Venus Club goes to ‘dark places’ on dreamy new EP (Episode 1075)
I’m joined by Emilie and Josh from Venus Club — they’re a dark wave Chicago band that I absolutely adore. The new EP, Extended, is dreamy, haunting, and well positioned for your autumnal listening pleasure. We met in a south side parking lot, as people do, and chatted about their sound, their drunken origin story (subject to debate?), Ace of Base’s oeuvre, and they joys of physical media. Gina Barcal is ‘Midwest ‘til the End’ (Episode 1074)
“I could barely stop from grinnin’, and I’m sorry, Jesus, but tonight I’m sinnin’” Gina Barcal has moved away from her punk and indie roots (Venom Lords, Pillowmints, etc.) to create a solo EP of authentic, no-kidding, Americana songs. “Midwest ‘til the End” comes out on November 7, followed by a show at Fitzgeralds Sidebar on November 8. Well before that, Gina jumped in the car to talk about how her career has led her to these sounds and this moment, her muse (a “Midwest boy with calloused hands), how her parents are remembered on the EP, and whether the song “Whiskey Don’t Fail Me Now” is true-to-life. Never mind the existential dread, here’s Alexis Plaen (Episode 1073)
Alexis Plaen releases her sharp, conceptual, and beautifully constructed pop debut, “Enjoy the Void,” on 10/10/25. In advance of that, she joined me for a conversation in Avondale that covered: *The pervasive album themes of existential dread and finding oneself *The devastating (and perhaps suspect) house fire that changed everything for her *The variety of styles and approaches to her music *The trouble with TikTok *The hauntingly accurate and memorable lyric, “Too bad a funeral’s cheaper than a hospital” If you haven’t yet heard Alexis’s music or watched her videos, I think you’ll be impressed by how accomplished it all is. Truly a striking DIY debut. Car Con Carne is sponsored by Easy Automation: Looking to transform your home, office, or business into a smart, seamlessly connected space? Broken Robots meet challenge of ‘The Great American Struggle’ (Episode 1072)
I’m out of the car for this one, joining Broken Robots (Kat, Tony, Elix, Anthony, Ari) in the band’s Logan Square home studio for a long overdue conversation. The chat lands days before the release (9/12) of what is arguably their finest moment, “The Great American Struggle.” We talk at length about the meaning and construction of the songs and how they all fit together. It was important to frame the album’s completion around how the band has dealt with dramatic blows over the past few years, the most dramatic and impactful being Tony’s cancer diagnosis and his inspirational fight to come out on top. True to form, Tony discusses the topic with transparency and sincerity. Not to spoil any of the details, but it’s important to keep doing the things that inspire you, no matter what kind of hand life deals you. See Broken Robots in their album release show at LiveWire on 9/12, and be sure to stream/buy/consume “The Great American Struggle” upon its release. Cinematic, avant garde, band Friend of a Friend eats tacos (Episode 1071)
Friend of a Friend is the brilliant and inventive musical group powered by Claire Molek and Jason Savsani. Their third album, “Desire!,” came out earlier this year, and it’s moody, atmospheric, at-times unnerving, and gorgeous. I love it. They joined me outside Tacos El Tio in Oak Park (1115 Lake Street) for a conversation about their history, “Desire,” and the incredibly spooky place where the album was recorded. Befriend Friend of a Friend. I think you’re going to love them. ‘If NPR’s Tiny Desk grew up, got day-drunk, and moved to the South Side’ - Wonderlick (Episode 1070)
I’m joined for this episode by two guys who spent decades turning a smart, biting sense of humor into underground, DIY favorites as part of Too Much Joy, and later… Wonderlick. We talked during the pandemic about Too Much Joy in a standard COVID-era “Zoom” chat… and this time around, I met Tim Quirk and Jay Blumenfield in person. We met at the wonderful Blue Island Beer Company, where the band was set to play later in the evening. Sitting outside on a perfect Chicago weather day, we chatted about: -The differences between Too Much Joy and Wonderlick -The new album, “Wonderlick Goes to War” -Tim’s obsessiveness about… everything? -Why is there a documentary crew following them around everywhere? -What the studio sessions were like for this album -What being a musician is like in 2025, as opposed to Too Much Joy’s heyday -The Chicago connection to the new Wonderlick album -Vinko Bogotaj: Who was he? Why does Wonderlick have a song about him? -There’s a major Too Much Joy reissue on the way! See Wonderlick on tour, and give “Wonderlick Goes to War” a listen. They’re awesome. Comedian Kristen Toomey heads to Apple TV with new special (Episode 1066)
This interview was a long time in the making – four years, to be exact – and that gets explained early in the show. In short, I sent an SOS to the world, and comedian Kristen Toomey received it. We met in Bensenville (home of Victory Auto Wreckers!) for a fun, smart, sharp conversation covering the art and science of being a working comic today, why she threw her phone out the window a few years back, social media, the time she was arrested as a teen, and why poly people were quite cross with her. I loved meeting and chatting with Kristen, and hope to make it a more regular occurrence on the podcast! Support Kristen by watching her special, “Shriller,” debuting on Apple TV on August 12! ## Looking to transform your home, office, or business into a smart, seamlessly connected space? Lucky Boys Confusion announces opening act ‘live’ on CCC (Episode 1061)
Lucky Boys Confusion returns to the House of Blues on 11/15/25 for The Soapbox Spectacle Vinyl Release Show. As I type this, the show is pretty much sold out, meaning if you waited on tickets, you may kick yourself early on during the listening of this episode. Stubhy from Lucky Boys Confusion is back on the show to reveal LBC’s opening act - and the lead singer is also in the episode (hidden off-screen until the reveal)! The last Lucky Boys Confusion show at HOB was one of their all-time best - can’t wait for November! To help the conversation along, we’re joined by Bill Thanoukos of Hub’s (3727 W. Dempster). I’ve been going to Hub’s since I was a kid, so it was super fun to talk with Bill about Hub’s history (since 1976!) while eating their legendary gyros. Pay Bill a visit and order the gyros (that tzatziki sauce!). Or the ribs. Or just order whatever moves you … you honestly can’t go wrong. ## Looking to transform your home, office, or business into a smart, seamlessly connected space? Gird your loins: The new Daisychain album rips (Episode 1056)
Nickole Regala, Sophia Williams, and Frankie Sripada of the bluesy, psychedelic, raw and authentic, band Daisychain join me for a chat just days before their album release show (6/20) at Sleeping Village and a week in advance of the release of the new album, “All in a Name.” This one was recorded outside local treasure Reed’s Local in Avondale, and we talked about: -The just-concluded tour, and the problematic hotel bathroom they had to negotiate around. -Their reverence for 70s sounds - don’t confuse it for a rubber stamp appreciation for all of that decade’s bullshit. -Frankie’s preparatory loin-girding. -Does a band that sounds like it was made for vinyl appreciate vinyl? -Recording with the iconic Sylvia Massey. -The new songs, loaded with everything from garage rock realness to Rush-inspired prog moments. -The song “G String”: Is it about a guitar string or underpants? -The “slam dunk” on the new album. -Why antique malls rule. See and support Daisychain at Sleeping Village on 6/20! Can’t make it? Buy (or at least stream) the album on 6/27! ## Looking to transform your home, office, or business into a smart, seamlessly connected space? Taste of Randolph preview with Spitalfield at Hide+Seek (Episode 1055)

Taste of Randolph preview with Spitalfield at Hide+Seek (Episode 1055)
returns this weekend (June 13-15) for its 28th year! The event happens at ground zero for food in Chicago: Randolph Street, between Peoria and Racine. To preview this year’s event, I sat down with Julie Darling (West Loop Community Organization President) at Hide+Seek (838 W. Randolph), a standout Randolph St. restaurant that offers a “creative American shared plates menu (incorporating) touches from Spain, France, and Italy.” Also joining in the conversation are Mark Rose, frontman for Spitalfield, the band headlining the Q101 PIQNIQ Stage (West Stage) on Saturday night. We talk about the band’s new music (Play+Record) - the first new songs we’ve heard from them in a very, very long time. I say it in the interview, but it’s worth repeating in this space: “I Can’t Stop” may be the most hooky song Mark’s ever written. As a bonus, we’re also joined by Sean Mulroney. Not only is he the owner of Double Door (new location opening in 2026), he’s also in One for The Ditch, who are playing the PIQNIQ stage on Saturday afternoon! We had amazing food and a fantastic conversation. See you this weekend on Randolph St. - wear sensible shoes and sunscreen. ## Looking to transform your home, office, or business into a smart, seamlessly connected space? Wrestling music, Night Spice and Flowers for Dorian: go-to drummer Marc Esses (Episode 1054)
This episode sees the return of drummer, Mark Esses, who's behind the kit for many bands including Downstait, Night Spice and Flowers for Dorian. We met at El Vado, a Mexican restaurant in McHenry, and we chatted about: Balancing Multiple Projects: Besides being the drummer in a bunch of bands, Mark Esses also keeps busy as a D.J. We talk about how he manages his time and creative energy across all these endeavors. Pro Wrestling Music: Mark shares the story of how he was recruited into Downstait after the singer saw him perform and they bonded over a shared love of pro wrestling. We dig into the process of creating entrance themes for wrestlers and Mark's passion for the sport. Band Dynamics: We touch on the 20th anniversary of his band Flowers for Dorian and the longevity of band relationships. Mark also mentions the story-driven concept behind his band Night Spice, which even has an accompanying comic book. The Creative Drive & Collecting: While eating tacos during a sudden downpour, we bond over the "collector's mindset." I talk about my record collection, while Mark talks about his passion for collecting Batman, wrestling, and other pop culture memorabilia, including a story about having to start his collection over after a flood. Marc has a lot going on, and we barely scratched the surface! Support his projects at marcesses.com! ## Looking to transform your home, office, or business into a smart, seamlessly connected space? Danimal Farm takes artistic residence in ‘Perseverance Hotel’ (Episode 1053)
Danimal Farm is a solo project created by singer/guitarist Danny Doom, formerly of Milk at Midnight. The album, “Perseverance Hotel,” is a comfortable, sometimes dark, collection of shimmering indie rock and indie pop songs that have stuck with me since the album’s February release. Danny Doom joins me to talk about the project, along with band members Stephanie and Clay. We talk about Doom’s decision to do a solo project after the end of Milk at Midnight, why the original plan to deliver love songs fell apart, and … why the Who’s “Quadrophenia” album still holds up. See Danimal Farm at Montrose Saloon on June 21 - it’s an early matinee show! Looking to transform your home, office, or business into a smart, seamlessly connected space? Malört made impossibly worse by Noon Whistle Brewing (Episode 1052)
Almost exactly one year ago, I visited Noon Whistle’s Lombard Brewpub (800 E. Roosevelt) to understand why they were serving cicada-infused Malort. Sure enough, they got me again. Garlic Butterlört has arrived. In the brewery’s promotional copy, it’s described as “bringing big ‘better ingredients, questionable decisions’ energy. Rich, buttery goodness meets roasted garlic and herbs, with that unmistakable bitter kick that says, ‘maybe I do want another slice or just literally anything to get this taste out of my mouth.’ “It’s smooth. It’s garlicky. It’s bold. And yes—it’s the ultimate pizza crust dipper. You’ve had the garlic butter cup... but it's time to grow up little one. Garlic Butterlört is here, and it didn’t come to play. Don't ask for the parm rim.” Obviously, there’s a lot more to talk about when it comes to Noon Whistle after ten years of business, serving both the Naperville and Lombard communities. For this episode, I’m back at Noon Whistle with my spirit animal, Marketing Director Joey Giardiniera, to talk about Noon Whistle’s latest alcoholic chimera and all the other things, specifically: -Noon Whistle's unique beer offerings, including the new collab with the Morton Arboretum. -Connecting with younger demographics as so much of the talk lately is on how 20-somethings aren’t drinking like their elders once did. -Lower ABV: Is it the new battleground? -The amazing food at Noon Whistle, specifically their pizzas. -Events at Noon Whistle: Should I host a music trivia night? ## Looking to transform your home, office, or business into a smart, seamlessly connected space? Comedian Kevin Kellam welcomes you to ‘Kevin and Hell’ (Episode 1051)
I’m joined by comedian/radio host/wrestling journalist/former radio colleague Kevin Kellam, who’s recording a comedy album on stage at Lincoln Hall on August 9. We met outside the Brewed in Logan Square for a Sunday morning conversation that covered everything from the comedy album taping to Q101 philosophy. There’s also a detailed discussion on the time I walked through human excrement, if that happens to be your thing. I had a lot of fun recording with Kevin; be sure to catch him at Lincoln Hall! Bellhead follows up on earlier promises with ‘Threats’ (Episode 1049)
Bellhead (Karen Righeimer and Ivan Russia) is a favorite of mine. The post-punk duo continues to take massive evolutionary steps forward with each new release; the new EP, “Threats,” is their finest moment yet. Rather than meet in my car, I invited Bellhead over to do an interview in my backyard (they’re like family at this point). My fire pit was a bit … suffocating … as we chatted, but we still managed to have a great chat. To make sure the conversation flowed, Karen brought samples of her homemade mead for us to enjoy as we sat out in the 50-degree Midwestern spring weather. Best bootlegged booze I’ve had in ages. We talked about the new EP, Spinal Tap, steampunk, the reality of touring, running into Martin Atkins (Pigface, PiL) in an unlikely place, whether this is their “Americana” moment, and some of the “Threats” reviews so far. If you’re new to Bellhead, this is a great way to jump in. If you’re just a fan of musicians being authentic, candid and fun, you’re also going to love this episode. ## Car Con Carne sponsored by Easy Automation: easy-automation.net Transform your living space with cutting-edge home automation. Greek food, Glenview culture, metal AF: Stavros from Atlas Moth returns (Episode 1045)
Stavros from the Atlas Moth is back for his 4th appearance on Car Con Carne - it’s been over four years, so we were overdue for a chat. The first thing you may notice in this episode is how easy the conversation is between the two of us. Besides Stavros being a natural and funny conversationalist, we have a lot in common: music, comics, horror, vinyl collecting. Lots of common ground there. We talk about why the Atlas Moth has been dead silent for the past five years, and Stavros reveals the plans for an upcoming covers EP. You won’t believe the artists they’re covering! We also talk about Stavros’s new band, Motherless, set to release an album in September. The entire conversation took place at the unlucky-looking Talisman Center in Glenview, specifically outside the Works Grill, home of some of the area’s best gyros (no lie). This chat’s a little longer than usual, but I swear it’s a fun one. Thanks for checking it out! ## Car Con Carne sponsored by Easy Automation: easy-automation.net Transform your living space with cutting-edge home automation.
