Rahman in the experience of "The All-Encompassing", al-Muheet? A phenomenological perspective bears particular fruit as we conclude with al-tlimimsani's quotation of the great North African Sufi Master Abu Madyan, "Whoever speaks of dates without tasting their sweetness in his mouth has not spoken of dates!" His final exhortation in his discussion of al-Muheet is: "So understand this, and you will understand the deepest meanings of the final end through your own tasting and state, not trhough transmitted reports and hearsay!" As ever, we reflect on how the name, the sufi commentaries on the name, might together bring insight to a deeper consideration of our own contemporary material conditions and instrospections spiritually, psychologically, and phenomenologically. Ali Shariati's Red Shi'ism vs Black Shi'ism--Anti-Imperialist Muharram 2
The series The Karbabal Paradigm and Anti-Imperialist Resistance for Muharram addresses the important ideas that helped transform modern Shi'i devotional practice and theology into a revolutionary anti-imperialist force. Often called the ideologist of the Islamic Revolution in 1979, Dr. Shariati's writings and teachings are a fundamental source of anti-imperialist thought from the Global South. In particular he articulated a non-secular but radical and liberatory project that is at the heart of the Axis of Resistance's use of Shi'i values, rituals, and sacred histories as tools of struggle. You could say this episode will begin to delve into the historical reinterpretation of Shariati that gave birth to Shi'i liberation theology. Join me for Day 2/3 of Muharram on this series. Names of God (7): al-Malik, "The King"
In this 7th episode of the Names of God series, Adnan and Marc reflect on al-Malik, the King or Owner, another name or attribute that raises the questions of lordship and servanthood in their intimate, non-dualistic interrelationship and the language of hierarchy in the context of spiritual development and psychological health for humans. Because al-Tlimsani discusses the appearance of al-Malik in the context of its Qur'anic appearance in the opening surah, al-fatiha, as "Master of the Day of Judgment," we discussed the eschatological meanings of the "afterlife" from an experiential understanding in juxtaposition to conventional understandings in Islamicate (and broadly monotheistic) theology. al-Ghazali's definition of "kingship" as being free from need opens up ways of understanding spiritual self-sufficiency or sovereignty in our daily life as a practical absorption of this name spiritually. In a wide ranging conversation about different dimensions of al-Malik, we explore the spiritual, the metaphysical, the political, and the social in contemporary life from both conceptual and experiential approaches for what it means to be human. Why History Matters w/Yakoob Ahmed
his episode could equally be titled "ReOrienting History Islamically". Adnan is joined by historian of late Ottoman history and author of Why History Matters: Reviving Faith Through the Lens of History to talk about Eurocentric historiography and historical consciousness and whether Islamicate history provides alternatives and how global or world history might benefit from a reorientation. This is a crucial question not only for Muslims or scholars of history. It is evident that this history is understood principally through orientalist assumptions and frameworks that propose "western modernity" as the only standard for envisioning sovereign futures. As a result, rethinking and reorienting history is of universal concern and interest for understanding the human and envisioning a future beyond the hegemony of Western imperialist racial capitalism. What can studying not only Islamicate history but history "islamically" contribute to envisioning a just, equitable future for humanity? We'll ask Dr. Yakoob Ahmed and discuss the issues with you, so post your comments and questions! The Names of God (6): al-Rabb, "the Lord and Nourisher"
Adnan and Marc explore the name al-Rabb, which is usually translated at “The Lord” but with elements of educative and nourishing dimensions. Some even translate the name as “Nourisher”. Although this is not one of the 99 names listed in typical devotional traditions, this self-description or name appears early in the Qur’an in its opening chapter, Surah Fatiha, in the verse “Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds.” Al-Tilimsani discusses it, so Marc and I reflected on the themes of Lordship and Servanthood in the psychological and experiential schemes of Sufi understanding of this name as well as our own reflections. As ever, we try to orient our discussion not only around examining the meanings but also the mechanisms of the names for spiritual and psychological development and activation. Also as usual, we find social value as well in the effort to explore the Names in contemporary times. Join us! Myths about Islamic Resistance History in Palestine w/Mujamma Haraket
As part of this channel's effort to explore the theme of religion and resistance and to understand the Islamic resistance confronting US-Israeli empire, Adna speaks with scholar, translator, and historian of Islamic political movements, Mujamma Haraket. We explore the emergence of the Islamic Resistance in Palestine and its roots in anticolonial era and Muslim Brotherhood organizing in previous decades. In particular, Mujamma dispells myths and exposes their particular use to discredit Hamas by examining the source of contentions that Israel created or supported its "as a counterweight" to the secular nationalist PLO movement. This revealing and illuminating historical analysis based on careful assessment of the evidence and documentation. We also discuss the use of collaborationist gangs in Gaza and their Salafist or more properly "Madkhalist" Islamist orientations meant to undermine the resistance. The Qur'an as Geopolitics w/Indi.ca
In this era, the most active forces combating colonialism and imperialism are the “Axis of Resistance” in West Asia. Since October 7th, many have been either inspired or puzzled by the incomparable endurance of the Palestinian people and their heroic resistance to invasion, occupation, and genocidal violence. In both cases religious faith in Islam has proven of incalculable value to them as well as to resistance in Yemen, Lebanon, and Iran. Adnan speaks with writer, blogger and co-host of Resistance is Fertile Podcast, Indi (at Indi.ca) about his study of the Qur’an, Muslim scripture, as a way of understanding the Islamic resistance and current events. Although not a Muslim, he frequently cites the Qur’an in his own anti-imperialist writings and analysis as a source for understanding. A Call for Revolutionary Intellectual Alignment w/Dr. Ghassan Abu Sittah
Full Audio of YT Livestream: This livestream collaboration with Lara Sheehi and Psychic Militancy discusses an important document "Toward a Revolutionary Charter for Comprehensive Liberation" released recently that takes an adamant and uncompromising critique of contemporary Arab intelligentsias and calls for a radical realignment against colonial knowledges and with the masses. This is a critical juncture in West Asia; the convulsions of the Gaza genocide, the war on Iran, and the reshaping of its political boundaries, economies and societies in violent colonial war and resistance demand that all social groupings and classes address themselves to revolutionary anticolonial struggle. Lara and I speak with one of the authors of this radical manifesto, Dr. Ghassan Abu Sittah, the famous Palestinian surgeon, academic, activist, and Rector of Glasgow University in Scotland. We'll take up the questions of why "pessimism of the intellect" has not been accompanied by "optimist of the will" among the intellectual classes, the manifestations of "defeatist" and comprador thought, and how to revive the courageous role of intellectuals organically in the people's struggle as a resource for liberation. Centered on the question of Palestine but addressed to the wider Arab peoples confronting Zionism, colonialism, and imperialism, the conversation will explore the document's six key principles and concepts like rooted knowledge, intellectual sovereignty, democratizing knowledge and how ideology can be turned into a material force for liberation. Iran War Diary (Day 35)
This is a collaborative episode with podcast hosted by Kumars Salehi. He has graciously let us post the episode with guest previously on the program for the episode "Iran under Siege". Here is the Delete Your Account write up: This week’s episode is a collaboration with The Colony Archive and The Adnan Husain Show. As Roqayah continues to report from the front lines of Israel’s assault on south Lebanon, Kumars is joined by returning guest Navid Zarrinnal and debutante Adnan Husain. The gang discusses President Masoud Pezeskhian’s letter to Americans, Javad Zarif’s ceasefire proposal in Foreign Affairs, the Iranian government’s response to the mass displacement caused by US-Israeli bombing, the history of Western opposition to Iranian development, relations between the Islamic Republics of Iran and Pakistan, whether the war will ultimately push the Gulf states out of the imperialist orbit, and what it could mean for Iran to become a global power. Iran at War: Sovereignty against Empire Helyeh Doutaghi
Adnan speaks with anti-imperialist legal scholar and journalist Dr. Helyeh Doutaghi, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Tehran and contributer to Vocal Politics, about life in Iran during the Ramadan War, revolutionary Shi'i populism that has been galvanized nightly in the streets, forms of social solidarity and social order in response to US-Israeli civilian attacks, and the centrality of Palestine and the decolonization of the region. A fascinating discussion with Helyeh's first hand observations and thoroughly insightful analysis. This is illuminating and inspiring! Thanks to Breht for the invitation and graciously allowing us to repost here. Check out his amazing, long-running podcast: and on all the usual platforms. The conversation traces the arc from ancient Persia to the Islamic era, explores how Iran became a center of Shi’a Islam, and examines the long rivalry between Persian and Ottoman power. Along the way, they unpack the Sunni-Shia split, the political role of Turkey in the region, the ways Western narratives about Islam were forged through the Crusades and carried forward into the modern world, Zionist Expansionism, and the ongoing illegal war of aggression waged by the U.S. and Israel against Iran, and indeed, the whole region. The Names of God (5)-al-Raheem, "the Compassionate"
After too long a hiatus, Dr. Marc Applebaum and I have returned with the fifth episode in our series on the Names of God, centered around the Sufi mystical tradition of the 99 Names. This episode comes at the end of Ramadan and arrives into a world desperately in need of mercy, compassion, empathy. Following closely from its relation to al-Rahman, "the Merciful", in our last episode, this name opens further spiritual vistas. We examine some of these resonances and motifs and engage the discussions of al-Ghazali and al-Tilimsani in connecting our own experience and reflections on al-Raheem. Iran vs. Epstein Empire w/David Yaghoubian & Resistance is Fertile
Adnan convenes another extra emergency livestream Sunday March 1st 8pmET--this time in collaboration with Resistance is Fertile Podcast-- on the regional war in West Asia that "Epstein Empire" has launched against Iran and the people of the region. We take a broad approach in situating this in the Gaza genocide sponsored by the West through the Zionist state of Israel confronted by the Axis of Resistance. We will examine the geopolitical and strategic situation on the second day of the illegal imperialist attack as well as analysis of global dimesions and ramifications within the imperial core. I will be joined by Dr. David Yaghoubian, friend and supporter of the show and historian of modern Iran and the Middle East at CS-San Bernardino, and the Resistance is Fertile co-hosts, Benji and Indica. It will be a great panel to answer your questions, respond to your comments, and take up your suggested topics. Join us for this continuing series! Iran under Siege w/Navid Zarrinnal (The Colony Archive)
Adnan has a fascinating conversation with Dr. Navid Zarrinnal, a historian of modern Iran, who also speaks from first hand experience from inside Iran about current conditions economically and socially, as well as providing keen political and historical analysis of the internal support for Iran's foreign policy and the divisions between elite and Western-oriented "neo-liberal" classes and factions and the majority of average working and middle class people who have suffered most under sanctions. Navid provides insight into the resistance of the Iranian people to empire and their resolve and reframes the question of Iran in close connection to Palestine as a cause of justice. He appeals for us in the "imperial core" to demand justice for Iran and an end to sanctions. No War is not enough! Taking ACTION for PALESTINE w/Huda Ammori

Taking ACTION for PALESTINE w/Huda Ammori
Exclusive extended conversation w/Huda Ammori, co-founder of Palestine Action, about the recent High Court decision in favor of her suit against the Home Secretary and Starmer government banning Palestine Action under the Terrorism Act of 2000. In addition to analyzing the decision and the political ramifications of this momentous victory—the first time a suit has been successful against the application of the act against a group, Huda related the direct action group’s successes against Israeli military corporation, Elbit Systems, and the financial and commercial infrastructure that enables it in the UK. We also discuss the legal battles and success with jury trials as well as repression by the state culminating in the ban. This is an incredibly illuminating conversation about resistance in solidarity with Palestine in the imperial core with a courageous and determined hero (along with her incredible and committed actionists and the movement they have built). Full of insights and inspiration, you want to learn from these experiences. Free Palestine! Follow Huda on X: We also ask you to support the Sameer Project.
