Guest host Jacques LaMore chats with Guardrail frontman Kevin Andrew (Episode 1099)
Guest host Jake “Jacques” LaMore, formerly of Pop-Punk & Pizza, now the voice behind new narrative storytelling podcast, “This One Time in Kankakee”, sits down for a conversation with Kevin Andrew, the lead vocalist of Chicago’s diet punk band, Guardrail. The two discuss: -Kevin’s recent wedding -How their bands used to play shows together -The meaning behind the group’s new single, “Heroes”, now streaming everywhere -The upcoming ten anniversary of their yearly benefit show, Snuzfest ### Jake did an incredible job - and his mic/audio quality are tops (I notice this stuff). I’m incredibly grateful that he was willing to jump behind the mic to talk punk rock on behalf of CCC. And thanks of course to Kevin for again agreeing to have the world’s premiere diet punk band featured on the podcast. -JVO ### Car Con Carne is nominated for “Best Music Podcast” in the Chicago Reader’s “Best of Chicago” survey (https://chicagoreader.com/best-of-chicago-music-nightlife-2025/). 2025 Revisited with James VanOsdol (Episode 1098)
I’m back for a special end-of-the-year episode! Watch/listen for a handful of memorable highlights from 2025, including two especially wonderful musical performances. As I explain early in this episode, this is in no way meant to be considered a “best of.” With over 80 episodes recorded this year, it would be impossible to pull something like that together (and incredibly unfair to my guests). Consider this an “amuse-bouche” for the podcast; a hint of what made it so much fun to host this year and a promise of more to come in 2026. Thank you to all my guests (who are each individually named in this episode), and to you for supporting the podcast. I appreciate you. -James Car Con Carne is nominated for “Best Music Podcast” in the Chicago Reader’s “Best of Chicago” survey (https://chicagoreader.com/best-of-chicago-music-nightlife-2025/). Drainage tubes, the colorectal surgeon, appendicitis and me (Episode 1094)
Hi. It’s me. James VanOsdol. As my recent (and forthcoming) guest hosts continue to kill it, I’m finally in a physical and emotional place where I can check in and let you know everything that’s been going on with me. This isn’t a traditional episode - it didn’t make sense to read sponsor tags or play the theme song - instead, it’s a full recounting of all the medical stuff going on with me since October. Thank you for your continued support! As I mention toward the end, while I haven’t always been able to respond to all my messages, I’ve read them all and they mean a great deal to me.

Welcome to the Family Business: Fiona VanOsdol guest-hosts (Episode 1093)
As I continue to recover from a variety of appendix-related issues, I’m turning to capable and talented guest hosts to keep Car Con Carne running. This episode offers something a little bit different: It features the podcast-hosting debut of my daughter, Fiona VanOsdol. Joining her are her college friends Faith Ferry and Fionn Riley, co-hosts of her college radio show called “The F Word” (their names all start with “F,” and they talk about topics that start with “F”). Their topic for this episode is “food,” which pretty much drives home the fact that Fiona’s my daughter. Among the food-related topics discussed: * Dining hall food, and its potential health risks. * Thanksgiving foods - tater tots on green bean casserole is a thing? * Fiona’s second attempt at constructing a Jell-O dessert. * Favorite restaurants - let’s have more buffets (or not)! Also, what’s the best thing to order from Panda Express? Chili’s? * Fiona shares a dark sandwich moment from our shared history (she calls it “James lore”). Thanks for supporting Car Con Carne, especially during this weird period where I’m off the grid. Thank you for listening and watching - I had an especially fun time handing the show over to Fiona. ## Car Con Carne is sponsored by Easy Automation: If you’re looking to transform your home, office, or business into a smart, seamlessly connected space, Easy Automation delivers custom automation solutions that are tailored to your lifestyle. As I continue to recover (and prepare for a couple of procedures and impending surgery) from appendix issues, I’ve excitedly turned Car Con Carne over to guest hosts. Their guest is a post-punk legend, entrepreneur, author, and museum founder: the infamous Martin Atkins (Pigface, NIN, PiL). They recorded at Martin’s Museum of Post Punk and Industrial Music (natch) and discuss (among other things): *Martin’s decision to perform Killing Joke’s “Extremities” in its entirety for the first time in 33 years at Reggies Rock Room on November 28th and 29th *The cast of characters invited to take on this endeavor *Martin’s early days with Killing Joke, including how some of the “Extremities” songs came to life. *The creation of PPIM and updates, and why you should come visit. Guest host Kevin Kellam talks about the 90s with author Greg Prato (Episode 1090)
Hello from James VanOsdol. As I type this, I’m recovering from appendix-related issues and preparing for an appendectomy just before Christmas. I’m counting it as a holiday gift. Bottom line: I’m not able to get out and record the podcast in-person or at my usual pace at the moment. When I first announced that I had been hospitalized (twice!) for a perforated appendix, I had a few kind friends offer to step in and guest host Car Con Carne in my expected absence. The first person to suggest the idea is friend and former radio colleague Kevin Kellam (Q101). I told him to go nuts and do whatever he wanted, and he killed it. For this episode, he interviews author/rock journalist Greg Prato, whose work has been seen in major publications like Rolling Stone and Classic Rock. He’s also the author of dozens (!) of books, including the focus of this conversation, Alternative for the Masses: The '90s Alt-Rock Revolution - An Oral History. Greg knows his stuff, and if you have any interest in the 90s (I mean, who doesn’t ?), you’re going to love this chat with Greg and Kevin. Thanks for supporting Car Con Carne, especially during this weird period where I’m off the grid. Please support the podcast’s guest hosts (listen to Kevin on Q101; buy Greg’s books)! Folk-punk troubadour Sam Russo takes huge leap forward on ‘Hold You Hard’ (Episode 1089)
Sam Russo put out his fourth album (“Hold You Hard”) a few months ago and is currently touring the states in a run-up to the Fest in Gainesville later this month. The new album was written across America, and feels like the result of travels that were well, if not thoughtfully, spent. Sam jumped in my car in front of GMan to talk about the new album, video-making, songwriting, and a shared love for horror films. As I mentioned in a recent social post, Sam is one of the most genuine, authentic souls I've come across in my decades of interviewing musicians. He speaks, writes, and performs with unflinching sincerity and rawness … his new album is a wonderful leap forward for him as an artist - highly recommended. From the Kinetic Playground to the Park West: The 55+ year journey of Chicago legends the Flock (Episode 1088)
The Flock was making noise on a national level starting back during the Nixon administration. They were unorthodox for the time: Jazz. Prog. Rock. Fusion. A little bit of everything, all masterfully played by the individual band members. They put out a few major label albums in their prime (Columbia, Mercury) … then, just as quickly as they came onto the scene, they faded away. Fast forward to the present: The Flock had a reunion show at Ravinia in 2024, and will return next month for a headlining show at Park West on Saturday, November 1st. Jerry Smith (bass/vocals) from the Flock joins me on the northwest side for this episode to talk about the band’s remarkable history (your jaw will drop at how many legendary bands they shared stages and experiences with) and what the present day vision is for Park West and beyond. This chat is true Chicago (and classic rock) history, told by a guy who’s seen and done it all. I think you’re really going to appreciate it. Hope to see you at Park West on 11/1! ## Looking to transform your home, office, or business into a smart, seamlessly connected space? Noon Whistle: ‘Who wants chili-infused Malort?’ Everyone: ___ (Episode 1085)
I’m back at Noon Whistle’s Lombard Brewpub (800 E. Roosevelt) for this one. They’ve pulled me back with yet another mad scientist idea. I’ve had cicada-infused Malort there. I choked down Garlic Butterlort, still an all-time low taste experience. And now, I’m back for a Car Con Carne collaboration of sorts: Malort Con Carne, which is Malort infused with… chili. I’m joined once again by Marketing Director Joey Giardiniera for a twisted odyssey into spirits and mix-ins. We don’t bury the lede on this one - we get right to trying it. As far as good drinks go, I loved the Festbier I had on this visit. Noon Whistle’s line of beers ranges from “brilliant at the basics” through, “Oh, I need to know what that tastes like.” You really can’t go wrong there. And yes, have a pizza when you’re there. They absolutely kill it with their food menu. Car Con Carne is sponsored by Easy Automation: Looking to transform your home, office, or business into a smart, seamlessly connected space? HellsGate Haunted House with clubdrugs (Episode 1084)
It’s my favorite time of year - I’m back at Hellsgate Haunted House in Lockport to see what’s new at the haunt and meet up with creator/owner John LaFlamboy. Joining me for the trip this year are two of my favorite people: John and Maria of the synthy, edgy, glorious gothpop duo clubdrugs. Get tickets at hellsgate.com - Thursday-Sundays through the 19th, then Wednesday through Sunday starting on the 22nd. It’s a must-visit every year, and you wouldn’t be wrong to visit more than once per season. John and Maria were the perfect first-time HellsGate visitors, and became instant, lifetime fans. They observed and appreciated nuances that only superfans would recognize, and it was fun to hear them share their thoughts and questions with John LaFlamboy. John LaFlamboy shared what’s new for HellsGate this year (the biggest and best example is the mausoleum - OMG). He also talked about the business of running a haunt; specifically the good that can come from failing. John from clubdrugs picked up on the subcultural, community vibe that HellsGate creates, much to John LaFlamboy’s appreciation. And it’s true: When you’re at HellsGate, there’s a special, unique-to-that-world, feeling of belonging from start to finish. My annual CCC visit to HellsGate is something I look forward to each year, and I always appreciate John LaFlamboy’s insights and creativity. Having my super-creative friends in clubdrugs join in the fun for this episode made for an absolutely exceptional evening and podcast experience. Speaking of clubdrugs: They dropped a major band announcement toward the end of the show. Not to spoil it, but… they just signed a record deal and new music is imminent! Bass Drum of Death at Beat Kitchen (Episode 1082)
Bass Drum of Death was back in Chicago on 9/24/25 for a show at Beat Kitchen, and I sat down with John Barrett (singer/multi-instrumentalist) shortly before he took the stage. We talked about: *Chicago, and the band’s “Live and Let Die” album that was recorded at Cobra Lounge. *The new album, “Six,” a fuzzy, garage rock, banger. *What major lifestyle change has freed John up while on tour? *The pervasive influence of ZZ Top. *What does rock and roll mean to John? Not in Chicago? You may still have a chance to see the band while they’re on tour this Fall! Highly recommended! The Pulsars return! (Episode 1080)
“This is a very nice day, yeah. Hugs and kisses all the way to Wisconsin” Not to bury the lead: synthy, new wavey, indie rock favorites, the Pulsars are back and moving forward. Full disclosure: I love this band and have waited decades to hear what band leader Dave Trumfio had to say on this podcast episode. The Pulsars will be releasing more music. They’ll be touring. They’re continuing all the good things they started in the 20th century. Dave is a music genius, whether he’s in front of the Pulsars or behind the console producing other artists like Wilco, Dogstar, My Morning Jacket, and OK GO. I was elated to catch back up with him after a very long time, and can’t wait so see what he has in store for the Pulsars. We talked about the band’s Harvey Danger cover, their status as “world’s greatest band,” the latest on their next (ska-free) album, and our plans to record a podcast in the band’s van. Live at Legit Dogs + Ice (Episode 1069)

Live at Legit Dogs + Ice (Episode 1069)
This episode had a long, strange journey. Recorded at Legit Dogs + Ice in South Elgin less than 48 hours before the restaurant closed for good, this episode features guests Lollygagger, Coyote Man, flowersatherfeet, Chris Baker from Ink 180 and Brennan Weaver/Phil Lisiecki of Wild Dogs Comedy. The recording started an hour later than scheduled, due to house audio problems I still don’t understand. Adding to the weird, “closing forever,” vibes was having to watch people leave the room because they didn’t want to wait any longer for the show to begin. And yet… the guests were fantastic. When I do events like this, the interviewees all give their time and energy to be part of the podcast. No money changes hands; it’s all for the love of the game. Each guest delivered in every possible way, and I’m incredibly grateful for their presence. Back to the strange journey … the sound guy told me I’d have the produced audio from the episode within two weeks of the 8/22/25 recording date. At the two week mark, I emailed asking for an update. He told me he wasn’t interested in working on the files, he had walked away from the project, and I’d need to get the audio from one of Legit Dogs’ investors. Of course, it would have been lovely for him to have told me that on the night of the show, or even in the subsequent two weeks. Alas… That led to me to meeting the investor in Schaumburg on 9/13, who handed over a hard drive with several files. When I opened up the hard drive, I realized the evening’s recordings were captured in Logic Pro, a program I don’t own, and that is cost-prohibitive to pay for (especially for a one-time use). Luckily, Logic Pro offers a 90-day trial, which I signed up for simply to open the 24-track recording. It’s worth noting at this point that I’ve never mixed live audio like this before, particularly live music performances. I’d like to apologize to the bands for your songs ending up in my unprofessional hands. This obviously wasn’t the way things were supposed to go down. We had a sound guy on board, but he completely bailed on everything. Once in Logic Pro, I exported all 24 tracks as Wav files so I could load them into the digital editor I normally use. After the export finished, I tried to load the tracks into my editor, but that move kept crashing my computer. After a few frustrating hours, I took a piecemeal approach - I loaded in the specific tracks for each individual segment (e.g. band interview, performance, stage announcement) and exported those as I went. Some of the raw spoken word audio sounded like hot garbage, so I did my best to salvage it with AI - admittedly, it doesn’t sound the way I’d like it to, but it’s more usable than it was. Once I had the audio files produced for each of the segments, I then went through the super challenging task of synchronizing the audio to the video. With very limited exception, the video was captured without audio, so it wasn’t possible to auto sync those files. It was a laborious, manual effort. Two other “Easter eggs” found in the live files: My outro/thank yous after Lollygagger weren’t recorded, so I couldn’t include them here. Also, the recording inexplicably stopped during the second flowersherfeet song, only to be picked back up 10 minutes later. In short, this was an unnecessarily challenging episode to put together, and I regret showcasing my guests in anything less than a super favorable light. A few more notes: Due to music publishing concerns, no music performance was included in the audio episode version. I included one song from each artist in the video episode version. Both songs performed by each bands are available as individual YouTube files. Brennan Weaver’s comedy set is absolutely NSFW. I didn’t include a lot of the Legit Dogs-specific content here. Not out of disrespect, but more because it’s been a month since the restaurant has closed, and the details are already dated. Thanks to Matt, Jenn, Curt, and Jennifer for all their support. Sorry to see a good thing come to an untimely end. The lighting on the main camera totally sucks. Not a show-stopper, but I’m aware that the stage left/stage right footage looked better. Thanks again to Lollygagger, Coyote Man, flowersatherfeet, Chris Baker from Ink 180 and Brennan Weaver/Phil Lisiecki of Wild Dogs Comedy. Gina Barcal is ‘Midwest ‘til the End’ (Episode 1074)
“I could barely stop from grinnin’, and I’m sorry, Jesus, but tonight I’m sinnin’” Gina Barcal has moved away from her punk and indie roots (Venom Lords, Pillowmints, etc.) to create a solo EP of authentic, no-kidding, Americana songs. “Midwest ‘til the End” comes out on November 7, followed by a show at Fitzgeralds Sidebar on November 8. Well before that, Gina jumped in the car to talk about how her career has led her to these sounds and this moment, her muse (a “Midwest boy with calloused hands), how her parents are remembered on the EP, and whether the song “Whiskey Don’t Fail Me Now” is true-to-life. Never mind the existential dread, here’s Alexis Plaen (Episode 1073)
Alexis Plaen releases her sharp, conceptual, and beautifully constructed pop debut, “Enjoy the Void,” on 10/10/25. In advance of that, she joined me for a conversation in Avondale that covered: *The pervasive album themes of existential dread and finding oneself *The devastating (and perhaps suspect) house fire that changed everything for her *The variety of styles and approaches to her music *The trouble with TikTok *The hauntingly accurate and memorable lyric, “Too bad a funeral’s cheaper than a hospital” If you haven’t yet heard Alexis’s music or watched her videos, I think you’ll be impressed by how accomplished it all is. Truly a striking DIY debut. Car Con Carne is sponsored by Easy Automation: Looking to transform your home, office, or business into a smart, seamlessly connected space? Broken Robots meet challenge of ‘The Great American Struggle’ (Episode 1072)
I’m out of the car for this one, joining Broken Robots (Kat, Tony, Elix, Anthony, Ari) in the band’s Logan Square home studio for a long overdue conversation. The chat lands days before the release (9/12) of what is arguably their finest moment, “The Great American Struggle.” We talk at length about the meaning and construction of the songs and how they all fit together. It was important to frame the album’s completion around how the band has dealt with dramatic blows over the past few years, the most dramatic and impactful being Tony’s cancer diagnosis and his inspirational fight to come out on top. True to form, Tony discusses the topic with transparency and sincerity. Not to spoil any of the details, but it’s important to keep doing the things that inspire you, no matter what kind of hand life deals you. See Broken Robots in their album release show at LiveWire on 9/12, and be sure to stream/buy/consume “The Great American Struggle” upon its release.
