An interview with Bret McCormick
Part One of an Interview with Bret McCormick.. Watch for part two. Pharaoh's Dream by Bret McCormick Bret McCormick is an author, artist and filmmaker who lives in Bedford, Texas. He is the co-creator of the long-running horror anthology, Road Kill: Texas Horror by Texas Writers (now in its ninth year). Bret has been a key player in the production of over twenty feature films. His micro budget movies The Abomination and Repligator have recently been re-released on Blu-ray and are enjoying a resurgence among film fans. Bret sells his paintings at pop-up events, galleries and shops around Texas. From an early age Bret McCormick has had a fascination with Egypt and ancient art. The Pharaoh's Dream is an attempt to express the diverse and sometimes whimsical or dreamlike turns life takes. McCormick explains, "When I was twenty years old, I dreamed that I was a mummified king buried deep within the earth, an entity of a different order, like the Titans of mythology. In my dream, I woke up in my tomb and realized the entire history of planet Earth was nothing more than the dreams I'd been having as I lay dormant for eons. With a smile I closed my eyes and went back to sleep. That dream has always stayed with me. I believe life/reality is very much like a dream. Someone or something is dreaming us. My art is informed by that idea." "My preference is to paint on boards that I have assembled and textured using spackling. But my drive to paint is such that I often just use whatever materials are at hand. I frequently use discarded canvasses I find on curbs, at garage sales or thrift stores. The shadow boxes I create are made from discarded drawers I've found on curbs. I like the depth they give, the 3-D quality." Galveston ArtWalk is hosted by the Galveston Art Center and is presented every 6-8 weeks in partnership with downtown galleries, artist studios, nonprofits, and local businesses, ArtWalk takes place inside existing art spaces. This popular event is free and open to everyone.
